ABC bridging tensions between logics of care and business: The perspective of paradox theory
In this paper we present an analysis of how activity-based costing (ABC) was included
amongst austerity policy prescriptions within the healthcare sector. Relying on the
proposition that an increasing quality of outcomes is achievable simultaneously with a
reduction in costs, ABC straddles the contradictory logics of care and business. We draw
on case study research and combine elements of institutional logic and paradox theory to
analyze how the introduction of ABC as a device for cost accounting can be both
integrative and disintegrative. Surprisingly, it was most integrative for those strongly
associated with the institutional logic of care and least integrative for those associated
with the logic of business. ABC became a device that made better cross-sectional
communication between administrators and clinicians possible and was able to mediate
antagonistic institutional logics but only when actor’s interests and power were aligned

INSIGHTS OF TAKE-OFF OF GROUND REACTIONS FORCE IN HIGH JUMP
The take-off plays an important role on the high jump (HJ) performance, since it is there where the trajectory of the centre of mass is defined (Tellez, 1993) in order to achieve the maximum possible height and clear the bar (Dapena, 1988). The literature has presented several studies using kinematic parameters, however there are very few studies using dynamic parameters to evaluate the take-off (Coh & Supej, 2008).
In contrast to other jumps, the HJ presents an increased complexity due to the curvilinear approach-run pathway, imposing a three-dimensional analysis of the movement. On the other hand, the point where the jumpers perform the take-off differs considerably for different subjects. For those reasons research presented in the literature is fundamentally based in the kinematics of the approach-run and take-off. Although great knowledge was achieved in the kinematic of HJ, very few studies can be found concerning the ground reaction forces (GRF). However the knowledge of the GRF pattern enables a more thorough evaluation of the jumper technique and efficiency. The purposes of this study were (i) to evaluate the HJ take-off technique using force plate data based on the characterization of the GRF pattern and (ii) definition of take-off GRF profiles as function of technical and conditional characteristics of different athletes
The muonic longitudinal shower profiles at production
In this paper the longitudinal profile of muon production along the shower
axis is studied. The characteristics of this distribution is investigated for
different primary masses, zenith angles, primary energies, and different high
energy hadronic models. It is found that the shape of this distribution
displays universal features similarly to what is known for the electromagnetic
profile. The relation between the muon production distribution and the
longitudinal electromagnetic evolution is also discussed

Quantum field theory solution for a short-range interacting SO(3) quantum spin-glass
We study the quenched disordered magnetic system, which is obtained from the
2D SO(3) quantum Heisenberg model, on a square lattice, with nearest neighbors
interaction, by taking a Gaussian random distribution of couplings centered in
an antiferromagnetic coupling, and with a width . Using
coherent spin states we can integrate over the random variables and map the
system onto a field theory, which is a generalization of the SO(3) nonlinear
sigma model with different flavors corresponding to the replicas, coupling
parameter proportional to and having a quartic spin interaction
proportional to the disorder (). After deriving the CP version of
the system, we perform a calculation of the free energy density in the limit of
zero replicas, which fully includes the quantum fluctuations of the CP
fields . We, thereby obtain the phase diagram of the system in terms of
(). This presents an ordered antiferromagnetic (AF) phase,
a paramagnetic (PM) phase and a spin-glass (SG) phase. A critical curve
separating the PM and SG phases ends at a quantum critical point located
between the AF and SG phases, at T=0. The Edwards-Anderson order parameter, as
well as the magnetic susceptibilities are explicitly obtained in each of the
three phases as a function of the three control parameters. The magnetic
susceptibilities show a Curie-type behavior at high temperatures and exhibit a
clear cusp, characteristic of the SG transition, at the transition line. The
thermodynamic stability of the phases is investigated by a careful analysis of
the Hessian matrix of the free energy. We show that all principal minors of the
Hessian are positive in the limit of zero replicas, implying in particular that
the SG phase is stable.Comment: To appear in Nucl. Phys B [FS], 16 pages, 6 figure
Factorization of matrix functions and the resolvents of certain operators
The explicit factorization of matrix functions of the form
Agamma(b) = ( (e)(b*) (b)(b*b)(+ gammae)),
where b is an n x n matrix function, a represents the identity matrix, and gamma is a complex constant, is studied. To this purpose some relations between a factorization of A, and the resolvents of the self-adjoint operators
N+ (b) = P(+)bP(-)b*P+ and N- (b) = P(-)b*P(+)bP(-) are analyzed. The main idea is to show that if b is a matrix function that can be represented through the decomposition b = b(-) + b(+) where at least one of the summands is a rational matrix, then it is possible to construct an algorithm that allows us to determine an effective canonical factorization of the matrix function A(gamma).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The average longitudinal air shower profile: exploring the shape information
The shape of the extensive air shower (EAS) longitudinal profile contains information about the nature of the primary cosmic ray. However, with the current detection capabilities, the assessment of this quantity in an event-by-event basis is still very challenging. In this work we show that the average longitudinal profile can be used to characterise the average behaviour of high energy cosmic rays. Using the concept of universal shower profile it is possible to describe the shape of the average profile in terms of two variables, which can be already measured by the current experiments. These variables present sensitivity to both average primary mass composition and to hadronic interaction properties in shower development. We demonstrate that the shape of the average muon production depth profile can be explored in the same way as the electromagnetic profile having a higher power of discrimination for the state of the art hadronic interaction models. The combination of the shape variables of both profiles provides a new powerful test to the existing hadronic interaction models, and may also provide important hints about multi-particle production at the highest energies.Peer Reviewe
