    Multiple liquid-crystals and NMR

    No full text
The use of more than one liquid crystal solvents to determine molecular structure and conformation is discussed. Liquid crystals of similar and opposite signs of diamagnetic anisotropies are considered separately since they lead to different novel applications. Advantages of such experiments over those employing single solvents are pointed out with illustrative examples

Recent Advances and Future Directions of NMR Spectroscopy of Molecules Oriented in Liquid crystals

    No full text
Recent interests in NMR spectroscopy of molecules oriented in liquid crystal solvents predominantly revolve around the developments of methods for (1) spectral simplification, (2) novel applications and (3) understanding of the solvent effects on molecular structure and function. A number of such results and their critical evaluations are presented, with emphasis on mixed liquid crystals of opposite diamagnetic susceptibility anisotropies, metal ion-ligand and weak molecular interactions and the discovery of novel liquid crystalline phase. Future directions of research, such as the use of ultra high magnetic fields, partially and perdeuterated samples and near magic angle spinning experiments, are highlighted

NMR in liquid crystals spinning at and near magic angle

    No full text
NMR spectra of liquid crystalline phases and the molecules dissolved therein, spinning at and near the magic angle provide information on the director dynamics and the order parameter. The studies on the dynamics of the liquid crystal director for sample spinning near magic angle in mesophases with positive and negative diamagnetic susceptibility anisotropies (Delta chi) and their mixtures with near-zero macroscopic diamagnetic susceptibility anisotropies have been reported. In systems with weakly positive Delta chi, the director has been observed to switch from an orientation parallel to the spinning axis at low rotational speeds to one perpendicular to the spinning axis at high rotational speeds, when the angle theta, the axis of rotation makes with the magnetic field is smaller than the magic angle theta(m). For systems with a small negative Delta chi, similar director behaviour has been observed for theta greater than theta(m). At magic angle, the spectra under slow spinning speeds exhibit a centre band and side bands at integral values of the spinning speeds. The intensities of the spinning side bands have been shown to contain information on the sign and the magnitude of the order parameter(s). The results are discussed with illustrative examples. Results on the orientation of the chemical shielding tensor obtained from a combination of the NMR studies in the solid and the liquid crystalline states, have been described

Average Orientation of Molecules Dissolved in Nematic Liquid Crystals of Opposite Diamagnetic Anisotropies

    No full text
ZLI-1167 is a ternary mixture of nematic liquid crystals with negative diamagnetic anisotropy. It has, therefore, been used as a solvent where the spinning of the samples around the vertical axis in the conventional electromagnets without destroying the orientation of the dissolved molecules is possible in NMR experiments. This results in sharp lines with widths up to 1 Hz in the spectra.1,2 In an NMR system using a superconducting magnet (where the magnetic field direction is along the axis of spinning of the sample), it is possible to use even the nematic liquid crystals with positive diamagnetic anisotropy such as N-(p'-methoxybenzylidene)-p-n-butylaniline (MBBA) or N-(p'-ethoxybenzylidene)-p-n-butylaniline (EBBA) to obtain the spectra with sample spinning with equally sharp lines.3 The orientational behaviour of the dissolved molecules as a function of relative concentrations of the two solvents is investigated and the results are reported in the present communication

Proton NMR spectra including 13C- and 77Se-satellites in organoselenium compounds oriented in the nematic phase : Part 1. The spectrum of 2,1,3-benzoselenadiazole

The vibrationally corrected structure of 2,1,3-benzoselenadiazole is derived from the proton NMR spectrum including 13C-H and 77Se-H satellites, in a nematic solvent. The results indicate considerable bond-fixation in the 6-membered ring. Reference

Cholesteric liquid crystals as solvents in NMR

    No full text
It is shown that cholesteric liquid crystal mixtures can be used as convenient solvents in NMR experiments for the determination of molecular structure. The advantages of such solvents are pointed out. The application is demonstrated for acetonitrile; the value for the HCH bond angle thus determined is 108.8°

Nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of oriented bicyclic systems containing heteroatom(s):the spectrum of 2-thiocoumarin

    No full text
From the proton nmr studies of 2-thiocoumarin and coumarin, it is concluded that the relative interproton distances in the two oxygen heteroatom bicyclic systems are similar. The values for the phenyl ring protons do not deviate significantly from the regular hexagonal geometry, unlike bicyclic systems with nitrogens as the heteroatoms, such as diazanaphthalenes. Larger values of the indirect spin-spin couplings within the protons of the ring containing the oxygen heteroatom, compared to the values between the ortho protons in the phenyl rings in coumarin and 2-thiocoumarin, correspond to the olefinic nature of these protons. This is in contrast to results for the nitrogen heterocycles where both the rings are aromatic

Sign Of The Order Parameter In Oriented Systems And Its Utility In The Study Of The Dynamic Properties Of Molecules

    No full text
Novel one and two dimensional NMR techniques are proposed and utilized for the determination of the signs of the order parameters used for the study of the mobility of the fatty acid chains. The experiments designed to extract this information involve the use of the intensities of the side bands in the spectra of oriented systems spinning at the magic angle. Advantages of the two dimensional technique over the one dimensional method are discussed. The utility of the method in the study of the dynamic properties of membranes and model systems is pointed out

Solvent-solute and solute-solute interactions from NMR in nematic phases

    No full text
The use of NMR spectroscopy of molecules oriented in liquid-crystalline media to study solvent-solute and solute-solute interactions in π-systems such as benzene-chloroform and in charge transfer complexes, for example pyridineiodine, is illustrated. Changes in molecular order and chemical shifts as a result of complexation are employed in such studies. The extraordinary symmetry of C60 has also been investigated by using a mixture of liquid crystals of opposite diamagnetic anisotropies indicating, thereby, negligible solvent-solute/solute-solute interactions
