Development of policies and practices of social responsibility in Portuguese companies: implications of the SA8000 standard
Series: Management and Industrial EngineeringThis study aims to explore the implications of the SA8000 standard in the implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policies and practices in Portuguese companies. Although this is not a recent issue, it is a subject that has motivated a growing interest on the part of the business and academic community. CSR should be seen as a new business management model, which includes universal human values as well as ethical decisions that ensure the satisfaction of the interests and needs of all stakeholders and the community in general. Regarding the empirical aspect of this research, a qualitative approach was followed through the application of a semi-structured interview to certified and not certified companies by SA8000 standard, in order to understand possible disparities with regard to the implementation of CSR policies and practices. Although the certification is the guarantee of the commitment of the companies with the CSR, the truth is that this is seen by the companies as a form of differentiation in the market. Cell migration leads to spatially distinct but clonally related airway cancer precursors
Background Squamous cell carcinoma of the lung is a common cancer with 95% mortality at 5 years. These cancers arise from preinvasive lesions, which have a natural history of development progressing through increasing severity of dysplasia to carcinoma in situ (CIS), and in some cases, ending in transformation to invasive carcinoma. Synchronous preinvasive lesions identified at autopsy have been previously shown to be clonally related. Methods Using autofluorescence bronchoscopy that allows visual observation of preinvasive lesions within the upper airways, together with molecular profiling of biopsies using gene sequencing and loss-of-heterozygosity analysis from both preinvasive lesions and from intervening normal tissue, we have monitored individual lesions longitudinally and documented their visual, histological and molecular relationship. Results We demonstrate that rather than forming a contiguous field of abnormal tissue, clonal CIS lesions can develop at multiple anatomically discrete sites over time. Further, we demonstrate that patients with CIS in the trachea have invariably had previous lesions that have migrated proximally, and in one case, into the other lung over a period of 12 years. Conclusions Molecular information from these unique biopsies provides for the first time evidence that field cancerisation of the upper airways can occur through cell migration rather than via local contiguous cellular expansion as previously thought. Our findings urge a clinical strategy of ablating high-grade premalignant airway lesions with subsequent attentive surveillance for recurrence in the bronchial tree
Charged Dilatonic AdS Black Branes in Arbitrary Dimensions
We study electromagnetically charged dilatonic black brane solutions in
arbitrary dimensions with flat transverse spaces, that are asymptotically AdS.
This class of solutions includes spacetimes which possess a bulk region where
the metric is approximately invariant under Lifshitz scalings. Given fixed
asymptotic boundary conditions, we analyze how the behavior of the bulk up to
the horizon varies with the charges and derive the extremality conditions for
these spacetimes.Comment: References update
Holographic RG flow of the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio in strongly coupled anisotropic plasma
We study holographic RG flow of the shear viscosity tensor of anisotropic,
strongly coupled N=4 super-Yang-Mills plasma by using its type IIB supergravity
dual in anisotropic bulk spacetime. We find that the shear viscosity tensor has
three independent components in the anisotropic bulk spacetime away from the
boundary, and one of the components has a non-trivial RG flow while the other
two have a trivial one. For the component of the shear viscosity tensor with
non-trivial RG flow, we derive its RG flow equation, and solve the equation
analytically to second order in the anisotropy parameter 'a'. We derive the RG
equation using the equation of motion, holographic Wilsonian RG method, and
Kubo's formula. All methods give the same result. Solving the equation, we find
that the ratio of the component of the shear viscosity tensor to entropy
density 'eta/s' flows from above '1/4pi' at the horizon (IR) to below '1/4pi'
at the boundary (UV) where it violates the holographic shear viscosity
(Kovtun-Son-Starinets) bound and where it agrees with the other longitudinal

Cosmology of the selfaccelerating third order Galileon
In this paper we start from the original formulation of the galileon model
with the original choice for couplings to gravity. Within this framework we
find that there is still a subset of possible Lagrangians that give
selfaccelerating solutions with stable spherically symmetric solutions. This is
a certain constrained subset of the third order galileon which has not been
explored before. We develop and explore the background cosmological evolution
of this model drawing intuition from other even more restricted galileon
models. The numerical results confirm the presence of selfacceleration, but
also reveals a possible instability with respect to galileon perturbations.Comment: 30 pages, 24 figure

Hidden conformal symmetry of extreme and non-extreme Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion black holes
The hidden conformal symmetry of extreme and non-extreme
Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion (EMDA) black holes is addressed in this paper.
For the non-extreme one, employing the wave equation of massless scalars, the
conformal symmetry with left temperature and right
temperature in the near region is
found. The conformal symmetry is spontaneously broken due to the periodicity of
the azimuthal angle. The microscopic entropy is derived by the Cardy formula
and is fully in consistence with the Bekenstein-Hawking area-entropy law. The
absorption cross section in the near region is calculated and exactly equals
that in a 2D CFT. For the extreme case, by redefining the conformal
coordinates, the duality between the solution space and CFT is studied. The

Stringy Stability of Charged Dilaton Black Holes with Flat Event Horizon
Electrically charged black holes with flat event horizon in anti-de Sitter
space have received much attention due to various applications in Anti-de
Sitter/Conformal Field Theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence, from modeling the
behavior of quark-gluon plasma to superconductor. Crucial to the physics on the
dual field theory is the fact that when embedded in string theory, black holes
in the bulk may become vulnerable to instability caused by brane
pair-production. Since dilaton arises naturally in the context of string
theory, we study the effect of coupling dilaton to Maxwell field on the
stability of flat charged AdS black holes. In particular, we study the
stability of Gao-Zhang black holes, which are locally asymptotically anti-de
Sitter. We find that for dilaton coupling parameter > 1, flat black
holes are stable against brane pair production, however for 0 < < 1,
the black holes eventually become unstable as the amount of electrical charges
is increased. Such instability however, behaves somewhat differently from that
of flat Reissner-Nordstr\"om black holes. In addition, we prove that the
Seiberg-Witten action of charged dilaton AdS black hole of Gao-Zhang type with
flat event horizon (at least in 5-dimension) is always logarithmically
divergent at infinity for finite values of , and is finite and positive
in the case tends to infinity . We also comment on the robustness of
our result for other charged dilaton black holes that are not of Gao-Zhang

Lorentz violation and Crab synchrotron emission: a new constraint far beyond the Planck scale
Special relativity asserts that physical phenomena appear the same for all
inertially moving observers. This symmetry, called Lorentz symmetry, relates
long wavelengths to short ones: if the symmetry is exact it implies that
spacetime must look the same at all length scales. Several approaches to
quantum gravity, however, suggest that there may be a Lorentz violating
microscopic structure of spacetime, for example discreteness,
non-commutativity, or extra dimensions. Here we determine a very strong
constraint on a type of Lorentz violation that produces a maximum electron
speed less than the speed of light. We use the observation of 100 MeV
synchrotron radiation from the Crab nebula to improve the previous limits by a
factor of 40 million, ruling out this type of Lorentz violation, and thereby
