Improving Assessment Strategies in General Chemistry

    Get PDF
In an effort to improve assessment strategies in a general chemistry course at Valparaiso University, a new homework submission and evaluation system was implemented. Learning objectives for the course were revised to match new goals. These updated learning objectives guided the creation of homework problem sets on the LearningOnline Network with Computer-Assisted Personalized Approach (LON-CAPA). This free, open-source, distributed learning content management system provides improved homework assessment for students through immediate feedback, personalized questions, and a flexible format. Homework for the first semester general chemistry course was prepared on LON-CAPA and a simple user\u27s guide was also created for LON-CAPA to facilitate future use of the program

Intercolony Comparison of Diets of Western Gulls in Central California

As human populations expand, they force free-ranging animals to adapt to an increasingly urban environment, resulting in changes in diets, reproductive success, and mortality. The diets of two western gull (Larus occidentalis) breeding populations in central California were compared. One colony, Año Nuevo Island (ANI), is 1 km from shore and within 30 km of a municipal landfill. The other colony, Southeast Farallon Island (SEFI), is located 45 km off the shore of San Francisco, CA. Given the proximity of ANI to the shore and the landfill, I predicted that gulls from ANI would have more garbage in their diets. Indeed, gulls from ANI consumed over three times more garbage. Twenty-three percent of wet diets from gulls at ANI contained garbage, whereas garbage made up only 6% of wet diets from gulls at SEFI. Despite the appearance of garbage in gull diets, birds from both colonies consumed a range of marine prey, and Clupeiformes, Euphausiacea, and Gadiformes were important to both colonies. Isotopic values (15N and 13C) measured in gull feathers were similar between colonies, suggesting that gulls from both populations consume similar prey from the marine environment during the non-breeding phase. The reliance on stable, easily accessible food from landfills during the breeding season may be an important adaptation for western gulls to cope with urbanization and declines in prey species in the California Current during the energy-intensive chick-rearing perio

High Tech or High Risk: Moral Panics about Girls Online

Part of the Volume on Digital Young, Innovation, and the Unexpected We argue that the current moral outrage and national panic over the risks of victimization faced by girls on the Internet has nothing to do with risks faced by girls on the Internet. Based on historical, cross-cultural, and discourse analyses, we draw four conclusions. Each and every time a new communication technology is introduced, it spurs very public fears on the part of parents and educators, putatively about the effects of that technology on girls' (sexual) innocence. The statistics show that predatory behavior on adolescent girls has a certain profile that has either not changed over the decade since the Internet became popular, or has improved over time. The Internet dangerously unfetters girls' spaces and risks changing our image of what girls can do, and where they can go. This challenges the social order. Girls' masterful use of the Internet also challenges the view that technology is dangerous and an inappropriate interest for girls, and in this sense the moral panic around girls online is a way of policing the relationship between girls and technology

Evaluating records for free text content

    Get PDF
The PREP team is interested in electronic health records. This project aims to make data in records more usable for researchers. We work on electronic health records with a particular focus on free text (unstructured data) that is not directly amenable to statistical analysis. Our aim is to develop strategies for making available, for research and audit purpose, medical information that is “concealed” from researchers in the free text notes, using primary care electronic patient record (EPR) as an example

Why don't we understand the public health impact of developing STI services in primary care?

Sohal et al have attempted to evaluate the public health and economic impact of incentivized primary care services on STI diagnoses across a population. In doing so, they have illustrated the difficulties in obtaining information that bedevil the planning of sexual health services in the UK(1;2), and elsewhere(3)

The Treuhandanstalt, privatization and the role of the courts

    Get PDF
The paper considers how the Treuhandanstalt's legal identity as both a publicand private entity helps to explain the process of privatization or creation of property by the state after 1989. I argue the agency did not easily fit within the rigid categories of the German legal system. Moreover, its hybrid status limitedthe degree to which individuals or groups could make use of the courts to holdthe agency accountable. As neither a fully public nor fully private entity, the agency's status successfully circumvented a number of traditional forms ofcontrol that exist in both public and private agencies in Germany. As a result, privatization was defined in a very narrow neo-liberal sense despite what one would predict from the standard accounts of the German Model.

Chunking clinical text containing non-canonical language

    Get PDF
Free text notes typed by primary care physicians during patient consultations typically contain highly non-canonical language. Shallow syntactic analysis of free text notes can help to reveal valuable information for the study of disease and treatment. We present an exploratory study into chunking such text using off-the-shelf language processing tools and pre-trained statistical models. We evaluate chunking accuracy with respect to part-of-speech tagging quality, choice of chunk representation, and breadth of context features. Our results indicate that narrow context feature windows give the best results, but that chunk representation and minor differences in tagging quality do not have a significant impact on chunking accuracy
