CP violation and a search for New Physics in LHCb
Abstract: The physics program of LHCb concerns the study of CP violation in the B system, including more precise determination of the CKM matrix parameters and in particular the determination of phi(s). The search for new physics which could manifest itself indirectly is a high priority. The main advantages of LHCb over the B factories are the access to the Bs system and very large B production rates. In addition, LHCb is a dedicated B physics experiment with excellent vertexing and particle identification capabilities. It is currently setting up its detector in its allocated LHC interaction region and is foreseen to be ready for data taking in November 2007 for the pilot run
A fatherâs tale: stories and experiences offathers whose children have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Very little has been researched about the experience of fathering a child with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). An explorative narrative research design was used to gain a better understanding of how fathers (N=10) experience their children who have been diagnosed with ASD, and thus answer the question: âWhat stories do fathers of children with ASD tell about fatherhood and about their fathering experiences?â Data to inform this study was gathered through in-depth and unstructured interviews. Each of the fathersâ narratives was storied using Clandinin and Connellyâs (2000) notion of human experience that is defined in terms interaction, correct, continuity, and situation. The resulting narratives were written in the âthird-person-omniscientâ. This phase of the study was followed by a âcommentary phaseâ that sought to describe the connectedness between the 10
narratives storied. The study illustrates how the challenges fathers of children diagnosed with ASD encountered affected their fathering experiences and their notions of fatherhood. The study also sheds light on the aspirations, hopes, dreams, concerns and reservations these fathers have with regards to the future of their children
Physics opportunities with future proton accelerators at CERN
We analyze the physics opportunities that would be made possible by upgrades
of CERN's proton accelerator complex. These include the new physics possible
with luminosity or energy upgrades of the LHC, options for a possible future
neutrino complex at CERN, and opportunities in other physics including rare
kaon decays, other fixed-target experiments, nuclear physics and antiproton
physics, among other possibilities. We stress the importance of inputs from
initial LHC running and planned neutrino experiments, and summarize the

Perceptual Reports in (Dialects of) Arabic
This paper offers what is to our knowledge the ?rst description and analy-sis of the encoding of perceptual reports in Arabic: we focus here on ModernStandard Arabic (MSA) and Maltese (MT) building on the analytic frame-work offered by Asudeh and Toivonen (2012) (henceforth AT). We show thata range of different syntactic constructions are used to encode perceptual re-ports with seem-class redicates while the core semantic observation devel-oped in AT, concerning the distinction between types of PSOURCE, is foundto hold robustly in these languages. In the light of the data we outline, an im-portant question for future work turns out to be that of distinguishing casesof (genuine) copy-raising from constructions with thematic subjects (for theverbs in question). While Maltese is ideologically and sociolinguistically aseparate language, it shares many key aspects of its syntax with the Westernvernaculars of Arabic, and is fruitfully considered as a dialect of Arabic forthe purposes of cross-dialectal compariso
The oral condition of elderly institutionalized males
A survey was carried out in the summer of 1966 of the oral condition of all male patients over 60 years old, at Saint Vincent de Paul Hospital Malta, a government geriatric institution. All the patients were examined with regards to the number and condition of the teeth, the presence of calculus and periodontal disease, and the degree of dental attrition. A questionnaire was completed on the drinking and smoking habits, masticatory ability, dry feeling of oral mucosa and subjective evaluation of dentures, when present. Further related subjects discussed following this survey are leukoplakia, pigmentation and other lesions. The geriatric patient tends to respond to noxious stimuli in an atrophic rather than in a productive manner so that dental and oral symptoms of disease are not prominent. This was evident in this survey and very few of the patients had any specific oral complaints. The dental surgeon has an important role in the health team looking after geriatric patients and should keep his patients under constant surveillance rather than wait for specific complaints.peer-reviewe
Attitudes towards and effects of the use of video games in classroom learning with specific reference to literacy attainment
The first part of this study shows that there is increased support for using video games in the classroom from different stakeholders, namely students, teachers and parents. The potential role that video games can play in the classroom learning process needs to be more well defined. There is a dire need for research work under experimental conditions which measures tangibly the effectiveness of videogame use in classroom learning. The experimental study described here seeks to address this need and focuses on the very important area of literacy attainment. The Experimental Group of students which used the videogame in the classroom obtained significant gains on a number of English as a Second Language items when compared to the other group of students which followed their regular programme. This study makes a claim for teachers to be supported in their endeavours to harness video games as a teaching and learning tool. However, the role of teachers in this process requires redefinition. It calls also for the concerns of teachers to be addressed if they are to feel they can play a significant role in the adoption of video games in classroom learning.peer-reviewe
