    Eye movement pattern in face recognition is associated with cognitive decline in the elderly

    Conference Theme: Mind, Technology, and SocietyThe present study investigated the relationship between eye movement pattern in face recognition and cognitive perform-ance during natural aging through modeling and comparing eye movement of young (18-24 years) and older (65-81 years) adults using Hidden Markov Model (HMM) based approach. Young adults recognized faces better than older adults, particularly when measured by the false alarm rate. Older adults’ recognition performance, on the other hand, correlated with their cognitive status assessed by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Eye movement analysis with HMM revealed two different strategies, namely “analytic” and “holistic”. Participants using the analytic strategy had better recognition performance (particularly in the false alarm rate) than those using the holistic strategy. Significantly more young adults adopted the analytic strategy; whereas more older adults adopted the holistic strategy. Interestingly, older adults with lower cognitive status were associated with higher likelihood of using the holistic strategy.     Proinflammatory cytokine response and viral replication in mouse bone marrow derived macrophages infected with influenza H1N1 and H5N1 viruses

    The pathogenesis of human influenza H5N1 virus infection remains poorly understood and controversial. Cytokine dysregulation in human infection has been hypothesized to contribute to disease severity. We developed in vitro cultures of mouse bone marrow derived macrophages (BMDMΦ) from C57BL/6N mouse to compare influenza A (H5N1 and H1N1) virus replication and pro-inflammatory cytokine and chemokine responses. While both H1N1 and H5N1 viruses infected the mouse bone marrow derived macrophages, only the H1N1 virus had showed evidence of productive viral replication from the infected cells. In comparison with human seasonal influenza H1N1 (A/HK/54/98) and mouse adapted influenza H1N1 (A/WSN/33) viruses, the highly pathogenic influenza H5N1 virus (A/HK/483/97) was a more potent inducer of the chemokine, CXCL 10 (IP-10), while there was not a clear differential TNF-α protein expression pattern. Although human influenza viruses rarely cause infection in mice without prior adaption, the use of in vitro cell cultures of primary mouse cells is of interest, especially given the availability of gene-defective (knock-out) mice for specific genes.published_or_final_versio

    Analytic eye movement patterns in face recognition are associated with better performance and more top-down control of visual attention: an fMRI study

The present study investigated the neural correlates of these two patterns through functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). A more holistic pattern was associated with more activation in the face-selective perceptual areas, including the occipital face area and fusiform face area. In contrast, participants using a more analytic pattern demonstrated more activation in areas important for top-down control of visual attention, including the frontal eye field and intraparietal sulcus. In addition, participants using the analytic patterns had better recognition performance than those showing holistic patterns. These results suggest that analytic eye movement patterns are associated with more engagement of top-down control of visual attention, which may consequently enhance recognition performance.postprin

    Experimental investigation of a double-bed adsorption cooling system for application in green buildings

    Paper presented to the 10th International Conference on Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics, Florida, 14-16 July 2014.In this study, an adsorption cooling system with silica gel as the adsorbent and water as the adsorbate was built and the system performance was studied experimentally under various working conditions. The adsorption cooling system contains two adsorbers in a u-tube and circular plate fin structure, an evaporator (chilled water tank), two condensers, one heating and one cooling water tank, and is equipped with measuring instruments and supplementary system components. Under the standard operation condition: adsorber cooling water inlet temperature about 34 °C, desorption temperature of 80 °C, evaporating temperature of 14 °C and adsorption/desorption phase time of 15 minutes, the coefficient of performance (COP) of the adsorption cooling system was recorded at about 0.3 while the specific cooling power (SCP) was about 39.1 W/kg.dc201

    Study of heat and mass recovery process on the performance of adsorption cooling systems

    Paper presented to the 10th International Conference on Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics, Florida, 14-16 July 2014.A double-bed adsorption cooling system with silica gel as adsorbent and water as adsorbate was developed and tested and various operating sequence have been tried. The experimental results show that heat recovery cycle will increase the coefficient of performance (COP) and specific cooling power (SCP) by about 41.2% and 15.1%, respectively if compared with basic cycle. Besides, the results also indicated that mass recovery cycle can help to enhance the cooling performance of the adsorption cooling systems as well. The COP and SCP were enhanced to 0.25 and 67.7 W/kg, which were improved by about 47.1% and 40.5% respectively comparing to the basic cycle. The optimized operation sequence for this adsorption cooling system prototype is heat recovery of 37 seconds and mass recovery of 23 seconds. The COP and SCP under this optimized sequence were recorded at 0.34 and 75 W/kg, respectively, which were about 100% and 55.6% increase comparing to the basic cycle.dc201
