A call for solidarity: Community support for the Tollcross Community Action Network amidst the Covid-19 Outbreak

In late 2019 and early 2020 the coronavirus Covid-19 spread rapidly throughout the world, resulting in national lockdowns and extreme anxiety as supermarket stock became sparse and health services were pushed beyond capacity. Amidst the panic buying on the ground and failures to react appropriately at the UK Government level, a wealth of community-run initiatives rapidly developed throughout Scotland, the U.K., and beyond. Newly motivated and seasoned community organisers quickly established Facebook Groups and appropriately-named Twitter hashtags that sought to identify those with the means, health, capacity, and time to help others suddenly faced with unemployment, homelessness, and either self-imposed or healthcare sector recommended isolation and quarantining. During this time, an organisation for whom I am the sole paid and part-time employee, the Tollcross Community Action Network (TCAN), has sought to sustain our weekly Community Hub (operated in partnership with the Tollcross Foodbank) for as long as possible, continuing our frontline support for those living in social or economic isolation, experiencing food poverty, or in need of assistance in understanding medical correspondence or bills. This article briefly describes the struggles, support, and lessons we learnt during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic

Mas ela tamb&eacute;m se surpreendeu ao ver que esses equipamentos nunca eram utilizados.</span><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:LatentStyles DefLockedState="false" DefUnhideWhenUsed="true" Validity of a contact mat and accelerometric system to assess countermovement jump from flight time

    Get PDF
Countermovement jump (CMJ) height is an important parameter in physical performance. This study compared CMJ height measured using ChronoJump contact mat (CJ) and Myotest accelerometer (MT) systems with a force platform (FP). Thirty recreationally active adults (32.1 ± 10.4 years, 75.9 ± 12.0 kg, 173.2 ± 6.3 cm) completed a CMJ protocol where height was simultaneously recorded using the three systems. CJ and MT measures were strongly and significant correlated (r = 0.65, 0.66, respectively; p  0.05), yet MT-derived measures were significantly different from those obtained using the FP (p < 0.05). Systematic bias was observed between FP and the CJ and between FP and MT. This study demonstrates the validity of CJ and MT systems for the assessment of CMJ height. Systematic bias and between-device differences in measurement should be considered when interpreting and comparing data from these devices

Efficient Follow-Up of Exoplanet Transits Using Small Telescopes

    Get PDF
11 pages, 5 figures, to be published in PASP, comments welcomeHere, we introduce an online tool for the prediction of exoplanet transit light curves. Small telescopes can readily capture exoplanet transits under good weather conditions when the combination of a bright star and a large transiting exoplanet results in a significant depth of transit. However, in reality there are many considerations that need to be made to obtain useful measurements. This paper and the accompanying website lay out a procedure based on timeseries differential photometry that has been successfully employed using 0.4 m aperture telescopes to predict the expected precision for a whole light curve. This enables robust planning to decide whether the observation of a particular exoplanet transit should be attempted, and in particular to be able to readily see when it should not to be attempted. This may result in a significant increase in the number of transit observations captured by non-specialists. The technique and website are also appropriate for planning a variety of variable star observations where a prediction of the light curve can be made.Peer reviewe

A paradigm shift: Anarchism has entered the chat

    Get PDF
IntroductionResponding directly to Mayo’s (2022) article Covid-19 and Mutual Aid: prefigurative approaches to caring? published in Vol.13(3), this reflection seeks to further the conversation on the ways that ‘mutual aid’ has entered community development discourse in the aftermath of the global pandemic. It does so by drawing on the extensive legacy of the practice to suggest some of the limitations of sharing individual experiences, stressing the ways in which mutual aid rejects capitalistic self-importance (Roxburgh, 2021; Spade, 2020b)

Beyond Sectoral Values: Radical Organisational Responses to Human Need

    Get PDF
In this time of successive crises of austerity, poverty, and the Covid-19 Coronavirus, this article offers a critical reflection on community-based practice, professionalisation of the community development sector, and the limitations imposed on radically-inclined organisations and activists who become entwined with funding criteria and imposed outcomes. Anarchist literature from Graeber (2011) and Kinna (2021) form a central theoretical lens from which to approach the topic, whilst Beck and Purcell (2020) support a critical assessment of the complicated cycles many community collectives or organisations go through as they become more intimately connected with the state. Three Edinburgh-based informal groups - Autonomous Centre Edinburgh (A.C.E.), Edinburgh Helping Hands (E.H.H.), and Mutual Aid Trans Edinburgh (M.A.T.E.) - serve as brief case studies of radical practices, whilst the author’s own employer, the Tollcross Community Action Network (T.C.A.N.) is assessed in terms of anarchistic influence on practice when viewed in relation to state-imposed practice outcomes. &nbsp

The 'Importance of Winning': Affect, Just War and the 'Familiarization' of Success

    Get PDF
The primary aim of this dissertation is to engage critically a puzzling element of Just War Theory (JWT): that ethical criteria for justifying decisions to go to war have been augmented by an important prudential consideration-the probability that engaging in war will (or will not) be successful. If this is to continue to be a part of JWT, the criteria of probable success must be fleshed out. I argue that the objective indicator that the decision to go to war will be successful is lacking or misconstrued. Against the notion of success as prudential, this dissertation will show that the probability of success is not a matter of rationality or prudentiality but rather becomes essential or expected when attached to specific emotional memories, metaphors and cultural symbols; and central not secondary (as suggested in JWT) to particular war aims. This is, furthermore enabled by a recent culture of permissibility in the use of JWT and augmented by important internal and structural inconsistencies which are incompatible with conflict realities. In order to demonstrate the complicated reality of action beyond prudentiality, the dissertation employs an important and appropriate method, Weber's "ideal-types", in order to demonstrate that success in war for the United States is "affectively familiar" action, not merely prudential. The dissertation concludes by suggesting that JWT scholars must get outside of the instrumental structure itself, take a look back and examine if and how the assumptions about criteria and their placement enable this problem in the first place
