Studying High Energy Final State Interactions by N/D Method
We discuss the final state interaction effects at high energies via a
multi-channel N/D method. We find that the 2 by 2 charge--exchange final state
interactions typically contribute an enhancement factor of a few times
in the meson decay amplitudes, both for the real and the
imaginary part. We also make some discussions on the elastic rescattering
effects.Comment: 10 pages, revte
Solvable Examples of Drift and Diffusion of Ions in Non-uniform Electric Fields
The drift and diffusion of a cloud of ions in a fluid are distorted by an
inhomogeneous electric field. If the electric field carries the center of the
distribution in a straight line and the field configuration is suitably
symmetric, the distortion can be calculated analytically. We examine the
specific examples of fields with cylindrical and spherical symmetry in detail
assuming the ion distributions to be of a generally Gaussian form. The effects
of differing diffusion coefficients in the transverse and longitudinal
directions are included
Next-to-leading order QCD corrections to Z boson pair production via vector-boson fusion
Vector-boson fusion processes are an important tool for the study of
electroweak symmetry breaking at hadron colliders, since they allow to
distinguish a light Higgs boson scenario from strong weak boson scattering. We
here consider the channels WW->ZZ and ZZ->ZZ as part of electroweak Z boson
pair production in association with two tagging jets. We present the
calculation of the NLO QCD corrections to the cross sections for p p -> e+ e-
mu+ mu- + 2 jets and p p -> e+ e- nu_mu nubar_mu + 2 jets via vector-boson
fusion at order alpha_s alpha^6, which is performed in the form a NLO
parton-level Monte Carlo program. The corrections to the integrated cross
sections are found to be modest, while the shapes of some kinematical
distributions change appreciably at NLO. Residual scale uncertainties typically
are at the few percent level.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure
A systematic phenomenological study of the asymmetry in unpolarized semi--inclusive DIS
We study the azimuthal asymmetry in unpolarized semi-inclusive
DIS, taking into account both the perturbative contribution (gluon emission and
splitting) and the non perturbative effects arising from intrinsic transverse
motion and transverse spin of quarks. In particular we explore the possibility
to extract from some information about the Boer--Mulders
function $h_1^{\perp}$, which represents a transverse--polarization asymmetry
of quarks inside an unpolarized hadron. Predictions are presented for the
HERMES, COMPASS and JLab kinematics, where is dominated by the
kinematical higher--twist contribution, and turns to be of order of few
percent. We show that a larger asymmetry in production, compared to
production, would represent a signature of the Boer--Mulders effect.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figure
Azimuthal Correlation in Lepton-Hadron Scattering via Charged Weak-Current Processes
We consider the azimuthal correlation of the final-state particles in charged
weak-current processes. This correlation provides a test of perturbative
quantum chromodynamics. The azimuthal asymmetry is large in the semi-inclusive
processes in which we identify a final-state hadron, say, a charged pion
compared to that in the inclusive processes in which we do not identify
final-state particles and use only the calorimetric information. In
semi-inclusive processes the azimuthal asymmetry is more conspicuous when the
incident lepton is an antineutrino or a positron than when the incident lepton
is a neutrino or an electron. We analyze all the possible charged weak-current
processes and study the quantitative aspects of each process. We also compare
this result to the ep scattering with a photon exchange.Comment: 25 pages, 2 Postscript figures, uses RevTeX, fixes.st
The W_L W_L scattering at the LHC: improving the selection criteria
We present a systematic study of the different mechanisms leading to WW pair
production at the LHC, both in the same-sign and opposite-sign channels, and we
emphasize that the former offers much better potential for investigating
non-resonant W_L W_L scattering. We propose a new kinematic variable to isolate
the W_L W_L scattering component in same-sign WW production at the LHC.
Focusing on purely leptonic W decay channels, we show that it considerably
improves the LHC capabilities to shed light on the electroweak symmetry
breaking mechanism after collecting 100 fb^{-1} of data at sqrt{s} = 14 TeV.
The new variable is less effective in the opposite-sign WW channel due to
different background composition.Comment: 25 pages, 32 figure
Geometric scaling in high-energy QCD at nonzero momentum transfer
We show how one can obtain geometric scaling properties from the
Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) equation. We start by explaining how, this property
arises for the b-independent BK equation. We show that it is possible to extend
this model to the full BK equation including momentum transfer. The saturation
scale behaves like max(q,Q_T) where q is the momentum transfer and Q_T a
typical scale of the target.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. Talk given by G. Soyez at the "Rencontres de

Relativistic Effects in S-Wave Quarkonium Decay
The decay widths of S-wave quarkonia (\etc,\etb\to \gg{~~and~~}
\J,\U\to\ee) are calculated on the basis of a quasipotential approach. The
nontrivial dependence on relative quark motion of decay amplitude is taken into
consideration via quarkonium wave function. It is shown that relativistic
corrections may be large (10-50 %) and comparable with QCD corrections.Comment: 10 pages, no figure
Enhancing the heavy Higgs signal with jet-jet profile cuts
The jet-jet profile, or detailed manner, in which transverse energy and mass
are distributed around the jet-jet system resulting from the hadronic decay of
a boson in the process Higgs at a proton-proton collider energy of
40\tev is carefully examined. Two observables are defined that can be used to
help distinguish the -jet-jet signal from Higgs decay from the
``ordinary'' QCD background arising from the large transverse momentum
production of single bosons plus the associated jets. By making cuts on
these observables, signal to background enhancement factors greater than
can be obtained.Comment: 16 pages, Univ. Florida IFT-93-
