Cameron provides an eye-opening comparative study of the profound impact that captives of warfare and raiding have had on small- scale societies through time. Cameron provides a new point of orientation for archaeologists, anthropologists, historians, and other scholars by illuminating the impact that captive-taking and enslavement have had on cultural change, with important implications for understanding the past.Focusing primarily on indigenous societies in the Americas while extending the comparative reach to include Europe, Africa, and Island Southeast Asia, Cameron draws on ethnographic, ethnohistoric, historic, and archaeological data to examine the roles that captives played in small-scale societies. In such societies, captives represented an almost universal social category consisting predominantly of women and children and constituting 10 to 50 percent of the population in a given society.     Improving Summer/Autumn Feed Quality in New Zealand Hill Country

    Pasture management in spring has a strong influence on pasture quality in summer and autumn in New Zealand hill country pastures. Manipulation of defoliation frequency and intensity during mid-late spring can impact summer and autumn pasture quality and quantity (Orr et al. 1988). Summer/autumn management is mainly concerned with maintaining herbage quality in summer wet areas and controlling animal pressure in summer dry areas for drought management and winter feed stocks (Clark 1994). Deferred grazing to transfer pasture growth from late spring into summer and autumn deficits is difficult due to detrimental effects on pasture quality, plant density and species composition (Sheath et al. 1987). Various grazing management models have been published to inform hill farmers of pasture management considerations during this period (Smith and Dawson 1977; Sheath and Bircham 1983; Sheath et al. 1987). It has previously been shown that management of late spring surpluses to restrict reproductive growth will increase summer pasture quality through a reduction in accumulated stem and dead material and an increase in clover content (Sheath et al. 1987). However, there is no information on the longevity of these effects.     Landcover change in mangroves of Fiji: implications for climate change mitigation and adaptation in the Pacific

    Mangrove coverage in Fiji is among the highest of all Pacific island nations. These ecosystems store disproportionate amounts of carbon, provide critically important resources for communities, and protect coastal communities against the impacts of tropical cyclones. They are therefore vital in mitigating and adapting to the impacts of climate change. An improved understanding of both the scale and drivers of mangrove loss in Fiji can underpin sustainable management strategies and achieve climate change mitigation and adaptation goals. In this study we assessed mangrove cover, landcover change, and drivers of landcover change for Fiji between 2001 and 2018,as well as the impacts of landcover change on the structural characteristics of mangroves at selected sites on the Fijian island of Viti Levu. Results were then framed within the context of developing management responses, including the potential to develop forest carbon projects. We found Fiji’s mangrove estate to be 65,243 ha, with a loss of 1135 ha between 2001 and 2018 and an annual rate of loss of 0.11%. Tropical cyclones accounted for 77% of loss (~870 ha), with highest losses along the northern coastlines of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Mangrove structural characteristics showed high variability in the level of damage incurred, with taller riverine and hinterland vegetation sustaining greater levels of damage than coastal fringing or scrub mangroves. There was no tropical cyclone damage evident along the southern coastline of Viti Levu, with small-scale harvesting the predominate driver of loss in this region. Because of the large effect of cyclone damage on mangroves in the region, small to medium scale restoration projects may be appropriate interventions to increase mangrove cover and carbon stocks. Where harvesting of mangroves occurs, improved management to avoid deforestation could also provide opportunities to maintain mangrove cover and carbon stocks

    Preparing for a Northwest Passage: A Workshop on the Role of New England in Navigating the New Arctic (March 25 - 27, 2018 -- The University of New Hampshire) paired two of NSF\u27s 10 Big Ideas: Navigating the New Arctic and Growing Convergence Research at NSF. During this event, participants assessed economic, environmental, and social impacts of Arctic change on New England and established convergence research initiatives to prepare for, adapt to, and respond to these effects. Shipping routes through an ice-free Northwest Passage in combination with modifications to ocean circulation and regional climate patterns linked to Arctic ice melt will affect trade, fisheries, tourism, coastal ecology, air and water quality, animal migration, and demographics not only in the Arctic but also in lower latitude coastal regions such as New England. With profound changes on the horizon, this is a critical opportunity for New England to prepare for uncertain yet inevitable economic and environmental impacts of Arctic change

    An Examination of Gender Differences in the Construct Validity of the Silencing the Self Scale

    Jack’s (1991) theory of self-silencing was originally designed to explain higher rates of depression in women in comparison to men. However, research finding that men score equal or even higher than women on measures of self-silencing has led theorists to speculate that self-silencing tendencies may be driven by different motivations and have different consequences for women versus men (Jack & Ali, 2010). Using a sample of 247 college students, we examined gender differences in the construct validity of the Silencing the Self Scale (STSS; Jack & Dill, 1992). We hypothesized that women would score higher on the Externalized Self-Perception subscale, but not in the other three subscales. Gender differences in the relationship between the STSS subscales and theoretically relevant constructs were also explored. The results indicated that women on average scored higher than men on the Externalized Self-Perception subscale, whereas men scored higher on the Care as Self-Sacrifice subscale. Further, there was a significant Gender × Care as Self-Sacrifice subscale interaction in the prediction of depression, such that this subscale was negatively correlated to depression in men and uncorrelated in women. These results clarify how self-silencing might translate into different mental health outcomes for women and men.     Successful Establishment of Oversown Chicory and Plantain on Uncultivatable Hill Country

    All-year grazing of livestock on steep, non-arable hill country (\u3e 20o slope angle, \u3c 1,000 m elevation) is a significant feature of New Zealand agriculture. Hill country pastures are in various states of improvement depending on factors such as extent of subdivision, fertiliser inputs, plant species introduction, and grazing management. Numerous introduced grass, legume and herb species are available to match the many micro-sites in steep hill country (Kemp et al. 1999). There has been increasing use of the perennial herbs chicory (Chicorium intybus L.) and plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.) in seed mixtures used on a range of topographies, mostly flat to undulating terrain. Advantages of these species include tolerance of drought and high summer temperatures, highly palatable foliage, enhanced mineral content, and high animal growth rates (Stewart 1996; Li and Kemp 2005). Farmers have sown these species on hill country but there is negligible information on their establishment in such landscapes. As part of a large, New Zealand-wide programme to increase pasture productivity on non-arable hill country through new germplasm introduction, chicory and plantain were included in a seed mixture broadcast-sown at a range of sites.     A critical review of the long-term disability outcomes following hip fracture

This review aims to quantify the impact of hip fracture on older people’s abilities and quality of life over the long term. Methods: Studies were identified through PubMed and Scopus searches and contact with experts. Cohort studies of hip fracture patients reporting outcomes 3 months post-fracture or longer were included for review. Outcomes of mobility, participation in domestic and community activities, health, accommodation or quality of life were categorised according to the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Functioning and synthesised narratively. Risk of bias was assessed according to four items from the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) statement. Results: Thirty-eight studies from 42 publications were included for review. Most followed a clearly defined sample from the time of fracture. Hip fracture survivors experienced significantly worse mobility, independence in function, health, quality of life and higher rates of institutionalisation than age matched controls. The bulk of recovery of walking ability and activities for daily living occurred within 6 months after fracture. Between 40 and 60 % of study participants recovered their pre-fracture level of mobility and ability to perform instrumental activities of daily living, while 40–70 % regained their level of independence for basic activities of daily living. For people independent in self-care pre-fracture, 20–60 % required assistance for various tasks 1 and 2 years after fracture. Fewer people living in residential care recovered their level of function than those living in the community. In Western nations, 10–20 % of hip fracture patients are institutionalised following fracture. Few studies reported impact on participation in domestic, community, social and civic life. Conclusions: Hip fracture has a substantial impact on older peoples’ medium- to longer-term abilities, function, quality of life and accommodation. These studies indicate the range of current outcomes rather than potential improvements with different interventional approaches. Future studies should measure impact on life participation and determine the proportion of people that regain their pre-fracture level of functioning to investigate strategies for improving these important outcomes.     Synthesis of methacrylate-terminated block copolymers with reduced transesterification by controlled ring-opening polymerization

    This work presents a robust method to achieve the synthesis of low molecular weight polyesters 26 via ring-opening polymerization (ROP) initiated by 2-hydroxyethyl-methacrylate (HEMA) 27 when using triazabicyclodecene (TBD) as catalyst. The effect that the HEMA:TBD ratio has 28 upon the final reaction rate and final polymer molecular architecture is discussed. The optimum 29 HEMA:TBD ratio and reaction conditions required to minimize competing transesterification 30 reactions were determined, in order to synthesize successfully the target ROP macromonomer 31 species containing only a single 2-methacryloyloxyethyl end-group. Additionally, to confirm 32 the terminal end-group fidelity of the product macromonomers and confirm TBD utility for 33 block copolymer manufacture, a small series of di-block polyesters were synthesized using 34 TBD and shown to exhibit good control over the final polymer structure whilst negating the 35 side transesterification reactions, irrespective of the monomers used

    Applying artificial intelligence to big data in hepatopancreatic and biliary surgery: a scoping review

    Aim: Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its applications in healthcare are rapidly developing. The healthcare industry generates ever-increasing volumes of data that should be used to improve patient care. This review aims to examine the use of AI and its applications in hepatopancreatic and biliary (HPB) surgery, highlighting studies leveraging large datasets.Methods: A PRISMA-ScR compliant scoping review using Medline and Google Scholar databases was performed (5th August 2022). Studies focusing on the development and application of AI to HPB surgery were eligible for inclusion. We undertook a conceptual mapping exercise to identify key areas where AI is under active development for use in HPB surgery. We considered studies and concepts in the context of patient pathways - before surgery (including diagnostics), around the time of surgery (supporting interventions) and after surgery (including prognostication).Results: 98 studies were included. Most studies were performed in China or the USA (n = 45). Liver surgery was the most common area studied (n = 51). Research into AI in HPB surgery has increased rapidly in recent years, with almost two-thirds published since 2019 (61/98). Of these studies, 11 have focused on using “big data” to develop and apply AI models. Nine of these studies came from the USA and nearly all focused on the application of Natural Language Processing. We identified several critical conceptual areas where AI is under active development, including improving preoperative optimization, image guidance and sensor fusion-assisted surgery, surgical planning and simulation, natural language processing of clinical reports for deep phenotyping and prediction, and image-based machine learning.Conclusion: Applications of AI in HPB surgery primarily focus on image analysis and computer vision to address diagnostic and prognostic uncertainties. Virtual 3D and augmented reality models to support complex HPB interventions are also under active development and likely to be used in surgical planning and education. In addition, natural language processing may be helpful in the annotation and phenotyping of disease, leading to new scientific insights

    What is the 'problem' that outreach work seeks to address and how might it be tackled? Seeking theory in a primary health prevention programme

    <b>Background</b> Preventive approaches to health are disproportionately accessed by the more affluent and recent health improvement policy advocates the use of targeted preventive primary care to reduce risk factors in poorer individuals and communities. Outreach has become part of the health service response. Outreach has a long history of engaging those who do not otherwise access services. It has, however, been described as eclectic in its purpose, clientele and mode of practice; its effectiveness is unproven. Using a primary prevention programme in the UK as a case, this paper addresses two research questions: what are the perceived problems of non-engagement that outreach aims to address; and, what specific mechanisms of outreach are hypothesised to tackle these.<p></p> <b>Methods</b> Drawing on a wider programme evaluation, the study undertook qualitative interviews with strategically selected health-care professionals. The analysis was thematically guided by the concept of 'candidacy' which theorises the dynamic process through which services and individuals negotiate appropriate service use.<p></p> <b>Results</b> The study identified seven types of engagement 'problem' and corresponding solutions. These 'problems' lie on a continuum of complexity in terms of the challenges they present to primary care. Reasons for non-engagement are congruent with the concept of 'candidacy' but point to ways in which it can be expanded.<p></p> <b>Conclusions</b> The paper draws conclusions about the role of outreach in contributing to the implementation of inequalities focused primary prevention and identifies further research needed in the theoretical development of both outreach as an approach and candidacy as a conceptual framework
