Numbers in the Blind's “Eye”

Background: Although lacking visual experience with numerosities, recent evidence shows that the blind perform similarly to sighted persons on numerical comparison or parity judgement tasks. In particular, on tasks presented in the auditory modality, the blind surprisingly show the same effect that appears in sighted persons, demonstrating that numbers are represented through a spatial code, i.e. the Spatial-Numerical Association of Response Codes (SNARC) effect. But, if this is the case, how is this numerical spatial representation processed in the brain of the blind? Principal Findings: Here we report that, although blind and sighted people have similarly organized numerical representations, the attentional shifts generated by numbers have different electrophysiological correlates (sensorial N100 in the sighted and cognitive P300 in the blind). Conclusions: These results highlight possible differences in the use of spatial representations acquired through modalities other than vision in the blind population

COMMISIONING OF THE FERMI@ELETTRA LASER HEATER*

Abstract The linac of the FERMI seeded free electron laser includes a laser heater to control the longitudinal microbunching instability, which otherwise is expected to degrade the quality of high brightness electron beam sufficiently to reduce the FEL power. The laser heater consists of a short undulator located in a small magnetic chicane through which an external laser pulse enters to modulate the electron beam energy both temporally and spatially. This modulation, which varies on the scale of the laser wavelength, together with the effective R52 transport term of the chicane increases the incoherent energy spread (i.e., e-beam heating). We present the first commissioning results of this system, and its impact both upon the electron beam phase space, and upon the FEL output intensity and quality

La relación como categoría esencial de la obligación y de la responsabilidad contractual

La obligación es una estructura compleja que puede subsistir sin el deber de prestación, tal como lo ha puesto de manifiesto la culpa in contrahendo. Esto ha sido aceptado por la Corte de Casación italiana, siendo criticada por algún autor. El argumento que niega la idea de la obligación sin deber primario de prestación está referido específicamente a la responsabilidad de los médicos que trabajan en un hospital. Ellos se encuentran obligados frente al hospital, por lo que no tienen ningún deber de prestación frente a los pacientes. Sin embargo, en relación con los pacientes, difícilmente se les colocaría en el nivel general del principio del alterum non laedere, el cual preside a la responsabilidad extracontractual. Su estatus profesional crea una confianza que se refleja en la responsabilidad. Como resultado, esta responsabilidad tiene naturaleza contractual, demostrando precisamente que puede existir una obligación sin prestación. La consecuencia es que es la relación y no la prestación la que constituye la esencia de la obligación

Il volume raccoglie gli scritti del prof. Luigi Mengoni in materia di obbligazioni e negozio giuridico. Tale opera, che si sviluppa durante tutto l'arco dell'esperienza scientifica di Mengoni, non aveva infatti, trovato luogo in un libro che rendesse conto del carattere unitario e sistematico del pensiero dell'Autore. La difficolt\ue0 di reperimento di articoli e piccole monografie pubblicati in un arco temporale di quasi sessanta anni appariva sempre pi\uf9 incongrua rispetto all'importanza che l'insegnamento ivi contenuto ha sempre pi\uf9 guadagnato nel tempo. Basti al riguardo menzionare il superamento da parte della Cassazione della distinzione tra obbligazioni \uabdi risultato\ubb e \uabdi mezzi\ubb, di cui Mengoni aveva diomostrato l'inconsistenza fin dal 1954 nonch\ue8 il recente ravvedimento della Suprema Corte in ordine alla natura contrattuale della responsabilit\ue0 precontrattuale, secondo la tesi magistralmente formulata dal medesimo Autore in un celebre saggio del 1956. Completa la raccolta un indice analitico che d\ue0 conto dei nessi sistematici che caratterizzano le diverse parti di un discorso unitario e coerente che investe l'intera teoria delle obbligazioni
