Ricci-flat deformation of orbifolds and localized tachyonic modes
We study Ricci-flat deformations of orbifolds in type II theory. We obtain a
simple formula for mass corrections to the twisted modes due to the
deformations, and apply it to originally tachyonic and massless states in
several examples. In the case of supersymmetric orbifolds, we find that
tachyonic states appear when the deformation breaks all the supersymmetries. We
also study nonsupersymmetric orbifolds C^2/Z_{2N(2N+1)}, which is T-dual to N
type 0 NS5-branes. For N>=2, we compute mass corrections for states, which have
string scale tachyonic masses. We find that the corrected masses coincide to
ones obtained by solving the wave equation for the tachyon field in the smeared
type 0 NS5-brane background geometry. For N=1, we show that the unstable mode
representing the bubble creation is the unique tachyonic mode.Comment: 20 pages, minor collection
Factors controlling spatio-temporal variation in carbon dioxide efflux from surface litter, roots, and soil organic matter at four rain forest sites in the eastern Amazon
[1] This study explored biotic and abiotic causes for spatio-temporal variation in soil respiration from surface litter, roots, and soil organic matter over one year at four rain forest sites with different vegetation structures and soil types in the eastern Amazon, Brazil. Estimated mean annual soil respiration varied between 13-17 t C ha(-1) yr(-1), which was partitioned into 0-2 t C ha(-1) yr(-1) from litter, 6-9 t C ha(-1) yr(-1) from roots, and 5-6 t C ha(-1) yr(-1) from soil organic matter. Litter contribution showed no clear seasonal change, though experimental precipitation exclusion over a one-hectare area was associated with a ten-fold reduction in litter respiration relative to unmodified sites. The estimated mean contribution of soil organic matter respiration fell from 49% during the wet season to 32% in the dry season, while root respiration contribution increased from 42% in the wet season to 61% during the dry season. Spatial variation in respiration from soil, litter, roots, and soil organic matter was not explained by volumetric soil moisture or temperature. Instead, spatial heterogeneity in litter and root mass accounted for 44% of observed spatial variation in soil respiration (p < 0.001). In particular, variation in litter respiration per unit mass and root mass accounted for much of the observed variation in respiration from litter and roots, respectively, and hence total soil respiration. This information about patterns of, and underlying controls on, respiration from different soil components should assist attempts to accurately model soil carbon dioxide fluxes over space and time
Charging Interacting Rotating Black Holes in Heterotic String Theory
We present a formulation of the stationary bosonic string sector of the whole
toroidally compactified effective field theory of the heterotic string as a
double Ernst system which, in the framework of General Relativity describes, in
particular, a pair of interacting spinning black holes; however, in the
framework of low--energy string theory the double Ernst system can be
particularly interpreted as the rotating field configuration of two interacting
sources of black hole type coupled to dilaton and Kalb--Ramond fields. We
clarify the rotating character of the --component of the
antisymmetric tensor field of Kalb--Ramond and discuss on its possible torsion
nature. We also recall the fact that the double Ernst system possesses a
discrete symmetry which is used to relate physically different string vacua.
Therefore we apply the normalized Harrison transformation (a charging symmetry
which acts on the target space of the low--energy heterotic string theory
preserving the asymptotics of the transformed fields and endowing them with
multiple electromagnetic charges) on a generic solution of the double Ernst
system and compute the generated field configurations for the 4D effective
field theory of the heterotic string. This transformation generates the
vector field content of the whole low--energy heterotic string
spectrum and gives rise to a pair of interacting rotating black holes endowed
with dilaton, Kalb--Ramond and multiple electromagnetic fields where the charge
vectors are orthogonal to each other.Comment: 15 pages in latex, revised versio
Sigma-phase in Fe-Cr and Fe-V alloy systems and its physical properties
A review is presented on physical properties of the sigma-phase in Fe-Cr and
Fe-V alloy systems as revealed both with experimental -- mostly with the
Mossbauer spectroscopy -- and theoretical methods. In particular, the following
questions relevant to the issue have been addressed: identification of sigma
and determination of its structural properties, kinetics of alpha-to-sigma and
sigma-to-alpha phase transformations, Debye temperature and Fe-partial phonon
density of states, Curie temperature and magnetization, hyperfine fields,

Dual Spaces of Resonance In Thick Branes
In this work we consider form fields in a brane embedded in a
space-time. The membrane is generated by a domain wall in a
Randall-Sundrum-like scenario. We study conditions for localization of zero
modes of these fields. The expression agrees and generalizes the one found for
the zero, one, two and three-forms in a brane. By a generalization we mean
that our expression is valid for any form in an arbitrary dimension with
codimension one. We also point out that, even without the dilaton coupling,
some form fields are localized in the membrane. The massive modes are
considered and the resonances are calculated using a numerical method. We find
that different spaces have identical resonance structures, which we call dual
spaces of resonances(DSR).Comment: 15 page
Radiative Kaon Decays and Direct CP Violation
It is stressed that a measurement of the electric dipole amplitude for direct
photon emission in \kpm decays through its interference with inner
bremsstrahlung is important for differentiating among various models. Effects
of amplitude CP violation in the radiative decays of the charged kaon are
analyzed in the Standard Model in conjunction with the large approach. We
point out that gluon and electromagnetic penguin contributions to the
CP-violating asymmetry between the Dalitz plots of \kpm are of equal weight.
The magnitude of CP asymmetry ranges from to when the photon energy in the kaon rest frame varies from 50 MeV to
