Performance Portability Strategies for Grid C++ Expression Templates
One of the key requirements for the Lattice QCD Application Development as
part of the US Exascale Computing Project is performance portability across
multiple architectures. Using the Grid C++ expression template as a starting
point, we report on the progress made with regards to the Grid GPU offloading
strategies. We present both the successes and issues encountered in using CUDA,
OpenACC and Just-In-Time compilation. Experimentation and performance on GPUs
with a SU(3)SU(3) streaming test will be reported. We will also report
on the challenges of using current OpenMP 4.x for GPU offloading in the same

Pacific sea surface temperature associations with southwestern United States summer rainfall and atmospheric circulation
Pacific sea surface temperatures (SSTs) are examined for their associations with (1) summer rainfall, and (2) the latitude location of the mid-tropospheric subtropical high pressure ridge (STR) in the southwestern United States during 1945 to 1986. Extreme northward (southward) displacements of STR are associated with wet (dry) summers over Arizona and an enhanced (weakened) gradient of SST off the California and Baja coasts. These tend to follow winters marked by positive (negative) phases of the PNA, Pacific/North America, teleconnection pattern. Recent decadal variations of Arizona summer rainfall (1950s wet; 1970s dry) appear similarly related to southwestern United States synoptic circulation and eastern Pacific SSTs
School Bond Success: An Exploratory Case Study
Following two-failed school bond issues in 1995 and 1998, one mid-sized rural school district organized an effort that led to two successful school bond elections in 2001 and 2003. The school district’s strategic plan mirrored many of the recommendations for successful bond referendums published in School Bond Success: A Strategy for Building America’s Schools. Findings from this case study, utilizing a Rapid Assessment Process, illustrate many of the reasons why the school district passed two consecutive bond issues with unprecedented community support. Although the findings from this school district may not match the concerns of all communities, it provides readers with a perspective of voters’ beliefs in one rural school district
Spatial Resolution of a Micromegas-TPC Using the Charge Dispersion Signal
The Time Projection Chamber (TPC) for the International Linear Collider will
need to measure about 200 track points with a resolution close to 100 m. A
Micro Pattern Gas Detector (MPGD) readout TPC could achieve the desired
resolution with existing techniques using sub-millimeter width pads at the
expense of a large increase in the detector cost and complexity. We have
recently applied a new MPGD readout concept of charge dispersion to a prototype
GEM-TPC and demonstrated the feasibility of achieving good resolution with pads
similar in width to the ones used for the proportional wire TPC. The charge
dispersion studies were repeated with a Micromegas TPC amplification stage. We
present here our first results on the Micromegas-TPC resolution with charge
dispersion. The TPC resolution with the Micromegas readout is compared to our
earlier GEM results and to the resolution expected from electron statistics and

Exotic hybrid mesons with light quarks
Hybrid mesons, made from a quark, an antiquark and gluons, can have quantum
numbers inaccessible to conventional quark-antiquark states. Confirmation of
such states would give information on the role of "dynamical" color in low
energy QCD. We present preliminary results for hybrid meson masses using light

Finite Temperature Lattice QCD with Clover Fermions
We report on our simulation of finite temperature lattice QCD with two
flavors of Symanzik-improved fermions and
Symanzik-improved glue. Our thermodynamic simulations were performed on an lattice, and we have performed complementary zero temperature
simulations on an lattice. We compare our results to those from
simulations with two flavors of Wilson fermions and discuss the improvement

Update on the hadron spectrum with two flavors of staggered quarks
We present an update on the MILC Collaboration's light hadron spectrum
calculation with two flavors of dynamical, staggered quarks. We present
extrapolations of the nucleon to rho mass ratio to the continuum limit for

Characteristics of lesser prairie-chicken (Tympanuchus pallidicinctus) long-distance movements across their distribution

Ecosphere, 7(8). doi:10.1002/(ISSN)2150-8925Long-distance movements are important adaptive behaviors that contribute to population, community, and ecosystem connectivity. However, researchers have a poor understanding of the characteristics of long-distance movements for most species. Here, we examined long-distance movements for the lesser prairie-chicken (Tympanuchus pallidicinctus), a species of conservation concern. We addressed the following questions: (1) At what distances could populations be connected? (2) What are the characteristics and probability of dispersal movements? (3) Do lesser prairie-chickens display exploratory and round-trip movements? (4) Do the characteristics of long-distance movements vary by site? Movements were examined from populations using satellite GPS transmitters across the entire distribution of the species in New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Colorado. Dispersal movements were recorded up to 71 km net displacement, much farther than hitherto recorded. These distances suggest that there may be greater potential connectivity among populations than previously thought. Dispersal movements were displayed primarily by females and had a northerly directional bias. Dispersal probabilities ranged from 0.08 to 0.43 movements per year for both sexes combined, although these movements averaged only 16 km net displacement. Lesser prairie-chickens displayed both exploratory foray loops and round-trip movements. Half of round-trip movements appeared seasonal, suggesting a partial migration in some populations. None of the long-distance movements varied by study site. Data presented here will be important in parameterizing models assessing population viability and informing conservation planning, although further work is needed to identify landscape features that may reduce connectivity among populations. © 2016 Earl et al
