Concurrent sketching model for the industrial product conceptual design
[EN] Conceptual design is one of the earliest stages of product development, and is responsible for defining key aspects of the final product. The
systematic approach addresses this stage by using a disaggregate model of product attributes and their corresponding geometries. This
ultimately serves as a starting point for exploring conceptual proposals. Research into the emergence of various sketch typologies shows
that they are labeled according to aim rather than technical utility. The proposed sketch-based model is intended to serve as a comprehensive
version of the systematic model for conceptual design (Hernandis & Briede, 2009). Sketch outlines are used during various stages of the
model in order to enable and visually assist with cognitive processes and decision-making during the initial theoretical stages, which are
abstract and poorly defined.[ES] El diseño conceptual, en el diseño de nuevos productos, es la etapa temprana donde se definen aspectos claves del producto final. El enfoque
sistémico aborda dicha fase a través de un modelo de desagregación teórica de los atributos del producto y su asociación a geometrías que
las representen, sirviendo de base para realizar la exploración de la propuesta conceptual. La investigación en torno al origen de las diversas
tipologías de boceto demuestra que se nombran en función de su propósito más que en su instrumentalización técnica. El modelo de
abocetado concurrente planteado busca ser un modelo ampliado del modelo sistémico para el diseño conceptual (Hernandis&Briede, 2009),
que asocia el uso de las tipologías de boceto a las diversas etapas del modelo para facilitar y apoyar visualmente los procesos cognitivos y

Participants involvement in the conceptual design phase os a product. Case study of the impact of systemic methodology in a chilean SME
[EN] A case study is presented on collaborative conceptual design using a model that facilitates knowledge integration among participants (the client, user and expert). In Chile, regional small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are traditionally focused on short-term production goals, and they often approach design and product development in an intuitive and largely improvised manner. In the present study an expanded model for conceptual design proposed by Hernandis and Briede (2009) is applied to the case of one SME: a regional graphic design and product design firm. The application of the model yielded positive results in improving communication between stakeholders, shortening the time required for developing alternatives and supporting a disaggregated analysis of the design process, all of which enables management of available information.[ES] En el presente caso de estudio se aborda el diseño conceptual de manera colaborativa, a través de un modelo que guía la integración del conocimiento de los agentes implicados en un proyecto (cliente, usuario, experto). En Chile la pequeña y mediana empresa (pyme) regional, orientada tradicionalmente a la producción para obtener beneficios a corto plazo, aborda el diseño y desarrollo de productos de manera intuitiva y muchas veces improvisada. Se aplica un modelo ampliado para el diseño conceptual de Hernandis y Briede (2009) en una pyme regional, cuya labor es prestar servicios de diseño gráfico y de productos. Los beneficios de la aplicación del modelo favorecen el aumento de la fluidez de comunicación con los stakeholders, la reducción de tiempos de desarrollo de alternativas y el registro desagregado del proceso de diseño para facilitar la gestión de la información disponible.Los autores agradecen a la Comisión Nacional Científica y Tecnológica el financiamiento der este trabajo a través del

Design of sustainable products in chile: identifying implementation barriers for small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises in the biobio region
Global climate change and dwindling natural resources have emphasized the need for system-wide sustainable development, from individual consumer habits to product design and manufacturing. In order to better understand sustainable consumption and production practices in Chile, the present research aims to identify the barriers for the implementtation of sustain ability practices in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the national manufacturing sector. A preliminary study was carried out using the following three core components: an analysis of sustainable development practices across the world, an analysis of prior research on sustainable consumption in Chile, and finally, fieldwork on SMEs in the Biobio region. The general aim was to identify factors driving local sustainable production. Results show that the main barriers to sustainable development among domestic SMEs include the role of market demand in shaping product manufacturing and the fact that environmental concerns do not influence consumption patterns and/or trends.Briede Westermeyer, JC.; Cabello Mora, MB.; Cereceda Balic, G.; Pacheco-Blanco, B.
