OB Stars in the Solar Neighborhood I: Analysis of their Spatial Distribution

    Get PDF
We present a newly-developed, three-dimensional spatial classification method, designed to analyze the spatial distribution of early type stars within the 1 kpc sphere around the Sun. We propose a distribution model formed by two intersecting disks -the Gould Belt (GB) and the Local Galactic Disk (LGD)- defined by their fundamental geometric parameters. Then, using a sample of about 550 stars of spectral types earlier than B6 and luminosity classes between III and V, with precise photometric distances of less than 1 kpc, we estimate for some spectral groups the parameters of our model, as well as single membership probabilities of GB and LGD stars, thus drawing a picture of the spatial distribution of young stars in the vicinity of the Sun.Comment: 28 pages including 9 Postscript figures, one of them in color. Trypanosoma brucei gambiense in domestic livestock of Kogo and Mbini foci (Equatorial Guinea).

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate Trypanosoma brucei gambiense infection in peri-domestic livestock from Kogo and Mbini foci (Equatorial Guinea) in order to investigate its possible implication in the sleeping sickness transmission cycle in these hypoendemic foci. METHODS: Samples from 698 domestic animals (goats, sheep and pigs) from trypanosomiasis-endemic localities of Kogo and Mbini foci were tested for animal trypanosomes and T. b. gambiense (group I) by species-specific polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: Trypanosoma brucei s.l., the predominant trypanosome species, was detected in 182 (52.6%) samples from Mbini and in 127 (36.1%) samples from Kogo. T. b. gambiense was only identified in seven (2%) of the Mbini samples and one co-infection (with T. vivax) was observed. CONCLUSION: The occurrence of T. b. gambiense in peri-domestic livestock in Mbini and its absence in Kogo could explain the epidemiological differences between the two foci and could have significant implications for sleeping sickness control in Equatorial Guinea

Proxy reporting of health-related quality of life for people with dementia: a psychometric solution.

BACKGROUND: The growing move towards personalised health and social care systems means that every effort needs to be made to generate patient-reported outcome data. However, the deteriorating nature of dementia can make it difficult for people with dementia to complete self-reported questionnaires and it is often necessary to rely on a family member (proxy) to report on their behalf. There is little evidence to guide how the difference between self- and proxy-reports of health reported quality of life (HRQL) in dementia can be interpreted. METHODS: We recruited people with dementia and their family carers from 78 memory Assessment Services in the UK. We used Rasch measurement methods to investigate whether a HRQL questionnaire known as DEMQOL (self-reported by the person with dementia) and DEMQOL-Proxy (proxy-reported by a family carer) can be placed on the same continuum and whether a revised scoring algorithm, based on this equated model, can be developed that takes account of the relationship between self- and proxy-reports. RESULTS: In a sample of 1434 patients and 1030 carers, our findings supported equating DEMQOL/DEMQOL-Proxy (overall fit to the model; no mis-fitting items) after addressing specific issues (eight disordered items requiring re-scoring, four pairs locally dependent items, and five items showing DIF). Cross walk tables have been produced. CONCLUSIONS: We have established for the first time that DEMQOL and DEMQOL-Proxy can be placed on the same continuum and that patients and carer proxies are reporting on the same construct when they complete these questionnaires. Where possible both DEMQOL and DEMQOL-Proxy should still be administered together, using the improved scoring algorithm reported here. Where only DEMQOL-Proxy is available, the cross walk tables provide an estimate of DEMQOL for a particular person from their DEMQOL-Proxy score

Relation Between TDEC, Extinction Ratio and Chromatic Dispersion in 50G PON

We evaluate TDEC in a 50G-PON downstream through experiments and show the relation with receiver sensitivity at different fiber lengths and ER. The results show that TDEC effectively follows the penalty induced by transmission impairments

On parity-odd sector in metric-affine theories

We undertake the construction of quadratic parity-violating terms involving the curvature in the four-dimensional metric-affine gravity. We demonstrate that there are only 12 linearly independent scalars, plus an additional one that can be removed by using the Pontryagin invariant. Several convenient bases for this sector are provided in both components and differential form notation. We also particularize our general findings to some constrained geometries like Weyl-Cartan and metric-compatible connections.Comment: 12 pages, no figures, no table
