Parity violating pion electroproduction off the nucleon
Parity violating (PV) contributions due to interference between and
exchange are calculated for pion electroproduction off the nucleon. A
phenomenological model with effective Lagrangians is used to determine the
resulting asymmetry for the energy region between threshold and
resonance. The resonance is treated as a Rarita-Schwinger field with
phenomenological transition currents. The background contributions
are given by the usual Born terms using the pseudovector Lagrangian.

Grain coarsening behaviour of solution annealed Alloy 625 between 600–800°C
As with all alloys, the grain structure of the nickel-base superalloy 625 has a significant impact on its mechanical properties. Predictability of the grain structure evolution in this material is particularly pertinent because it is prone to inter-metallic precipitate formation both during manufacture and long term or high temperature service. To this end, analysis has been performed on the grain structure of Alloy 625 aged isothermally at temperatures between 600 and 800 °C for times up to 3000 h. Fits made according to the classical Arrhenius equation describing normal grain growth yield an average value for the activation energy of a somewhat inhomogeneous grain structure above 700 °C of 108.3±6.6 kJ mol−1 and 46.6±12.2 kJ mol−1 below 650 °C. Linear extrapolation between 650 and 700 °C produces a significantly higher value of 527.7±23.1 kJ mol−1. This result is ultimately a consequence of a high driving force, solute-impeded grain boundary migration process operating within the alloy. Comparison of the high and low temperature values with the activation energy for volume self-diffusion and grain boundary diffusion identifies the latter as the principle governing mechanism for grain growth in both instances. A decrease in the value of the time exponent (n) at higher temperatures despite a reduction in solute drag is attributable to the Zener pinning imposed by grain boundary M6C and M23C6 particles identified from Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDXS) analysis. Vickers hardness results show the dominance of intermetallic intragranular precipitates in the governance of the mechanical properties of the material with grain coarsening being accompanied by a significant increase in hardness. Furthermore, the lack of any correlation with grain growth behaviour indicates these phases have no significant effect on the grain evolution of the material
Onset of entanglement
We have developed a theory of polymer entanglement using an extended
Cahn-Hilliard functional, with two extra terms. One is a nonlocal attractive
term, operating over mesoscales, which is interpreted as giving rise to
entanglement, and the other a local repulsive term indicative of excluded
volume interactions. We show how such a functional can be derived using notions
from gauge theory. We go beyond the Gaussian approximation, to the one-loop
level, to show that the system exhibits a crossover to a state of entanglement
as the average chain length between points of entanglement decreases. This
crossover is marked by critical slowing down, as the effective diffusion
constant goes to zero. We have also computed the tensile modulus of the system,
and we find a corresponding crossover to a regime of high modulus.Comment: 18 pages, with 4 figure
Effects of solute Nb atoms and Nb precipitates on isothermal transformation kinetics from austenite to ferrite
Nb is a very important micro-alloying element in low-carbon steels, for grain size refinement and precipitation strengthening, and even a low content of Nb can result in a significant effect on phase transformation kinetics from austenite to ferrite. Solute Nb atoms and Nb precipitates may have different effects on transformation behaviors, and these effects have not yet been fully characterized. This paper examines in detail the effects of solute Nb atoms and Nb precipitates on isothermal transformation kinetics from austenite to ferrite. The mechanisms of the effects have been analyzed using various microscopy techniques. Many solute Nb atoms were found to be segregated at the austenite/ferrite interface and apply a solute drag effect. It has been found that solute Nb atoms have a retardation effect on ferrite nucleation rate and ferrite grain growth rate. The particle pinning effect caused by Nb precipitates is much weaker than the solute drag effect
Azimuthal asymmetries in lepton-pair production at a fixed-target experiment using the LHC beams (AFTER)
A multi-purpose fixed-target experiment using the proton and lead-ion beams
of the LHC was recently proposed by Brodsky, Fleuret, Hadjidakis and Lansberg,
and here we concentrate our study on some issues related to the spin physics
part of this project (referred to as AFTER). We study the nucleon spin
structure through and processes with a fixed-target experiment using
the LHC proton beams, for the kinematical region with 7 TeV proton beams at the
energy in center-of-mass frame of two nucleons GeV. We calculate
and estimate the azimuthal asymmetries of unpolarized and
dilepton production processes in the Drell--Yan continuum region and at the
-pole. We also calculate the , and
azimuthal asymmetries of and dilepton production
processes with the target proton and deuteron longitudinally or transversally
polarized in the Drell--Yan continuum region and around resonances region.
We conclude that it is feasible to measure these azimuthal asymmetries,
consequently the three-dimensional or transverse momentum dependent parton

Azimuthal asymmetries of charged hadrons produced by high-energy muons scattered off longitudinally polarised deuterons
Azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive production of positive (h^+) and
negative hadrons (h^-) have been measured by scattering 160 GeV muons off
longitudinally polarised deuterons at CERN. The asymmetries were decomposed in
several terms according to their expected modulation in the azimuthal angle phi
of the outgoing hadron. Each term receives contributions from one or several
spin and transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution and fragmentation
functions. The amplitudes of all phi-modulation terms of the hadron asymmetries
integrated over the kinematic variables are found to be consistent with zero
within statistical errors, while the constant terms are nonzero and equal for
h^+ and h^- within the statistical errors. The dependencies of the
phi-modulated terms versus the Bjorken momentum fraction x, the hadron
fractional momentum z, and the hadron transverse momentum p_h^T were studied.
The x dependence of the constant terms for both positive and negative hadrons
is in agreement with the longitudinal double-spin hadron asymmetries, measured
in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. The x dependence of the sin
phi-modulation term is less pronounced than that in the corresponding HERMES
data. All other dependencies of the phi-modulation amplitudes are consistent

Measurement of the B0-anti-B0-Oscillation Frequency with Inclusive Dilepton Events
The - oscillation frequency has been measured with a sample of
23 million \B\bar B pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II
asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we select events in which both B
mesons decay semileptonically and use the charge of the leptons to identify the
flavor of each B meson. A simultaneous fit to the decay time difference

Dapagliflozin and cardiovascular outcomes in type 2 diabetes
BACKGROUND
The cardiovascular safety profile of dapagliflozin, a selective inhibitor of sodium–
glucose cotransporter 2 that promotes glucosuria in patients with type 2 diabetes,
is undefined.
METHODS
We randomly assigned patients with type 2 diabetes who had or were at risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease to receive either dapagliflozin or placebo. The primary safety outcome was a composite of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE),
defined as cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or ischemic stroke. The primary efficacy outcomes were MACE and a composite of cardiovascular death or hospitalization for heart failure. Secondary efficacy outcomes were a renal composite
(≥40% decrease in estimated glomerular filtration rate to <60 ml per minute per
1.73 m2
of body-surface area, new end-stage renal disease, or death from renal or
cardiovascular causes) and death from any cause.
RESULTS
We evaluated 17,160 patients, including 10,186 without atherosclerotic cardiovascular
disease, who were followed for a median of 4.2 years. In the primary safety outcome
analysis, dapagliflozin met the prespecified criterion for noninferiority to placebo with
respect to MACE (upper boundary of the 95% confidence interval [CI], <1.3; P<0.001
for noninferiority). In the two primary efficacy analyses, dapagliflozin did not result
in a lower rate of MACE (8.8% in the dapagliflozin group and 9.4% in the placebo
group; hazard ratio, 0.93; 95% CI, 0.84 to 1.03; P=0.17) but did result in a lower rate
of cardiovascular death or hospitalization for heart failure (4.9% vs. 5.8%; hazard
ratio, 0.83; 95% CI, 0.73 to 0.95; P=0.005), which reflected a lower rate of hospitalization for heart failure (hazard ratio, 0.73; 95% CI, 0.61 to 0.88); there was no
between-group difference in cardiovascular death (hazard ratio, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.82 to
1.17). A renal event occurred in 4.3% in the dapagliflozin group and in 5.6% in the
placebo group (hazard ratio, 0.76; 95% CI, 0.67 to 0.87), and death from any cause
occurred in 6.2% and 6.6%, respectively (hazard ratio, 0.93; 95% CI, 0.82 to 1.04). Diabetic ketoacidosis was more common with dapagliflozin than with placebo (0.3%
vs. 0.1%, P=0.02), as was the rate of genital infections that led to discontinuation of the
regimen or that were considered to be serious adverse events (0.9% vs. 0.1%, P<0.001).
CONCLUSIONS
In patients with type 2 diabetes who had or were at risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, treatment with dapagliflozin did not result in a higher or lower rate
of MACE than placebo but did result in a lower rate of cardiovascular death or hospitalization for heart failure, a finding that reflects a lower rate of hospitalization

A search for the decay
We search for the rare flavor-changing neutral-current decay in a data sample of 82 fb collected with the {\sl BABAR}
detector at the PEP-II B-factory. Signal events are selected by examining the
properties of the system recoiling against either a reconstructed hadronic or
semileptonic charged-B decay. Using these two independent samples we obtain a
combined limit of
at the 90% confidence level. In addition, by selecting for pions rather than

High-reflectivity broadband distributed Bragg reflector lattice matched to ZnTe
We report on the realization of a high quality distributed Bragg reflector
with both high and low refractive index layers lattice matched to ZnTe. Our
structure is grown by molecular beam epitaxy and is based on binary compounds
only. The high refractive index layer is made of ZnTe, while the low index
material is made of a short period triple superlattice containing MgSe, MgTe,
and ZnTe. The high refractive index step of Delta_n=0.5 in the structure
results in a broad stopband and the reflectivity coefficient exceeding 99% for
