Looking ahead is always a good idea because 'the shape of the future is formed every day'. With the advent of a new century, even millenium, there is all the more reason to do so. Aeronautical and astronautical developments are likely to be of great importance to the shape of many details of the future society. The ever increasing volume of aeronautical traffic abounds with problems concerning airport size, design and location. Safety, security and traffic management pose questions one should be deeply concerned about. They will need solutions in the not too distant future. Is the mobile society sustainable? Where will the equilibrium between technical requirements and environmental concerns be located? Is liquid hydrogen fuel an answer? What are the resulting trends of future aircraft evolution? Will there be superlarge megaliners and hypersonic transport? In the long run, astronautics has an ever larger potential for changing things. The cross over point may be reached well before the middle of the next century. What course should space policy take? Could the Moon grow into the role of a giant natural space station? Will Earth oriented space applications really help to pass through the forthcoming demographic transition? What weight is space tourism going to have? These and many more questions are of paramount importance for the shape of our future. This congress made an effort to address them as best one can today.
