OzGateway is a cooperative database system designed for integrating heterogeneous existing information systems into an interoperable environment. It also aims to provide a gatewway for legacy information system migration. This paper summarises the problems and results of multidatabase transaction management research. In supporting global updates in OzGateway in an evolutionary way, we introduce a classification of multidatabase transactions and discuss the problems in each category. The architecture of OzGateway and the design of the global transaction manager and servers are presented

Chinese journals’ chief editors should enhance their response rate to authors

College of Geography and Environmental Science, Northwest Normal University, Lanzhou 730070, ChinaChief editors are the souls of journals, and can guarantee a journal’s success by enhancing the efficiency of the manuscript submission and publication process through promptness and speedy response rates to authors. In this study, a total of 867 international journals—indexed by Science Citation Index, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index, and 567 Chinese journals—indexed by Chinese Science Citation Database and Chinese Social Science Citation Information database, were randomly selected to explore whether significant differences in the response rate and speed exist between chief editors. 639 chief editor email addresses were obtained for the international journals, whereas 357 email addresses were gathered for the Chinese journals. However, due to mail servers, only 274 international and 330 Chinese editors were successfully contacted. All messages contained a questionnaire geared to determine the total length of time required for the manuscript submission and publication process. After two months, a 100% response rate was achieved for international chief editors, while Chinese chief editors had a significantly lower rate (p < 0.01) of 30.6%. Nevertheless, for both international and Chinese chief editors, 66% and 58% provided a response within 12 hours, respectively. Although several reasons exist for the Chinese journals’ lagging behind international journals, this study demonstrates that the response rate of chief editors to authors may also be a contributing factor. Thus, chief editors of Chinese journals should enhance their response rate to improve the current situation and further contribute to Chinese journals’ success

Patchouli alcohol (PA), a tricyclic sesquiterpene, is one of the critical bioactive ingredients and is mainly isolated from aerial part of Pogostemon cablin (known as guanghuoxiang in China) belonging to Labiatae. So far, PA has been widely applied in perfume industries. This review was written with the use of reliable information published between 1974 and 2016 from libraries and electronic researches including NCKI, PubMed, Reaxys, ACS, ScienceDirect, Springer, and Wiley-Blackwell, aiming at presenting comprehensive outline of security, pharmacokinetics, and bioactivities of PA and at further providing a potential guide in exploring the PA and its use in various medical fields. We found that PA maybe was a low toxic drug that was acquired numerously through vegetable oil isolation and chemical synthesis and its stability and low water dissolution were improved in pharmaceutics. It also possessed specific pharmacokinetic characteristics, such as two-compartment open model, first-order kinetic elimination, and certain biometabolism and biotransformation process, and was shown to have multiple biological activities, that is, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, antitumor, antimicrobial, insecticidal, antiatherogenic, antiemetic, whitening, and sedative activity. However, the systematic evaluations of preparation, pharmaceutics, toxicology, pharmacokinetics, and bioactivities underlying molecular mechanisms of action also required further investigation prior to practices of PA in clinic

HAdV-2-suppressed growth of SV40 T antigen-transformed mouse mammary epithelial cell-induced tumours in SCID mice

AbstractHuman adenovirus (HAdV) vectors are promising tools for cancer therapy, but the shortage of efficient animal models for productive HAdV infections has restricted the evaluation of systemic effects to mainly immunodeficient mice. Previously, we reported a highly efficient replication of HAdV-2 in a non-tumorigenic mouse mammary epithelial cell line, NMuMG. Here we show that HAdV-2 gene expression and progeny formation in NMuMG cells transformed with the SV40 T antigen (NMuMG-T cells) were as efficient as in the parental NMuMG cells. Injection of HAdV-2 into tumours established by NMuMG-T in SCID mice caused reduced tumour growth and signs of intratumoural lesions. HAdV-2 replicated within the NMuMG-T-established tumours, but not in interspersed host-derived tissues within the tumours. The specific infection of NMuMG-T-derived tumours was verified by the lack of viral DNA in kidney, lung or spleen although low levels of viral DNA was occasionally found in liver
