    Fast soliton scattering by delta impurities

    We study the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (nonlinear Schroedinger equation) with a repulsive delta function potential. We show that a high velocity incoming soliton is split into a transmitted component and a reflected component. The transmitted mass (L^2 norm squared) is shown to be in good agreement with the quantum transmission rate of the delta function potential. We further show that the transmitted and reflected components resolve into solitons plus dispersive radiation, and quantify the mass and phase of these solitons.Comment: 32 pages, 3 figure

    A wide field of view Cherenkov/fluorescence telescope array is one of the main components of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory project. To serve as Cherenkov and fluorescence detectors, a flexible and mobile design is adopted for easy reconfiguring of the telescope array.     Stability and symmetry-breaking bifurcation for the ground states of a NLS with a δ\delta^\prime interaction

    We determine and study the ground states of a focusing Schr\"odinger equation in dimension one with a power nonlinearity ψ2μψ|\psi|^{2\mu} \psi and a strong inhomogeneity represented by a singular point perturbation, the so-called (attractive) δ\delta^\prime interaction, located at the origin. The time-dependent problem turns out to be globally well posed in the subcritical regime, and locally well posed in the supercritical and critical regime in the appropriate energy space. The set of the (nonlinear) ground states is completely determined. For any value of the nonlinearity power, it exhibits a symmetry breaking bifurcation structure as a function of the frequency (i.e., the nonlinear eigenvalue) ω\omega. More precisely, there exists a critical value \om^* of the nonlinear eigenvalue \om, such that: if \om_0 < \om < \om^*, then there is a single ground state and it is an odd function; if \om > \om^* then there exist two non-symmetric ground states. We prove that before bifurcation (i.e., for \om < \om^*) and for any subcritical power, every ground state is orbitally stable. After bifurcation (\om =\om^*+0), ground states are stable if μ\mu does not exceed a value μ\mu^\star that lies between 2 and 2.5, and become unstable for μ>μ\mu > \mu^*. Finally, for μ>2\mu > 2 and \om \gg \om^*, all ground states are unstable. The branch of odd ground states for \om \om^*, obtaining a family of orbitally unstable stationary states. Existence of ground states is proved by variational techniques, and the stability properties of stationary states are investigated by means of the Grillakis-Shatah-Strauss framework, where some non standard techniques have to be used to establish the needed properties of linearization operators.Comment: 46 pages, 5 figure

    Twist-3 Distribute Amplitude of the Pion in QCD Sum Rules

    We apply the background field method to calculate the moments of the pion two-particles twist-3 distribution amplitude (DA) ϕp(ξ)\phi_p(\xi) in QCD sum rules. In this paper,we do not use the equation of motion for the quarks inside the pion since they are not on shell and introduce a new parameter m0pm_0^p to be determined. We get the parameter m0p1.30GeVm_0^p\approx1.30GeV in this approach. If assuming the expansion of ϕp(ξ)\phi_p(\xi) in the series in Gegenbauer polynomials Cn1/2(ξ)C_n^{1/2}(\xi), one can obtain its approximate expression which can be determined by its first few moments.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure

    Relaxation Effects in the Transition Temperature of Superconducting HgBa2CuO4+delta

    In previous studies on a number of under- and overdoped high temperature superconductors, including YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-y} and Tl_{2}Ba_{2}CuO_{6+\delta}, the transition temperature T_c has been found to change with time in a manner which depends on the sample's detailed temperature and pressure history. This relaxation behavior in T_c is believed to originate from rearrangements within the oxygen sublattice. In the present high-pressure studies on HgBa_{2}CuO_{4+\delta} to 0.8 GPa we find clear evidence for weak relaxation effects in strongly under- and overdoped samples (Tc4050KT_c\simeq 40 - 50 K) with an activation energy EA(1bar)0.80.9eVE_{A}(1 bar) \simeq 0.8 - 0.9 eV. For overdoped HgBa_{2}CuO_{4+\delta} E_{A} increases under pressure more rapidly than previously observed for YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.41}, yielding an activation volume of +11 \pm 5 cm^{3}; the dependence of T_c on pressure is markedly nonlinear, an anomalous result for high-T_c superconductors in the present pressure range, giving evidence for a change in the electronic and/or structural properties near 0.4 GPa

    The ARGO-YBJ Experiment Progresses and Future Extension

    Gamma ray source detection above 30TeV is an encouraging approach for finding galactic cosmic ray origins. All sky survey for gamma ray sources using wide field of view detector is essential for population accumulation for various types of sources above 100GeV. To target the goals, the ARGO-YBJ experiment has been established. Significant progresses have been made in the experiment. A large air shower detector array in an area of 1km2 is proposed to boost the sensitivity. Hybrid detection with multi-techniques will allow a good discrimination between different types of primary particles, including photons and protons, thus enable an energy spectrum measurement for individual specie. Fluorescence light detector array will extend the spectrum measurement above 100PeV where the second knee is located. An energy scale determined by balloon experiments at 10TeV will be propagated to ultra high energy cosmic ray experiments

    Narrow ridge waveguide high power single mode 1.3-μm InAs/InGaAs ten-layer quantum dot lasers

    Ten-layer InAs/In0.15Ga0.85As quantum dot (QD) laser structures have been grown using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on GaAs (001) substrate. Using the pulsed anodic oxidation technique, narrow (2 μm) ridge waveguide (RWG) InAs QD lasers have been fabricated. Under continuous wave operation, the InAs QD laser (2 × 2,000 μm2) delivered total output power of up to 272.6 mW at 10 °C at 1.3 μm. Under pulsed operation, where the device heating is greatly minimized, the InAs QD laser (2 × 2,000 μm2) delivered extremely high output power (both facets) of up to 1.22 W at 20 °C, at high external differential quantum efficiency of 96%. Far field pattern measurement of the 2-μm RWG InAs QD lasers showed single lateral mode operation

    Early carboniferous brachiopod faunas from the Baoshan block, west Yunnan, southwest China

    38 brachiopod species in 27 genera and subgenera are described from the Yudong Formation in the Shidian-Baoshan area, west Yunnan, southwest China. New taxa include two new subgenera: Unispirifer (Septimispirifer) and Brachythyrina (Longathyrina), and seven new species: Eomarginifera yunnanensis, Marginatia cylindrica, Unispirifer (Unispirifer) xiangshanensis, Unispirifer (Septimispirifer) wafangjieensis, Brachythyrina (Brachythyrina) transversa, Brachythyrina (Longathyrina) baoshanensis, and Girtyella wafangjieensis. Based on the described material and constraints from associated coral and conodont faunas, the age of the brachiopod fauna from the Yudon Formation is considered late Tournaisian (Early Carboniferous), with a possibility extending into earlyViseacutean.<br /
