EDV – Italian Medieval Epigraphy in the Vernacular. Some Editorial Problems Discussed,

EDV (Epigraphic Database Vernacular) is a database collecting the vernacular inscriptions produced in Italy from the late Medieval to the Early Modern Age, and is a part of the EAGLE and IDEA projects. The present contribution illustrates the criteria used for the description and indexing of all inscriptions that record public script in language(s) other than Latin. The material is very varied as regards language, script, provenance, support and function. The author discusses briefly the editorial criteria that may prove most appropriate for its publication

The article discusses the complex issues involved in accounting for the birth and historical development of modern languages in Europe, and of their varieties and perceived identities. It offers a review of relevant approaches to this field of language studies and discusses the crucial role played by historical sociolinguistics, in particular when combined with studies in the history of written culture. The author argues in favour of a research approach aimed at reconstructing the ‘linguistic culture’ of communities in time and space, rather than focusing on the history of individual languages. In conclusion, the author illustrates EUROTALES. A Museum Laboratory of the Voices of Europe, a collaborative project aimed at the representation of languages as a dynamic and shared heritage

TranScript è una rivista internazionale che si propone di essere un luogo di discussione sul tema della traduzione, con particolare attenzione ai secoli fra l’XI e il XV. Accogliamo con favore contributi sulla ‘traduzione’ dall’oralità alla scrittura, fra diverse tradizioni culturali, dal latino ai volgari e alle lingue moderne. TranScript is an international journal providing a forum for discussion on the theme of translation, with a special focus on the centuries spanning from the 11th to the 15th. We welcome contributions on the translation of cultures from orality to script, on the ‘translation’ among different cultural traditions, from Latin into vernaculars, and across modern languages
