Corporate Social Responsibility Disclosure and Financial Performance: The Mediating Role of Financial Statement Comparability

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosure and financial performance with the consideration of the mediating role of financial statement comparability (FSC) for a sample of Vietnamese listed firms. We used content analysis of the information related to the GRI Standards on annual reports in order to construct CSR disclosure score. We used a dataset of 1125 firm-year observations, covering 225 firms listed on Vietnam’s stock market in the period 2014–2018. Applying OLS and GMM estimation methods, Sobel test, and using different proxies of the mediator variable to increase the robustness, we obtained two remarkable conclusions. First, CSR disclosure has a positive impact on the financial performance of listed companies in Vietnam. Second, there is a complementary mediation effect of financial statement comparability in the above relationship. Our results suggest that it is necessary to develop a legal framework for the practice and disclosure of CSR as well as to apply the international accounting standards in the Vietnamese stock market

Corporate Social Responsibility Disclosure and Its Effect on Firm Risk: An Empirical Research on Vietnamese Firms

The purpose of the study was to gather empirical evidence on the influence of corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosure on firm risk of Vietnam’s publicly listed companies. We used adjusted OLS estimation and regression analysis with adjusted panel data for heteroskedasticity and/or autocorrelation to analyze the correlation using data from 225 listed companies on Vietnam’s stock market from 2014 to 2019. The study’s sample period is relatively recent in the emerging market, especially considering regulatory differences and the availability of voluntary disclosure requirements. The findings of research on the relationship between CSR and corporate risk are mixed, particularly in developing markets. Research findings reveal a negative and significant association between CSR and firm risk, implying that stronger CSR performance lowers a company’s risk. This aims to strengthen a research perspective of this connection in emerging countries. Following that, we discuss some policy implications for listed firms and regulators in CSR disclosure

The impact of short-term debt on accruals-based earnings management: Evidence from Vietnam

This study seeks to examine the relationship between short-term debt maturity and accruals-based earnings management using a sample of listed firms in Vietnam from 2010-2017. The extant literature remains under-explored on the impact of short-term debt on accruals-based earnings management at low and high levels of short-term debt. We further dissect the impact of the interaction between the growth opportunities and short debt maturity on accruals-based earnings management. Our findings provide evidence suggesting that short-term debt maturity is likely to exert a desirable impact in lowering earnings management at low levels of short-term debt, while at high levels it tends to increase earnings manipulation, demonstrating a U-shaped relationship. Furthermore, we show that growth opportunities moderate the impact of short debt maturity on earnings management. Specifically, the U-shaped pattern between short-term debt and earnings management is pronounced for firms with low growth opportunities, while for high-growth counterparts that pattern weakens

From Corporate Social Responsibility to Stock Price Crash Risk: Modelling the Mediating Role of Firm Performance in an Emerging Market

The literature on the link between corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosure and stock price crash risk suggests that it is far more complicated than a plain one-to-one relationship. In this study, we examine how CSR disclosure affects the stock price crash risk and whether firm performance acts as a mediating variable in this relationship. The CSR disclosure index is built using the content analysis technique and the GRI criteria. We choose 225 businesses in Vietnam, comprising 159 firms listed on HOSE and 66 firms listed on HNX. Using the techniques of OLS, LOGIT, GMM, and the Sobel test and replacing different measures of dependent and mediator variable to enhance the robustness of our findings, we reach two important results. To begin with, CSR disclosure has a negative influence on the stock price crash risk of Vietnam’s listed firms. Second, in the aforementioned relationship, firm performance serves as an intermediate. Our results imply that listed firms should engage in CSR practices and disclosure in order to raise the firm’s performance and lower the stock price crash risk

Is short term debt maturity linked to real earning management?

This paper explores the association between the maturity of short term debt and real earnings management in the context of an emerging market. We use a panel dataset of listed firms in Vietnam over the period from 2009 to 2017 and employ conventional methods for panel data analysis. Our work contributes by documenting a non-linear relationship between short-term debt maturity and manipulation of earnings. In particular, businesses prefer to refrain from manipulating earnings at low short-term debt maturity levels but are likely to manage them at higher short-term debt maturity levels. Under a battery of robustness evaluations, this result remains unchanged. This means that investors/lenders of firms should be vigilant with the information recorded on financial statements because managers can manage corporate earnings, especially at high short-term debt levels

Factors Affecting the Intention to Use Financial Technology among Vietnamese Youth: Research in the Time of COVID-19 and Beyond

This study focuses on understanding the factors that affect the intention of using financial technology among young Vietnamese in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Fintech studies are abundant in developed countries and mainly focus on consumers’ conditions, awareness, habits, and capital. These are expected to differ significantly from the situation in developing countries. We have reviewed factors that can affect the user’s intention, including the Perceived Benefit (PB), Perceived Risk (PR), Belief (B), and Social Influence (SI), and rely on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) model in this research. The survey sample comprises 161 Z-generation consumers with strong flexibility and knowledge about the use of Fintech. We use the PLS-SEM (partial least squares structural equation modeling) analysis method with the SmartPLS software (SmartPLS GmbH, Oststeinbek, Germany) to evaluate the research model. We find that the Perceived Benefit (PB) has the most significant impact on the intention to use Fintech, followed by Belief (B). However, in general, the factors are not significant, perhaps due to many reasons that are intrinsic in Vietnam. Based on this result, service providers, policymakers, and researchers can calibrate the development and research for the following stages. We offer findings different from the previous research, thus especially extending the literature on young people

The Impact of Corporate Social Responsibility Disclosure and Accounting Comparability on Earnings Persistence

The study aims to provide empirical evidence on the impact of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and accounting comparability (AC) on earnings persistence (EP) in listed firms on the Vietnamese stock market. Data were collected from 76 companies that have disclosure financial statements, annual reports, and CSR of companies and listed firms on the Vietnamese stock market in the period from 2014 to 2017. The study used the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) regression method to evaluate the correlation. We believe that CSR and AC have a positive impact on EP. The study helps to contribute to a review of previous studies on the relationship between CSR disclosure, AC and EP in developing countries. The study points out some policy implications for regulators and firms on transparency in an information disclosure to increase AC and CSR on the basis of maintaining EP

Earnings Management, Board Composition and Earnings Persistence in Emerging Market

Income data are useful for making economic decisions and anticipating future revenues. Earning quality, or the utility of earnings in making decisions, is determined by real economic performance. Firms with greater performance should, on average, have higher profits quality. Managers, investors, and scholars are interested in the influence of earnings management (EM) on earnings persistence (EP). This study evaluates the relationship between these variables in terms of accrual, real EM, board composition, and EP. We conducted quantitative research using GMM regression on a sample of 228 listed businesses in the Vietnamese stock market from 2014 to 2017. Our findings indicate that accrual earnings management (AEM) is associated with a negative connection with EP, but real earnings management (REM) is associated with a mixed association with EP. Additionally, the data indicate that board of directors (BODs) play a critical role in EP. Our research contributes to the existing body of knowledge by establishing a foundation for future research in this subject and by proposing some feasible options for functional government agencies and enterprise management interested in enhancing EP
