    Teletext data change detection and noiseless data compression

    Full Channel teletext system is a high speed data broadcasting system. Pages of information are broadcast in a cyclic manner. The detection of data change in the information pages is necessary for data analysis, database update and retransmission. Lossless data compression is also necessary to enhance the data throughput in rebroadcasting and to reduce the storage requirement. Performing data change detection and data compression in real time using a software approach in a small machine is impossible for such high speed data. In this paper, we describe the algorithms that are suitable for hardware implementation for both data change detection and noiseless data compression.published_or_final_versio

    Real time teletext broadcast system performance enhancement using ghost rows

    Teletext is a one way broadcast system which provides a variety of services to its users. A one way broadcast system is attractive because a single transmission of a piece of information satisfies all potential users of that information. The main drawback of these types of systems is that a user must wait until the required information arrives. Therefore, the access time is an important consideration in the design of broadcast teletext systems. In addition, another important factor, information update delay, is very significant in real time broadcast teletext. The shortening of this delay is important.for real time applications especially for systems broadcasting financial information. In this paper, we propose to use the ghost rows together with the storage capabilities of modern terminals to shorten both the access time and the update delay.     Nucleophilic substitution by amide nitrogen in the aromatic rings of [zn − H]˙+ ions; the structures of the [b2 − H − 17]˙+ and [c1 − 17]+ ions

    Peptide radical cations that contain an aromatic amino acid residue cleave to give [zn − H]˙+ ions with [b2 − H − 17]˙+ and [c1 − 17]+ ions, the dominant products in the dissociation of [zn − H]˙+, also present in lower abundance in the CID spectra. Isotopic labeling in the aromatic ring of [Yπ˙GG]+ establishes that in the formation of [b2 − H − 17]˙+ ions a hydrogen from the δ-position of the Y residue is lost, indicating that nucleophilic substitution on the aromatic ring has occurred. A preliminary DFT investigation of nine plausible structures for the [c1 − 17]+ ion derived from [Yπ˙GG]+ shows that two structures resulting from attack on the aromatic ring by oxygen and nitrogen atoms from the peptide backbone have significantly better energies than other isomers. A detailed study of [Yπ˙GG]+ using two density functionals, B3LYP and M06-2X, with a 6-31++G(d,p) basis set gives a higher barrier for attack on the aromatic ring of the [zn − H]˙+ ion by nitrogen than by the carbonyl oxygen. However, subsequent rearrangements involving proton transfers are much higher in energy for the oxygen-substituted isomer leading to the conclusion that the [c1 − 17]+ ions are the products of nucleophilic attack by nitrogen, protonated 2,7-dihydroxyquinoline ions.     Isovaleric acidaemia is a rare inherited organic acidaemia associated with a characteristic odour in affected patients. Fewer than 40 causative mutations have been reported to date. We report a case in a Hong Kong Chinese neonate who presented with respiratory distress and acute encephalopathy requiring aggressive resuscitation and treatment. Residual gross motor developmental delay was still observed at the age of 16 months. The child was subsequently found to harbour a known missense mutation (c.A1199G [p.Y371C]) and a novel 4-bp duplication (c.1148_1151dupGCTA [p.Y355X]) in the IVD gene. We suggest that the former is a founder mutation in the Chinese population and propose an explanation for the duplication event. Strategies that may achieve early diagnosis and prompt treatment include raising awareness of this condition, implementation of a tandem mass spectrometry neonatal screening programme, and local acquisition of appropriate medications for these metabolic diseases.published_or_final_versio

    Synthetic Food Colors and Neurobehavioral Hazards: The View from Environmental Health Research

    Background: The proposition that synthetic food colors can induce adverse behavioral effects in children was first enunciated in 1975 by Feingold [Why Your Child Is Hyperactive. New York:Random House (1975)], who asserted that elevated sensitivity to food additives underlies the signs of hyperactivity observed in some children. Although the evidence suggested that some unknown proportion of children did respond to synthetic food colors, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) interpreted the evidence as inconclusive. A study published in 2007 [McCann et al. Food additives and hyperactive behaviour in 3-year-old and 8/9-year-old children in the community: a randomised, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial. Lancet 370:1560–1567 (2007)] drew renewed attention to the hypothesis because of the study’s size and scope. It led the FDA to review the evidence, hold a public hearing, and seek the advice of its Food Advisory Committee. In preparation for the hearing, the FDA reviewed the available evidence and concluded that it did not warrant further agency action

    Effectiveness of the Tier 1 Program of Project P.A.T.H.S.: Objective outcome evaluation based on a randomized group trial

    Copyright © 2008 with author(s). There are two tiers of programs in the Project P.A.T.H.S. (Positive Adolescent Training through Holistic Social Programs). In the Tier 1 Program, teaching units based on different positive youth development constructs are covered. A total of 24 experimental schools (N = 4,121 students) and 24 control schools (N = 3,854 students) were randomly selected to participate in a randomized group trial. Analyses of covariance and linear mixed models controlling for differences between the two groups in terms of pretest scores, personal variables, and random effects of schools showed that participants in the experimental schools had significantly higher positive youth development levels than did participants in the control schools at post-test based on different indicators derived from the Chinese Positive Youth Development Scale. In conjunction with other evaluation findings reported previously, the present study suggests that the Tier 1 Program of P.A.T.H.S. promotes the positive development of Chinese adolescents in Hong Kong. ©2008 with author.
