    Cosmological parameter estimation with large scale structure and supernovae data

    Most cosmological parameter estimations are based on the same set of observations and are therefore not independent. Here, we test the consistency of parameter estimations using a combination of large-scale structure and supernovae data, without cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. We combine observations from the IRAS 1.2 Jy and Las Campanas redshift surveys, galaxy peculiar velocities and measurements of type Ia supernovae to obtain h=0.57_{-0.14}^{+0.15}, Omega_m=0.28+/-0.05 and sigma_8=0.87_{-0.05}^{+0.04} in agreement with the constraints from observations of the CMB anisotropies by the WMAP satellite. We also compare results from different subsets of data in order to investigate the effect of priors and residual errors in the data.     The CMB power spectrum out to l=1400 measured by the VSA

    We have observed the cosmic microwave background (CMB) in three regions of sky using the Very Small Array (VSA) in an extended configuration with antennas of beamwidth 2 degrees at 34 GHz. Combined with data from previous VSA observations using a more compact array with larger beamwidth, we measure the power spectrum of the primordial CMB anisotropies between angular multipoles l = 160 - 1400. Such measurements at high l are vital for breaking degeneracies in parameter estimation from the CMB power spectrum and other cosmological data. The power spectrum clearly resolves the first three acoustic peaks, shows the expected fall off in power at high l and starts to constrain the position and height of a fourth peak.Comment: 6 pages with 5 figures, MNRAS in press (minor corrections

    Universe Awareness (UNAWE) has over three years of experience enthusing young children with the scale and beauty of the Universe. UNAWE is an outreach programme with a strong social vision aiming at broadening children’s minds, awakening their curiosity in science and stimulating global citizenship. UNAWE uses the inspirational aspects of astronomy to instil a culture of peace and tolerance. We present the main principles of the programme, describe how it functions as a community-driven organisation and share some of the UNAWE experience. We describe projects and opportunities for IYA2009 and the future of the global programme

    One of the ways in which astronomy can stimulate development is by raising awareness of our place in the universe among the general public. This contributes to inspiring people and brings the scientific community and scientific thinking closer to everyone. The IAU OAD has set up one task force dedicated to ’Astronomy for the Public’. Proposed activities of the task force range from low-tech astronomy outreach to citizen science. We will present the task force, its objectives and potential developmental impacts for the first few years of operation

    Universe awareness for young children: some educational aspects and a pilot project

    Universe Awareness (UNAWE) is an international initiative for economically disadvantaged young children aged four to ten. UNA WE will expose children in developing countries and in underprivi leged communities in Europe to the inspirational aspects of astronomy. UNAWE is also a network of Astronomy outreach/education professionals and volunteers worldwide. Here we discuss some aspects that will be taken into account during the development phase of the program and describe the Venezuelan pilot project
