Information literacy skills to use web resources: an analysis of two Biology subjects
Students have a large amount of information readily available they can use
while enrolled in our courses. However, they must have already acquired the
necessary information literacy skills to search, evaluate, and use information in a
proper and efficient way, mainly concerning Web resources. Despite the fact that
students show high technological abilities, the analysis of the way they gather information and the quality of their sources shows that there are still important
shortcomings. The present study evaluates the information literacy skills of
students enrolled in two Biology subjects at the University of A Coruña. Results
confirm that the development of specific activities, even if they might be timecosting
for teachers, certainly improve students’ skills. Thus, we present the
organization of seminars for small groups of students in the new Grade in
Biology that can serve to improve their information literacy skills, as well as to
introduce students the process of peer-review
The new Wolf-Rayet binary system WR62a
Context. A significant number of the Wolf-Rayet stars seem to be binary or
multiple systems, but the nature of many of them is still unknown. Dedicated
monitoring of WR stars favours the discovery of new systems.
Aims. We explore the possibility that WR62a is a binary system.
Methods. We analysed the spectra of WR62a, obtained between 2002 and 2010, to
look for radial-velocity and spectral variations that would suggest there is a
binary component. We searched for periodicities in the measured radial
velocities and determined orbital solutions. A period search was also performed
on the "All-Sky Automated Survey" photometry.
Results. We find that WR62a is a double-lined spectroscopic binary with a WN5
primary star and an O 5.5-6 type secondary component in orbit with a period of
9.1447 d. The minimum masses range between 21 and 23 Mo for the WN star and
between 39 and 42 Mo for the O-type star, thus indicating that the WN star is
less massive than the O-type component. We detect a phase shift in the
radial-velocity curve of the He II 4686 emission line relative to the other
emission line curves. The equivalent width of this emission line shows a
minimum value when the WN star passes in front of the system. The analysis of
the ASAS photometry confirms the spectroscopic periodicity, presenting a
minimum at the same phase.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in A&
On the Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov Lemma for Stabilizable Systems
The Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov (KYP) lemma has been a cornerstone in system theory and network analysis and synthesis. It relates an analytic property of a square transfer matrix in the frequency domain to a set of algebraic equations involving parameters of a minimal realization in time domain. This note proves that the KYP lemma is also valid for realizations which are stabilizable and observabl
The utility and limitations of the New Ecological Paradigm scale for children
The New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) scale adapted for use with children (NEP-C) is one of the most frequently used measures of children’s environmental beliefs. Though widely utilized, the limitations of the NEP-C instrument are often overlooked. Based on a systematic synthesis of existing literature examining the NEP-C, we argue that the scale assesses specific types of beliefs within the larger NEP, that some children have difficulty comprehending items of this scale, and that the one-factor and three-factor models proposed in the original NEP-C did not achieve an exact fit to empirical data. Additionally, the relevance of the NEP-C total score as a predictor of children’s pro-environmental behaviors is questionable. Although the NEP-C is useful for measuring specific types of environmental beliefs, many researchers using this scale may be interested in broader constructs. We highlight potential benefits and drawbacks of using the NEP-C and discuss new directions for environmental education research
Bone chondrosarcoma very rarely affccts the foot. We report a case of primary

treated by wide resection. Three and half years later, there was not signs of recurrence
Experimental approval of the extended flat bands and gapped subbands in rhombohedral multilayer graphene
Graphene layers are known to stack in two stable configurations, namely ABA
or ABC stacking, with drastically distinct electronic properties. Unlike the
ABA stacking, little has been done to experimentally investigate the electronic
properties of ABC graphene multilayers. Here, we report the first magneto
optical study of a large ABC domain in a graphene multilayers flake, with ABC
sequences exceeding 17 graphene sheets. The ABC-stacked multilayers can be
fingerprinted with a characteristic electronic Raman scattering response, which
persists even at room temperatures. Tracing the magnetic field evolution of the
inter Landau level excitations from this domain gives strong evidence to the
existence of a dispersionless electronic band near the Fermi level,
characteristic of such stacking. Our findings present a simple yet powerful
approach to probe ABC stacking in graphene multilayer flakes, where this highly
degenerated band appears as an appealing candidate to host strongly correlated
states.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
Pedonais crassifaucis n.gen., n.sp. (Naididae) and Bothrioneurum righii n.sp. (Tubificidae), two new tropical soil-dwelling species of "aquatic" oligochaetes (Clitellata, Annelida) from Central Amazonia
Two new species of so-called aquatic Oligochaeta are described from soil and litter samples originating from terra firme sites of the Amazonian primary rain forest. Bothrioneurum righii n.sp. (Tubificidae) is characterized by posterior dorsal chaetae with very large distal teeth and much reduced proximal teeth. The new genus Pedonais (Naididae) resembles Allonais but differs from it in the absence of hair chaetae, in the similarity of dorsal and ventral chaetae, and in the presence of well-developed pharyngeal glands. Pedonais crassifcaucis n.sp. reproduces asexually by fragmentation and subsequent regeneration, and the same is assumed for B. righii. Sexually mature specimens were not found. Both species exhibit traits that can be conceived as adaptations of aquatic oligochaetes for a successful colonization of terrestrial habitats
