    Prediction of periprosthetic failure may be improved by an improved model of bone elasticity which includes microstructural information. Micropolar theory facilitates such information to be included in a continuum model. We assessed the extent of bone’s micropolar behaviour in bending both numerically and experimentally. The numerical model was consistent with micropolar behaviour, and experimental results exhibited size effects that may have been confounded by surface roughness effects, as predicted numerically

    Key Factors Supporting Small-Scale Coastal Fisheries Management

    This synthesis was designed to provide an evidence base on the success factors in small-scale coastal fisheries management in developing countries and, in turn, to assist the Rockefeller Foundation in developing its strategy for its Oceans and Fisheries Initiative. In doing so, it identifies and describes some 20 key factors believed to influence success in small-scale coastal fisheries management. The report was completed via a rapid review of key sources of knowledge from formal published literature, institutional literature, key informants and Internet searches. The focus was on key success factors in achieving a balance of social, economic and ecological benefits from the management of small-scale coastal fisheries. A summary of these success factors can also be explored via an interactive visualization that accompanies this report

    Inertia emulation control of VSC-HVDC transmission system

    The increasing penetration of power electronics interfaced renewable generation (e.g. offshore wind) has been leading to a reduction in conventional synchronous-machine based generation. Most converter-interfaced energy sources do not contribute to the overall power system inertia; and therefore cannot support the system during system transients and disturbances. It is therefore desirable that voltage-source-converter (VSC) based high voltage direct current (HVDC) interfaces, which play an important role in delivery of renewable power to AC systems, could contribute a virtual inertia and provide AC grid frequency support. In this paper, an inertia emulation control (IEC) system is proposed that allows VSC-HVDC system to perform an inertial response in a similar fashion to synchronous machines (SM), by exercising the electro-static energy stored in DC shunt capacitors of the HVDC system. The proposed IEC scheme has been implemented in simulations and its performance is evaluated using Matlab/Simulink

    John McCraw was an Earth scientist who began working as a pedologist with Soil Bureau, DSIR, then became the Foundation Professor of Earth Sciences at the University of Waikato in Hamilton, inspiring a new generation to study and work in Earth sciences . In retirement, John McCraw was an author and historian with a special emphasis on Central Otago as well as the Waikato region. Throughout his career, marked especially by exemplary leadership, accomplished administration, and commitment to his staff and students at the University of Waikato, John McCraw also contributed to the communities in which he lived through public service organizations and as a public speaker. He received a number of awards including an MBE, fellowship, and companionship, and, uniquely, is commemorated also with a glacier, a fossil, and a museum-based research room named for him. Emeritus Professor John McCraw passed away on the 14th of December, 2014. An obituary, entitled “Dedicated to earth science and his students”, was published in the Waikato Times on the 10th of January, 2015

    At the end of his life, Stephen Jay Kline, longtime professor of mechanical engineering at Stanford University, completed a book on how to address complex systems. The title of the book is 'Conceptual Foundations of Multi-Disciplinary Thinking' (1995), but the topic of the book is systems. Kline first establishes certain limits that are characteristic of our conscious minds. Kline then establishes a complexity measure for systems and uses that complexity measure to develop a hierarchy of systems. Kline then argues that our minds, due to their characteristic limitations, are unable to model the complex systems in that hierarchy. Computers are of no help to us here. Our attempts at modeling these complex systems are based on the way we successfully model some simple systems, in particular, 'inert, naturally-occurring' objects and processes, such as what is the focus of physics. But complex systems overwhelm such attempts. As a result, the best we can do in working with these complex systems is to use a heuristic, what Kline calls the 'Guideline for Complex Systems.' Kline documents the problems that have developed due to 'oversimple' system models and from the inappropriate application of a system model from one domain to another. One prominent such problem is the Procrustean attempt to make the disciplines that deal with complex systems be 'physics-like.' Physics deals with simple systems, not complex ones, using Kline's complexity measure. The models that physics has developed are inappropriate for complex systems. Kline documents a number of the wasteful and dangerous fallacies of this type

    There is concern that the levels of inertia in power systems may decrease in the future, due to increased levels of energy being provided from renewable sources, which typically have little or no inertia. Voltage source converters (VSC) used in high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission applications are often deliberately controlled in order to de-couple transients to prevent propagation of instability between interconnected systems.
