Beyond scarcity and its management : Sociocultural dimensions of the water crisis in the Atacama Desert

Unidad de excelencia María de Maeztu CEX2019-000940-MThe depletion of freshwater sources by indiscriminate industrial actions is one of the direct causes of the current water crisis. One of the emblematic cases of this problem is the Atacama Desert, a unique hyper-arid zone in which an extensive copper industry depletes its scarce freshwater reserves. This territory, occupied for millennia by indigenous groups, is experiencing a water crisis that threatens its very subsistence. This paper uses the ethnographic method and the Water Justice framework to approach the everyday and often invisible issues of this crisis within the Mamiña community. This Quechua community holds an ambivalent position in front of the copper mine project because of its control of the water rights, the economic interests of some of their members, and the role of the Aymara minority. We suggest that researchers in this field pay more attention to the communities' internal diversity and its relations with the copper industry to understand how the water crisis is detached from its biophysical conceptions to be socioculturally constructed

Desde lo fundamental a lo orientado : 20 años del Grupo de Investigación en Antropología Fundamental y Orientada (GRAFO)

Hace algunos años, mientras cursaba el grado en Antropología Social en una universidad del norte de Chile, nos encomendaron la lectura de un artículo que reflexionaba sobre las implicaciones del trabajo antropológico en las relaciones humanas de los grupos de estudio. Allí su autora, Teresa San Román, repasaba la importancia del compromiso fundamental del trabajo de campo in situ en el que el investigador pudiese aproximarse a las cuestiones cotidianas y a menudo invisibles de la cultura. Dado que este conocimiento -reflexionaba la autora- podría eventualmente afectar a los propios grupos de estudio, era necesario orientar el conocimiento adquirido a la mejora de su situación. Una impronta que Teresa, ahora no solo a través de sus reflexiones impresas sino esta vez sentada a mi lado, comienza a rememorar junto a Aurelio Díaz y Aurora González, los tres fundadores del Grup de Recerca en Antropologia Fonamental i Orientada (GRAFO), un SGR consolidado y reconocido por la AQU. Algunas de estas conversaciones tuvieron lugar en la celebración del vigésimo aniversario del GRAFO en algunos rincones de la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la UAB. En estas conversaciones se basan muchas de las ideas que expongo en esta reseña de homenaje.Some years ago, while I was studying for a degree in Social Anthropology at a university in northern Chile, we were entrusted with the reading of an article that reflected on the implications of anthropological work in the human relationships of study groups. Her author, Teresa San Román, reviewed the importance of the fundamental commitment of field work in situ in which the researcher could approach the everyday and often invisible issues of culture. Since this knowledge (the author reflected) could eventually affect the study groups themselves, it was necessary to guide the knowledge acquired to improve their situation. An influence that Teresa, not only through her printed reflections but this time sitting next to me, begins to remember with Aurelio Díaz and Aurora González, the three founders of the Research Group in Fonamental and Oriented Anthropology (GRAFO), a SGR consolidated and recognized by the AQU. Some of these conversations took place in the celebration of the twentieth anniversary of GRAFO in some corners of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the UAB. Many of the ideas that I present in this tribute are based in these conversations

Populismo. Historia y geografía de un concepto

En su libro Populismo. Historia y geografía de un concepto, la doctora en teoría política Guadalupe Salmorán Villar prosigue sus investigaciones en materia de política, populismo y democracia. En dicho trabajo, la autora reconstruye los momentos y coordenadas de este concepto, muy utilizado en la bibliografía internacional y en la opinión pública mundial, a pesar de la ambigüedad teórica del término. Salmorán describe los diversos usos y definiciones del término ―sin consenso entre los estudiosos, por cierto― a través de una introducción que da un breve acercamiento al libro, seis capítulos que revisan la trayectoria de distintas aristas del populismo y un epílogo que sintetiza los rasgos más importantes..

La parte y el todo. Estudios sobre la visión en dos cuadros de Jan Vermeer

En base al análisis en conjunto de dos pinturas de Jan Vermeer, examinando sus elementos compositivos y los objetos que representan, junto con la utilización de bibliografía académica sobre el pintor y el arte holandés del siglo XVII, se propone un estudio sobre los problemas que estos cuadros plantean al observador y las relaciones que pueden establecerse entre este, el pintor, y la imagen, entre las partes y el todo. Nuestra propuesta es que Vermeer muestra que la pintura construida en base a la perspectiva es tan ilusionista y manipulada como la visión del mundo que tenemos en los mapas, cartas y globos, todos representados en los cuadros analizados, donde el pintor parece ser uno de los primeros en darse cuenta que estos son una distorsión del mundo y no su representación, Esta autoconciencia del propio quehacer que encontramos en Vermeer produce que el tema de estos dos cuadros, analizados en conjunto, sea nuestra propia visión y sus problemas cuando se enfrenta a distintos dispositivos visuales

Self-constructing Recognizer P Systems

Usually, the changes produced in the membrane structure of a P system are considered side effects. The output of the computation is encoded as a multiset placed in a specific region and the membrane structure in the halting configuration is not considered important. In this paper we explore P systems where the target of the computation is the construction of a new membrane structure according its set of rules. The new membrane structure can be considered as the initial one of a new self-constructed P system. We focus on the self-construction of recognizer P systems and illustrates the definition with a study of the self-construction P systems working as decision trees for solving Machine Learning decision problems.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TIN2012-3743

Skeletonizing Images by Using Spiking Neural P Systems

Skeletonizing an image is representing a shape with a small amount of information by converting the initial image into a more compact representation and keeping the meaning features. In this paper we use spiking neural P systems to solve this problem. Based on such devices, a parallel software has been implemented on the GPU architecture. A parallel algorithm for skeletonizing images by using spiking neural P systems

Skeletonization is a common type of transformation within image analysis. In general, the image B is a skeleton of the black and white image A, if the image B is made of fewer black pixels than the image A, it does preserve its topological properties and, in some sense, keeps its meaning. In this paper, we aim to use spiking neural P systems (a computational model in the framework of membrane computing) to solve the skeletonization problem. Based on such devices, a parallel software has been implemented within the Graphics Processors Units (GPU) architecture.
