Improving approximate number sense abilities in preschoolers : PLUS games

    Get PDF
Previous studies in both typically and atypically developing children have shown that approximate number system (ANS) abilities predict formal mathematical knowledge later on in life. The current study investigated whether playing specially designed training games that targets the ANS system using nonsymbolic stimuli only would improve preschool children\u2019s ANS abilities. Thirty-eight preschool children were randomly allocated to either the training or control group. For 5 weeks, 20 preschoolers (9 girls) in the training group played daily games for 10 min that included guessing and comparing numerosities, whereas 18 control children (6 girls) were involved in interactive picture book reading sessions. Children\u2019s ANS abilities were assessed using a computerized task before and after the training program. An analysis of covariance with posttraining ANS scores as dependent variable and pretraining scores as a covariate showed that the children in the training group had higher ANS abilities after the training, in contrast to children in the control group. This study provides evidence that ANS abilities can be improved in preschool children through a daily training program that targets the ANS specifically. These findings provide support for further training programs for preschool children who show mathematical difficulties early on in life

Twenty-nine interviews were conducted with members of organizations working with the subjects as well as eight observations of groups of participants. The results indicated the challenges posed to selecting proper sites and measures to avoid overcrowding. Furthermore, the potential for involving participants, instructors and local communities in keeping the natural environment and in managing outdoor sports provide opportunities. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that outdoor sports must be avoided in some areas of the city. However, opportunities can mitigate the challenges through proactive management and promotion of outdoor sports. Enabling+ Quality Assurance Plan

This document, the Quality Assurance Plan (QAP), is the instrument that the project’ team develop to ensure that quality is managed effectively during the project, and that the final products are of proven quality and the objectives of the project are achieved (and how). As written in the main document of the project, “the quality assurance plan describes criteria for evaluation, follow-up, activities to be organised (focus groups, questionnaires, etc)”. This QAP is committed to the informed (scientifically, technically) approach underlying the project and an internal assessment attitude that will guide the implementation of the project’s work packages and inform the final report. In addition, it closely considers the external evaluation to happen at the end of the project. The theoretical background of this plan is based in the proposal that internal and external evaluation (EI/E) are ‘different sides of the same coin’, they form part of the same quality assurance plan, and they are interactive and mutual interconnected. With the assessment we intend to reflect on the day-to-day practice, and to be able to do the internal evaluation (self-assessment report and self-assessment of the activities and products), and this will be done in connection with external evaluation process. Next, we briefly expose (1) some conceptual inspirations to the QAP; (2) quality assurance strategies already considered in the project; and (3) an internal evaluation proposal.Enablin+ project. Histoplasmosis is a systemic mycosis caused by inhalation of Histoplasma capsulatum microconidia. The disease does not normally affect immunocompetent individuals after a single, transient inhalation exposure. However, longer exposure may cause chronic or disseminated acute pulmonary infection. Herein, we report the case of a 24-year-old immunocompetent patient, who presented fever, cough and dyspnea for one month. The chest radiography revealed interstitial infiltrate and diffuse micronodules. The patient reported having had close and prolonged contact with bats. Diagnosis was confirmed by positive double immunodifusion and immunoblotting assays. She was treated with ketoconazole (400 mg) and there was complete resolution of the disease

Ni-doped Hibonite (CaAl12O19): A New Turquoise Blue Ceramic Pigment

    Get PDF
A new structure for ceramic pigments was synthesized by a conventional solid state reaction process. It is based on Ni-doped hibonite, CaAl12O19, which assumes a turquoise-like blue colour similar to that of V-doped zircon. Hibonite is associated with anorthite, CaAl2Si2O8, acting like a fluxing agent in order to lower the synthesis temperature, and with cassiterite, SnO2, acting as a tin buffer to promote coupled Ni2+ + Sn4+ -> Al3+ + Al3+ substitution, in order to ensure the electric neutrality of the hibonite lattice. Since relatively low chromophore contents are required, this new system constitutes an interesting alternative to the common blue ceramic pigments based on cobalt aluminate spinel or vanadium-doped zircon, implying lower cost and environmental advantages. The pigments characterization was performed by X-ray powder diffraction, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, CIELAB colourimetric analysis, and testing in ceramic glazes and bodies. The substitution of Al3+ by bigger ions, like Ni2+ and Sn4+, increases the cell volume compared to undoped hibonite and is responsible of the turquoise blue colour, as verified by UV-Vis analysis. The chromatic mechanism is due to incorporation of Ni2+ in tetrahedral coordination, likely occurring at the site M3 of the hibonite lattice, where it partially substitutes the Al3+ ion. While this product shows a strong hue as a pigment, it is not stable after severe testing in glazes and attempts to improve its colouring performance are now under development

Entry and fiscal policy effectiveness in a small open economy within a Monetary Union

    Get PDF
In this article I develop an imperfectly competitive dynamic general equilibrium model for a small open economy integrated in a monetary union. Here, the type of entry in the non-traded goods’ sector affects fiscal policy effectiveness. Fiscal policy effectiveness is enlarged when aggregate demand stimuli increase intra-industrial competition (case I). This is due to the counter-cyclical mark-up mechanism generated by entry. Such a mechanism is absent in the usual monopolistic competition where entry only has a sharing effect (case II).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
