    New mechanism for impurity-induced step bunching

    Codeposition of impurities during the growth of a vicinal surface leads to an impurity concentration gradient on the terraces, which induces corresponding gradients in the mobility and the chemical potential of the adatoms. Here it is shown that the two types of gradients have opposing effects on the stability of the surface: Step bunching can be caused by impurities which either lower the adatom mobility, or increase the adatom chemical potential. In particular, impurities acting as random barriers (without affecting the adatom binding) cause step bunching, while for impurities acting as random traps the combination of the two effects reduces to a modification of the attachment boundary conditions at the steps. In this case attachment to descending steps, and thus step bunching, is favored if the impurities bind adatoms more weakly than the substrate.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures.     OB Stars in the Solar Neighborhood I: Analysis of their Spatial Distribution

    We present a newly-developed, three-dimensional spatial classification method, designed to analyze the spatial distribution of early type stars within the 1 kpc sphere around the Sun. We propose a distribution model formed by two intersecting disks -the Gould Belt (GB) and the Local Galactic Disk (LGD)- defined by their fundamental geometric parameters. Then, using a sample of about 550 stars of spectral types earlier than B6 and luminosity classes between III and V, with precise photometric distances of less than 1 kpc, we estimate for some spectral groups the parameters of our model, as well as single membership probabilities of GB and LGD stars, thus drawing a picture of the spatial distribution of young stars in the vicinity of the Sun.Comment: 28 pages including 9 Postscript figures, one of them in color.     Disrupted asteroid P/2016 G1. II. Follow-up observations from the Hubble Space Telescope

    After the early observations of the disrupted asteroid P/2016 G1 with the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC), and the modeling of the dust ejecta, we have performed a follow-up observational campaign of this object using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) during two epochs (June 28 and July 11, 2016). The analysis of these HST images with the same model inputs obtained from the GTC images revealed a good consistency with the predicted evolution from the GTC images, so that the model is applicable to the whole observational period from late April to early July 2016. This result confirms that the resulting dust ejecta was caused by a relatively short-duration event with onset about 350 days before perihelion, and spanning about 30 days (HWHM). For a size distribution of particles with a geometric albedo of 0.15, having radii limits of 1 μ\mum and 1 cm, and following a power-law with index --3.0, the total dust mass ejected is \sim2×\times107^7 kg. As was the case with the GTC observations, no condensations in the images that could be attributed to a nucleus or fragments released after the disruption event were found. However, the higher limiting magnitude reachable with the HST images in comparison with those from GTC allowed us to impose a more stringent upper limit to the observed fragments of \sim30 m.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures Accepted by Astronomical Journal, Nov. 2, 201

    ϕ\phi meson transparency in nuclei from ϕN\phi N resonant interactions

    We investigate the ϕ\phi meson nuclear transparency using some recent theoretical developments on the ϕ\phi in medium self-energy. The inclusion of direct resonant ϕN\phi N-scattering and the kaon decay mechanisms leads to a ϕ\phi width much larger than in most previous theoretical approaches. The model has been confronted with photoproduction data from CLAS and LEPS and the recent proton induced ϕ\phi production from COSY finding an overall good agreement. The results support the need of a quite large direct ϕN\phi N-scattering contribution to the self-energy

    The 2011 October Draconids Outburst. II. Meteoroid Chemical Abundances from Fireball Spectroscopy

    On October 8, 2011 the Earth crossed dust trails ejected from comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner in the late 19th and early 20th Century. This gave rise to an outburst in the activity of the October Draconid meteor shower, and an international team was organized to analyze this event. The SPanish Meteor Network (SPMN) joined this initiative and recorded the October Draconids by means of low light level CCD cameras. In addition, spectroscopic observations were carried out. Tens of multi-station meteor trails were recorded, including an extraordinarily bright October Draconid fireball (absolute mag. -10.5) that was simultaneously imaged from three SPMN meteor ob-serving stations located in Andalusia. Its spectrum was obtained, showing a clear evolution in the relative intensity of emission lines as the fireball penetrated deeper into the atmosphere. Here we focus on the analysis of this remarkable spectrum, but also discuss the atmospheric trajectory, atmospheric penetration, and orbital data computed for this bolide which was probably released during 21P/Giacobini-Zinner return to perihelion in 1907. The spectrum is discussed together with the tensile strength for the October Draconid meteoroids. The chemical profile evolution of the main rocky elements for this extremely bright bolide is compared with the elemental abundances obtained for 5 October Draconid fireballs also recorded during our spectroscopic campaign but observed only at a single station. Significant chemical heterogeneity between the small meteoroids is found as we should expect for cometary aggregates being formed by diverse dust components.Comment: Manuscript in press in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.     A spatially-structured PCG method for content diversity in a Physics-based simulation game

    This paper presents a spatially-structured evolutionary algorithm (EA) to procedurally generate game maps of di ferent levels of di ficulty to be solved, in Gravityvolve!, a physics-based simulation videogame that we have implemented and which is inspired by the n- body problem, a classical problem in the fi eld of physics and mathematics. The proposal consists of a steady-state EA whose population is partitioned into three groups according to the di ficulty of the generated content (hard, medium or easy) which can be easily adapted to handle the automatic creation of content of diverse nature in other games.     Natural origin products as a source of new antiviral molecules

    Motivation: Human adenovirus (HAdV) is a DNA virus that can cause a wide range of diseases, including respiratory and gastrointestinal infections, or conjunctivitis, that in immunocompetent individuals are ausually mild and self-limited. However, in immunosuppresed people and especially in pediatric units, HAdV infections present high morbidity and mortality. Currently there is no specific treatment approved against HAdV. The aim of this work was to characterize the anti-HAdV activity of 18 compounds that were previously selected after high-troughput screening (HTP) of a library of 1340 compounds, coming from our collaboration with the European initiative COSTACTION CM 1407Methods: We had evaluated the anti-HAdV activity of the compounds performing in vitro assays: plaque assays to calculate the IC50 value, citotoxicity assays to calculate the CC50 value, yield reduction assays and qPCR in real time to evaluate the inhibitory effect, and nucleocitoplasm assays to evaluate their mechanism of action.Results: It has been proven that 2 compounds, BBN75 and GSAED772E-1S2R have a safe selectivity index, a great inhibitory effect and they may act in steps subsequent to the arrival of the viral genome at the nucleus of the host cell.Conclusions: The results indicates that BBN75 and GSAED772E-1S2R are promising anti-HAdV drugs to be evaluated at in vivo assays

    Hormonal regulation of female reproduction

    Reproduction is an event that requires the coordination of peripheral organs with the nervous system to ensure that the internal and external environments are optimal for successful procreation of the species. This is accomplished by the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis that coordinates reproductive behavior with ovulation. The primary signal from the central nervous system is gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which modulates the activity of anterior pituitary gonadotropes regulating follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) release. As ovarian follicles develop they release estradiol, which negatively regulates further release of GnRH and FSH. As estradiol concentrations peak they trigger the surge release of GnRH, which leads to LH release inducing ovulation. Release of GnRH within the central nervous system helps modulate reproductive behaviors providing a node at which control of reproduction is regulated. To address these issues, this review focuses on several critical questions. How is the HPG axis regulated in species with different reproductive strategies? What internal and external conditions modulate the synthesis and release of GnRH? How does GnRH modulate reproductive behavior within the hypothalamus?
