Formation of mesic nuclei
We study the structure and formation of the mesic nuclei to
investigate the in-medium modification of the -meson spectral function at
finite density. We consider (), () and ()
reactions to produce a -meson inside the nucleus and evaluate the effects
of its medium modifications to the reaction cross sections. We also estimate
the consequences of the uncertainties of the selfenergy in medium to
the -nucleus interaction. We find that it may be possible to see a peak
structure in the reaction spectra for the strong attractive potential cases. On
the other hand, for strong absorptive interaction cases with relatively weak
attractions, it is very difficult to observe clear peaks and we may need to
know the spectrum shape in a wide energy region to deduce the properties of

Stars and brown dwarfs in the sigma Orionis cluster. III. OSIRIS/GTC low-resolution spectroscopy of variable sources
Context. Although many studies have been performed so far, there are still
dozens of low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in the young sigma Orionis open
cluster without detailed spectroscopic characterisation. Aims. We look for
unknown strong accretors and disc hosts that were undetected in previous
surveys. Methods. We collected low-resolution spectroscopy (R ~ 700) of ten
low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in sigma Orionis with OSIRIS at the Gran
Telescopio Canarias under very poor weather conditions. These objects display
variability in the optical, infrared, Halpha, and/or X-rays on time scales of
hours to years. We complemented our spectra with optical and near-/mid-infrared
photometry. Results. For seven targets, we detected lithium in absorption,
identified Halpha, the calcium doublet, and forbidden lines in emission, and/or
determined spectral types for the first time. We characterise in detail a
faint, T Tauri-like brown dwarf with an 18 h-period variability in the optical
and a large Halpha equivalent width of -125+/-15 AA, as well as two M1-type,
X-ray-flaring, low-mass stars, one with a warm disc and forbidden emission
lines, the other with a previously unknown cold disc with a large inner hole.
Conclusions. New unrevealed strong accretors and disc hosts, even below the
substellar limit, await discovery among the list of known sigma Orionis stars
and brown dwarfs that are variable in the optical and have no detailed

A novel route to Pt-Bi2O3 composite thin films and their application in photo-reduction of water
A novel homoleptic bismuth(III) β-diketonate (dibenzoylmethane – dbm) complex [Bi(dbm)3]2 has been used as a precursor to thin films of crystalline β-Bi2O3, and hexachloroplatinic acid (H2PtCl6·6H2O) has been demonstrated as a suitable precursor for deposition of platinum nanoparticles, both deposited via aerosol-assisted chemical vapour deposition (AACVD). Thin films of Pt–Bi2O3 were co-deposited from a mixture of [Bi(dbm)3]2 and H2PtCl6·6H2O; the introduction of Pt particles into β-Bi2O3 causes hydrogen to be evolved during photolysis of water over the composite material, a property not found for Pt particles or β-Bi2O3 alone
Nonlinear spin-polarized transport through a ferromagnetic domain wall
A domain wall separating two oppositely magnetized regions in a ferromagnetic
semiconductor exhibits, under appropriate conditions, strongly nonlinear I-V
characteristics similar to those of a p-n diode. We study these characteristics
as functions of wall width and temperature. As the width increases or the
temperature decreases, direct tunneling between the majority spin bands
decreases the effectiveness of the diode. This has important implications for
the zero-field quenched resistance of magnetic semiconductors and for the
design of a recently proposed spin transistor.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
A comparison between continuous categorical emotion responses and stimulus loudness parameters
This paper investigates the use of psychoacoustic loudness analysis as a method for determining the likely emotional responses of listeners to musical excerpts. 19 excerpts of music were presented to 86 participants (7 randomly chosen excerpts per participant) who were asked to rate the emotion category using the emotion-clock-face continuous response interface. The same excerpts were analysed with a loudness model, and time series results were summarised as both loudness median and standard deviation. Comparisons indicate that the median and standard deviation of loudness plays an important role in determining the emotion category responses. © 2013 IEEE
Disintegration of Magnetic Flux in Decaying Sunspots as Observed with the Hinode SOT
Continuous observations of sunspot penumbrae with the Solar Optical Telescope
aboard \textit{Hinode} clearly show that the outer boundary of the penumbra
fluctuates around its averaged position. The penumbral outer boundary moves
inward when granules appear in the outer penumbra. We discover that such
granules appear one after another while moving magnetic features (MMFs) are
separating from the penumbral ``spines'' (penumbral features that have stronger
and more vertical fields than those of their surroundings). These granules that
appear in the outer penumbra often merge with bright features inside the
penumbra that move with the spines as they elongate toward the moat region.
This suggests that convective motions around the penumbral outer boundary are
related to the disintegration of magnetic flux in the sunspot. We also find
that dark penumbral filaments frequently elongate into the moat region in the
vicinity of MMFs that detach from penumbral spines. Such elongating dark
penumbral filaments correspond to nearly horizontal fields extending from the
penumbra. Pairs of MMFs with positive and negative polarities are sometimes
observed along the elongating dark penumbral filaments. This strongly supports
the notion that such elongating dark penumbral filaments have magnetic fields
with a ``sea serpent''-like structure. Evershed flows, which are associated
with the penumbral horizontal fields, may be related to the detachment of the
MMFs from the penumbral spines, as well as to the formation of the MMFs along
the dark penumbral filaments that elongate into the moat region.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap
