Slender naiad (Najas flexilis) habitat quality assessment
N. flexilis is a rare aquatic plant species of European
conservation importance. The species is believed to
be under increasing threat in its Scottish stronghold.
However, the factors that affect the health of N. flexilis
populations in Scotland are not fully understood, such
as why does the species disappear, and where and why
it fares well in some sites. In addition, more needs to be
known about what actions can be taken to ensure that
the habitat quality needed to support populations of N.
flexilis is either maintained or restored. This report highlights that much of the sensitivity of N. flexilis to the known threats of eutrophication, competition with other plants and the mild acidification of circumneutral lakes can be related to its physiology as an obligate user of CO2; N. flexilis plants being unable to metabolise bicarbonate for photosynthesis
Comparison between an integral and algebraic formulation for the eddy diffusivity using the Copenhagen experimental dataset
In this work an algebraic formulation to evaluate the eddy diffusivities in the Convective Boundary Layer (CBL) is derived. The expression depends on the turbulence properties (z height dependence) and the distance from the source. It is based on the turbulent kinetic energy spectra and Taylor’s statistical diffusion theory. It has been tested and compared through an experimental dataset, with
another complex integral formulation taken from the literature. The Agreement between the complex integral formulation and simple algebraic expression points out that this new parameterization is valid and can be used as a surrogate for eddy diffusivities in the inhomogeneous convective turbulence present in the CBL. The validation shows that the proposed algebraic vertical eddy diffusivity is suitable for application in advanced air quality regulatory models
Detection and characterisation of an Endogenous Betaretrovirus in Australian Wild Deer
Endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) are the remnants of past retroviral infections that once invaded the host’s germline and were vertically transmitted. ERV sequences have been reported in mammals, but their distribution and diversity in cervids are unclear. Using next-generation sequencing, we identified a nearly complete genome of an endogenous betaretrovirus in fallow deer (Dama dama). Further genomic analysis showed that this provirus, tentatively named cervid endogenous betaretrovirus 1 (CERV β1), has typical betaretroviral genome features (gag-pro-pol-env) and the betaretrovirus-specific dUTPase domain. In addition, CERV β1 pol sequences were detected by PCR in the six non-native deer species with wild populations in Australia. Phylogenetic analyses demonstrated that CERV β1 sequences from subfamily Cervinae clustered as sister taxa to ERV-like sequences in species of subfamily Muntiacinae. These findings, therefore, suggest that CERV β1 endogenisation occurred after the split of these two subfamilies (between 3.3 and 5 million years ago). Our results provide important insights into the evolution of betaretroviruses in cervids
Androgens and low density lipoprotein-cholesterol interplay in modulating prostate cancer cell fate and metabolism
Background: Androgens, the known drivers of prostate cancer (PCa), have been indicated as important metabolic regulators with a relevant role in stimulating lipid metabolism. Also, the relationship between obesity and the aggressiveness of PCa has been established. However, it is unknown if the androgenic hormonal environment may alter the response of PCa cells to lipid availability. Purpose: The present study evaluated the effect of 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in regulating lipid metabolism, and the interplay between this hormone and low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol in modulating PCa cells fate.Methods: Non-neoplastic and neoplastic PCa cells were treated with 10 nM DHT, and the expression of fatty acids transporter, fatty acid synthase (FASN), and carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1A (CPT1A) evaluated. PCa cells were also exposed to LDL (100 mu g/ml) in the presence or absence of DHT.Results: Treatment with DHT upregulated the expression of FASN and CPT1A in androgen-sensitive PCa cells. In contrast, LDL supplementation suppressed FASN expression regardless of the presence of DHT, whereas aug-menting CPT1A levels. Our results also showed that LDL-cholesterol increased PCa cells viability, proliferation, and migration dependently on the presence of DHT. Moreover, LDL and DHT synergistically enhanced the accumulation of lipid droplets in PCa cells.Conclusions: The obtained results show that androgens deregulate lipid metabolism and enhance the effects of LDL increasing PCa cells viability, proliferation and migration. The present findings support clinical data linking obesity with PCa and first implicate androgens in this relationship. Also, they sustain the application of phar-macological approaches targeting cholesterol availability and androgens signaling simultaneously.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Different proportion of root cutting and shoot pruning influence the growth of citronella plants
Environment concern, sustainable products demand, and natural components
conscious are currently global movement factors. Related to the global movement factors,
citronella grass (Cymbopogon nardus L.) is being widely used in folk medicine, and has insect
repellent activity, fungal and bactericidal action. Its essential oil has high content of citronellal,
citronellol, geraniol. The essential oil is mostly extracted from leaves which turns this plant with
high commercial demand. However, to obtain the best therapeutic quality and productivity of
medicinal plants, which culminates in greater quantity and quality of the active compounds, the
proper management of the crop is fundamental, as several factors can interfere during its growth
and development. Thus, we analyzed the growth of citronella plants submitted to different levels
of shoot and root cuts. Five different proportions of root pruning (0, 25, 50, 75, 100%), after 145
days of seedling planting and four cuttings in the shoots: blunt; a cut at 145 DAP (days after
planting) along with the root cut; a cut at 228 DAP; and cuts at 145 and 228 DAP (two cuts). Four
harvesting for dry matter accumulation and photoassimilate partition data were performed. The
treatment with 100% root cut, but without leaf cut, increased the total dry mass accumulation of
the plant in relation to the other treatments, for the last analysis period, demonstrating a recovery.
Thus, the application of two leaf cuts or no leaf cutting within the 100% root cut treatment for
leaf dry mass accumulation is more effective when compared to the blunt root treatment
Radiative decays of light vector mesons in a quark level linear sigma model
We calculate the P0 to gamma gamma, V0 to P0 gamma and V0to V'0 gamma gamma
decays in the framework of a U(3)xU(3) linear sigma model which includes
constituent quarks. For the first two decays this approach improves results
based on the anomalous Wess-Zumino term, with contributions due to SU(3)
symmetry breaking and vector mixing. The phi to (omega,rho) gamma gamma decays
are dominated by resonant eta' exchange . Our calculation for the later decays
improves and update similar calculations in the -closely related- framework of
vector meson dominance. We obtain BR(phi to rho gamma gamma)=2.5x10^{-5} and
BR(phi to omega gamma gamma)=2.8x10^{-6} within the scope of the

The liquid-vapor interface of an ionic fluid
We investigate the liquid-vapor interface of the restricted primitive model
(RPM) for an ionic fluid using a density-functional approximation based on
correlation functions of the homogeneous fluid as obtained from the
mean-spherical approximation (MSA). In the limit of a homogeneous fluid our
approach yields the well-known MSA (energy) equation of state. The ionic
interfacial density profiles, which for the RPM are identical for both species,
have a shape similar to those of simple atomic fluids in that the decay towards
the bulk values is more rapid on the vapor side than on the liquid side. This
is the opposite asymmetry of the decay to that found in earlier calculations
for the RPM based on a square-gradient theory. The width of the interface is,
for a wide range of temperatures, approximately four times the second moment
correlation length of the liquid phase. We discuss the magnitude and
temperature dependence of the surface tension, and argue that for temperatures
near the triple point the ratio of the dimensionless surface tension and
critical temperature is much smaller for the RPM than for simple atomic fluids.Comment: 6 postscript figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Regional differences of testicular artery blood flow in post pubertal and pre-pubertal dogs
Background
Measurement of testicular artery blood flow is used in several species to evaluate reproductive function and testicular and scrotal pathology. In dogs there are inconsistent reports about normal flow in post-pubertal dogs and no information concerning pre-pubertal dogs. The aim of this study was to describe regional differences in testicular artery blood flow in clinically normal post-pubertal and pre-pubertal dogs with no history of reproductive tract disease.
Results
The post-pubertal dogs produced normal ejaculates throughout the study. In all dogs the three different regions of the artery were imaged and monophasic flow with an obvious systolic peak and flow throughout diastole was observed on every occasion. The highest peak systolic velocity (PSV) and end diastolic velocity (EDV) were measured within the distal supra-testicular artery and marginal artery whilst the lowest PSV and EDV were measured within the intra-testicular arteries. Flow measurements were not different between left and right testes and were consistent between dogs on different examination days. Calculated resistance index (RI) and pulsatility index (PI) were lowest in the intra-testicular arteries.
The pre-pubertal dogs had significantly smaller testes than the post-pubertal dogs (p < 0.05) and were unable to ejaculate during the study. The three different artery regions were imaged at every examination time point, and flow profiles had a similar appearance to those of the post-pubertal dogs. PSV, EDV, RI and PI showed a similar trend to the post-pubertal dogs in that values were lowest in the intra-testicular arteries. Notably, values of PSV, EDV, RI and PI were significantly lower (p < 0.05) in pre-pubertal dogs compared with post-pubertal dogs.
Conclusions
This study demonstrated important regional and pubertal differences in testicular artery blood flow of dogs, and form the basis for establishing baseline reference values that may be employed for the purposes of clinical diagnosis
