Burning of tropical brazilian rainforest of sandy soil: does it affect soil organic matter?

    Get PDF
This study aimed to investigate the impact of vegetation burning on the content and chemical composition of soil organic matter (SOM) along a profile of a sandy Acrisol in Southwestern Amazon, Brazil, within 3 years after experiment beginning(YAB).The study was performed in Rio Branco, Acre State, and the forest burning was performed under controlled conditions. Samples from 6 depth(0-100cm depth)were collected under burned forest (BF) and primary forest (PF) at 1 YAB and 3 YAB. Besides Cand N contents, humic substances and biomarkers were determined. Under PF, the C content decreased with depth from 12 to 2 g kg-1.C/N ratio ranged from 7.6 at the surface to values around 3 at 1 m depth, indicating a predominance of microbial products. Humin fraction was not detected in the whole profile. Burning of vegetation promoted an increase of C and of humic acids only at 0-5 cm. The n-alkane distribution showed a shift towards smaller chains in the 0-5 cm of BF, indicating main contribution of microbial products. Also PAH’s of high molecular weight were detected in this site. Vegetation burning imparts alterations on the SOM composition, but these tend to disappear within 3 years

Biomarker analysis in soils of the Amazon rainforest after vegetation fire.

The objective of this study was to determine the origin of organic matter incorporated in Amazon forest soils subjected to vegetation fire by analyzing the aliphatic biomarkers (n-alkanes) present in lipid extracts of soil samples

This work presents the preliminary results of a participative evaluation of eight green manure species in three land reform settlements, in Corumbá, MS. The experiment was performed in randomized blocs design, with each bloc installed in a different farm, together with a group of farmers. Beside a quantitative statistical evaluation, I was made a qualitative evaluation by technicians and farmers by a list of 13 criteria. The last criteria was a general prefernce note for each specie, with a scale varies from 1 to 10, and which results are discussed in this work. With little differences the technicians preferences were coincident with there from the farmers

This paper intended to estimate genetic values and parameters for plant height, diameter at the base of the plant and leaf-storey number of rubber tree [Hevea brasiliensis (Willd ex Adr. de Juss.) Müell, Arg.] halfsib progenies using the míxed-model methodology (Reml/Blup procedure). The rubber tree progenies were obtained from a second generation population produced from the recombination of 30 original parents, pertaining to the Instituto Agronômico de Campinas (IAC) in São Paulo state. At the age of eight months the variables were evaluated. Results demonstrated the existence of significant genetic variability among the progenies for the studied traits. The estimates of the heritability coefficient showed moderate values for both height and leaf-storey number, and low values for plant diameter at the base of the plant. There are good possibilities of genetic gain for these main traits in the context of the improvement program that was started in Mato Grosso do Sul state

Modeling enteric methane emission from beef cattle in Brazil: a proposed equation performed by principal component analysis and mixed modeling multiple regression.

Brazil has the largest commercial beef cattle herd in the world but does not have its own model to predict methane (CH4 ) emission. The aim of this study was to create the first empirical enteric CH4 emission equation from variables that describe the animal diet using a meta-analytical data from Brazilian scientific publications (n = 50, published from 2003 to 2012)
