    The Perception of Europeanization in Public Institutions: the Imagery of the

    This study deals with the Europeanization of institutional players after Romania's accession to the European Union. Based on a constructivist model of analysis, the study highlights the perception of European rules in three public institutions whose fields of activity are based on specific European regulations and policies. How are the "internal rules" reconstructed within the profession and the institution and how do these players build a European identity in the public space, by defining certain priorities, by outlining social critiques or "general interest" issues? How exactly do institutions problematize the application of Community regulations in their professional field and in society at large? By adopting the discourse analysis method the study shows that accession did not generate essential changes with respect to institutional construction (new practices, a different institutional "policy", etc.). The change of status - through the accession to the EU - has not always been followed by the application of strategies on how to use European regulations

    The article looks at the media representation of the diaspora in the context of the presidential elections in Romania, in 2014. In a voting situation, how are the discoursive construals of the diaspora reconfigured and how is the public problem of intra-EU migration redefined? Within the frame of a critical discourse analysis, the study examines the media representation of the diaspora and of the public from the perspective of discursive strategies specific to identity construction in the contexts of action at a distance: distance-proximity strategies and, correspondingly, inclusion/exclusion strategies, as well as the configuration of particular forms of commitment. The corpus consists predominantly of political talk shows on two television channels specialized in news broadcasting and political commentary, but different in terms of practices of mediation of the political sphere. The study shows that certain representations of migrants, which have been naturalized over the years, continue to be reproduced in the political and media sphere, but, in an electoral context, they are differently constituted, especially as regards the migrants’ agenc

    The study analyzes the influence of new media on the television sphere, namely the way in which news and talk shows integrate the forums, text messages, images captured using the mobile phone, blogs, etc. As such, the study takes into account a specific phenomenon: the broadcasters' tendency to mobilize the public to provide journalistic material and "evidence' captured using mobile technology. Therefore, how does television build the image of a so-called active public? And how are the journalist's role and the idea of journalistic source redefined in this context? By using the discourse analysis method, the study emphasizes the particularities of the show "Martor ocular" (Eyewitness) (broadcast on a major Romanian news outlet) where the public acquires multiple roles, being at the same time journalistic source, co-author of the information, witness and the citizen-who-questions-decision-makers. One of the conclusions of the study is that the use in televised shows of materials provided by viewers does not necessarily contribute to the formation of a deliberative public. "Raw" images captured by the eyewitness-viewer are integrated by the media in a rulemaking discourse on the role of the journalist and of mass-media

    This study analyzes the media construction of the role of journalists in their relationship with institutional sources and public opinion. The main research questions refer to the influence of the European argument on the way in which journalists define their "mission" and their symbolic identity in the public space. What are the generalization strategies which journalists deploy in order to legitimize their participation in the definition of the post EU-accession period as a public issue? The study uses a constructivist paradigm applied to the European issue. By using a semiotic-discursive methodology, the analysis highlights certain media practices relevant for the Europeanization of the media discourse in Romania. It demonstrates that at the time of the imminent accession to the EU, the press begins to use certain identity themes and imageries, as well as a militant and, at the same time, statutory image of the journalist

    The 2014 presidential election campaign in Romania stood out, among other things, through an intense media debate about the organization and the unfolding of televised election debates. In the present study, we investigate the ways in which televisions have constructed the public impact of the 2014 election debates (the debate as media event) as well as the meanings attached to them in connection with the public interest (the debate as public problem). By employing, within this frame, the semiotic-discursive method and categories from discourse analysis, the research demonstrates a process of “privatization” of election debates. Both the candidates and the media approached the election debate as competitive actors in the election and the journalistic fields. Thus, the candidates used the debate a resource for legitimasing themselves and delegitimising their opponents. Journalists, in their turn, associated the staging of the election debate with the competitive status of their TV channel in the journalistic field (the credibility of the channel, the journalists’ competence and experience etc.).     Discourse Representations of Migrants in Political Talk-Shows in Romania

    In this study, we analyse the way in which talk-shows in Romania build upon intra-EU migration as a public issue. According to one of the research hypotheses, the topic of new migration is strategically used in the public environment, determining the taking of positions, agendas and forms of institutionalisation. The semiotic and discourse analysis of a corpus of political talk-shows broadcast in the period 2010-2011 by Romanian TV stations specialising in news and socio-political debates highlights discourse strategies that are relevant for the media construction of public issues in talk-shows. The article shows that in talks-shows migrants are represented "globally", from the perspective of categories of persons that can contribute to a competitive national image. Migrants become visible through their performances in the host country and, as a result, the moral distance from them becomes apparent through a politics of visibility (hence the visibility of mythical migration, of high-performance migration, etc.). Talk-shows do not present the issue of the Diaspora experience, namely of the position of migrants with respect to forms of otherness, cooperation or solidarity

    The Diaspora and the Transnational Experience. Media Coverage Practices in the Romanian Media

    The study analyses the media coverage practices concerning the “new diaspora”– the migration of the Romanian workforce in the countries of the European Union. Themain research question relates to how the media builds the image of the migrant, aswell as of the emerging forms in which the diaspora presents itself: is the diaspora a“distant” phenomenon (eventually recovered within a policy-media agenda) or, on thecontrary, does the press propose varied and nuanced images of the migrant condition,approaching this theme as a public issue? In other words, what forms of “moraldistance” does the media build with respect to the Romanians who work abroad? Byapplying content analysis combined with discourse analysis with respect to two nationaldaily newspapers, the study shows that the press “defines” the diaspora as an abstractreality, in a sketchy presentation of idealized characters vs. negative characters. Assuch, the media establishes an imagery of compassion and benevolent attention – anexterior reality of the national public. The media discourse does not point out theparticularities of the diasporic experience in the context of the various types of mobility
