JUAN LARREA: LA UTOPIA MELANCOLICA
This essay studies Larreaʼs proposal of an American utopia as the final synthesis of the opposites that surrealism had anticipated and the Spanish Republic had announced. Such a utopia, a compensation for the historical failure of the Spanish Republic, cannot hide its character as a melancholy response to loss.

Gender(ed) Matters in Communication/Media Studies : Integrating Curricular Innovation and Social Change in the Spanish Model
This article investigates the benefits of making gender-related issues more central to the Communication Studies curriculum in the Spanish system of higher education. The shift to "valueimpact criteria" as the standard of success of today's curricula in Europe is one of the strongest critiques that higher education is facing in that context. This article focuses on the state of affairs in Spain, showcases why Communication Studies is a particularly relevant field for these changes, outlines how a multi-platform approach to learning (combination of teaching, research, and social activism) pays special attention to the ways gender, racial, ethnic, and economic parameters interface with each other, and details the value of introducing more interdisciplinary and gender-based cognitive paradigms into the curriculum for making our campuses sites of innovation, better learning, and forces for social change.
Visco-hyperelastic model with damage for simulating cyclic thermoplastic elastomers behavior applied to an industrial component
In this work a nonlinear phenomenological visco-hyperelastic model including damage consideration is developed to simulate the behavior of Santoprene 101-73 material. This type of elastomeric material is widely used in the automotive and aeronautic sectors, as it has multiple advantages. However, there are still challenges in properly analyzing the mechanical phenomena that these materials exhibit. To simulate this kind of material a lot of theories have been exposed, but none of them have been endorsed unanimously. In this paper, a new model is presented based on the literature, and on experimental data. The test samples were extracted from an air intake duct component of an automotive engine. Inelastic phenomena such as hyperelasticity, viscoelasticity and damage are considered singularly in this model, thus modifying and improving some relevant models found in the literature. Optimization algorithms were used to find out the model parameter values that lead to the best fit of the experimental curves from the tests. An adequate fitting was obtained for the experimental results of a cyclic uniaxial loading of Santoprene 101-73
Choosing the type of income-contingent loan: risk-sharing versus risk-pooling
This paper analyses the choice between risk-sharing and risk-pooling income-contingent loans for higher education of risk-averse individuals who differ in their ability to benefit from education and inherited wealth. The paper identifies the possible outcomes of a majority vote between the two income-contingent schemes and provides several examples where the risk-pooling income contingent loan is preferred. The paper then discusses the implications on participation and voting outcomes if successful graduates are mobile and provides examples where the riskpooling incomecontingent loan remains being preferred. Risk-pooling schemes can however be prone to adverse selection problems, particularly if students are mobile. The paper explores the implications of allowing students to opt out of the riskpooling income-contingent loan for a pure loan. It shows that risk-pooling income-contingent loans can be sustained even when some students opt out
In this article we outline the project Learning Outside the Classroom that combines culture and language, two of the most important pillars on education. Following Vygotski´ s theories, our project presents a clear constructivist line linking the teaching of culture, through the use of cultural heritage, with the teaching of the English language as an additional language. In this article we relate the heritage education and its objectives to the project mentioned above and highlight the similarities found between them. The project combines the use of formal school spaces with some non-formal spaces in which learning can be produced. Among the non-formal spaces, we have focused on urban spaces such as: museums, art galleries, parks and city streets. We should not forget the possibilities that natural spaces in the rural areas have since any ecosystem can be used as a learning environment: beaches, mountains, forests, rivers, etc. In any case, the heritage plays a double role in the learning process, either as a resource or as a context. The project has been developing in Oviedo since the school year 2011-2012 when it started at the Teacher Training and Education Faculty of the University of Oviedo and almost at the same time, in two schools. In 2016, the final project was validated by experts on the matter
This article investigates the benefits of making gender-related issues more central to the Communication Studies curriculum in the Spanish system of higher education. Mencion de Calidad: Reducing Inefficiency in Higher Education Markets when There Are Networks Externalities
This paper studies the decentralized choice of universities facing the decision to launch a new program at the graduate level (a master or a doctoral program) when students' enrollment decisions are affected by network effects. Possible inefficiencies associated to the existence of network externalities on student utility are first identified. University competition can eliminate some, although not all, of these inefficiencies. Under these circumstances, a hallmark certifying the high quality of a program (known in Spain as Mencion de Calidad) o may prove useful to select the most efficient equilibrium
