BIOPHYSICAL SIMULATION IN SUPPORT OF CROP PRODUCTION DECISIONS: A CASE STUDY IN THE BLACKLANDS REGION OF TEXAS
Economic feasibility of Texas Blacklands corn production in relation to sorghum, wheat, and cotton is studied. Biophysical simulation generated yield data are integrated with an economic decision model using quadratic programming. Given the various scenarios analyzed, corn is economically feasible for the Blacklands. A crop mix of half corn and half cotton production is selected under risk neutrality with wheat entering if risk aversion is present. Corn and grain sorghum production are highly substitutable. Profit effects attributed to changing corn planting dates are more pronounced than profit changes resulting from altering corn population or maturity class.Crop Production/Industries,
An Estimation of the Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglow Apparent Optical Brightness Distribution Function
By using recent publicly available observational data obtained in conjunction
with the NASA Swift gamma-ray burst mission and a novel data analysis
technique, we have been able to make some rough estimates of the GRB afterglow
apparent optical brightness distribution function. The results suggest that 71%
of all burst afterglows have optical magnitudes with mR < 22.1 at 1000 seconds
after the burst onset, the dimmest detected object in the data sample. There is
a strong indication that the apparent optical magnitude distribution function
peaks at mR ~ 19.5. Such estimates may prove useful in guiding future plans to
improve GRB counterpart observation programs. The employed numerical techniques
might find application in a variety of other data analysis problems in which

Insect discounts given at country elevators and at terminal elevators were analyzed to determine impacts of the new standards. HST Imaging of the Globular Clusters in the Fornax Cluster: NGC 1399 and NGC 1404
The Fornax cluster galaxies NGC 1399 and NGC 1404 are ideal for studying the
effects of a cluster environment on globular cluster systems. Here we present
new optical imaging of these two galaxies from both the Hubble Space
Telescope's Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 and the Cerro Tololo
Inter-American Observatory's 1.5m telescope. The combination of both data sets
provides unique insight on the spatial and colour distribution of globular
clusters. From B-I colours, we find that both galaxies have a broad globular
cluster metallicity distribution that is inconsistent with a single population.
Two Gaussians provide a reasonable representation of the metallicity
distribution in each galaxy. The metal-rich subpopulation is more centrally
concentrated than the metal-poor one. We show that the radial metallicity
gradient can be explained by the changing relative mix of the two globular
cluster subpopulations. We derive globular cluster surface density profiles,
and find that they are flatter (i.e. more extended) than the underlying
starlight. The total number of globular clusters and specific frequency are
calculated to be N = 5700 +/- 500, S_N = 11.5 +/- 1.0 for NGC 1399 and N = 725
+/- 145, S_N = 2.0 +/- 0.5 for NGC 1404. Our results are compared to the

It will describe the history of products liability nationally and in Montana and will analyze major issues by examining current directions in case law. Finally, it will offer a framework for legal analysis of products liability to assist courts and counsel in avoiding some of the pitfalls encountered in development of products liability in other jurisdictions
Pseudo-fermionization of 1-D bosons in optical lattices
We present a model that generalizes the Bose-Fermi mapping for strongly
correlated 1D bosons in an optical lattice, to cases in which the average
number of atoms per site is larger than one. This model gives an accurate
account of equilibrium properties of such systems, in parameter regimes
relevant to current experiments. The application of this model to
non-equilibrium phenomena is explored by a study of the dynamics of an atom
cloud subject to a sudden displacement of the confining potential. Good
agreement is found with results of recent experiments. The simplicity and
intuitive appeal of this model make it attractive as a general tool for
understanding bosonic systems in the strongly correlated regime.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
