Maximal acceleration or maximal accelerations?
We review the arguments supporting the existence of a maximal acceleration
for a massive particle and show that different values of this upper limit can
be predicted in different physical situations.Comment: 13 pages, Latex, to be published in Int. J. Mod. Phys.
Experimental observation of a complex periodic window
The existence of a special periodic window in the two-dimensional parameter
space of an experimental Chua's circuit is reported. One of the main reasons
that makes such a window special is that the observation of one implies that
other similar periodic windows must exist for other parameter values. However,
such a window has never been experimentally observed, since its size in
parameter space decreases exponentially with the period of the periodic
attractor. This property imposes clear limitations for its experimental
detection.Comment: 4.2 pages, 4 figure
Pion dispersion relation at finite density and temperature
We study the behavior of the pion dispersion relation in a pion medium at
finite density and temperature. We introduce a pion chemical potential to
describe the finite pion number density and argue that such description is
valid during the hadronic phase of a relativistic heavy-ion collision between
chemical and thermal freeze-out. We make use of an effective Lagrangian that
explicitly respects chiral symmetry through the enforcement of the chiral Ward
identities. The pion dispersion relation is computed through the computation of
the pion self-energy in a non-perturbative fashion by giving an approximate
solution to the Schwinger-Dyson equation for this self-energy. The dispersion
relation is described in terms of a density and temperature dependent mass and
an index of refraction which is also temperature, density as well as momentum
dependent. The index of refraction is larger than unity for all values of the
momentum for finite and . We conclude by exploring some of the
possible consequences for the propagation of pions through the boundary between
the medium and vacuum.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, 3 new references, published versio
DNA polymerase B deficiency is linked to aggressive breast cancer: a comprehensive analysis of gene copy number, mRNA and protein expression in multiple cohorts
Short arm of chromosome 8 is a hot spot for chromosomal breaks, losses and amplifications in breast cancer. Although such genetic changes may have phenotypic consequences, the identity of candidate gene(s) remains to be clearly defined. Pol β gene is localized to chromosome 8p12 - p11 and encodes a key DNA base excision repair protein. Pol β may be a tumour suppressor and involved in breast cancer pathogenesis. We conducted the first and the largest study to comprehensively evaluate pol β in breast cancer. We investigated pol β gene copy number changes in two cohorts (n=128 & n=1952), pol β mRNA expression in two cohorts (n=249 & n=1952) and pol β protein expression in two cohorts (n=1406 & n=252). Artificial neural network analysis for pol β interacting genes was performed in 249 tumours. For mechanistic insights, pol β gene copy number changes, mRNA and protein levels were investigated together in 1 28 tumours and validated in 1952 tumours. Low pol β mRNA expression as well as low pol β protein expression was associated high grade, lymph node positivity, pleomorphism, triple negative, basal - like phenotypes and poor survival (ps<0.001). In oestrogen receptor (ER) positive sub - group that received tamoxifen, low pol β protein remains associated with aggressive phenotype and poor survival (ps<0.001). Artificial neural network analysis revealed ER as a top pol β interacting gene. Mechanistically, there was strong positive correlation between pol β gene copy number changes and pol β mRNA expression (p<0.0000001) and between pol β mRNA and pol β protein expression (p<0.0000001). This is the first study to provide evidence that pol β deficiency is linked to aggressive breast cancer and may have prognostic and predictive significance in patients
Dithiocarbamate residues in fruits and leaves of passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) from different brazilian regions.
Dithiocarbamates are widely used fungicides, including in passion fruit, whose fruits are mainly used for juice production, the leaves for the preparation of herbal tea and medicines. Also, the use of the peel in the food industry has been proposed. In this study, the spectrophotometric method for determination of dithiocarbamate residues, as CS2, in passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) was validated at a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.05 mg kg-1 CS2, and 108 samples (55 fruits and 53 leaves) collected from Brazilian growers were analyzed. About 25% of the fruit peel samples were positive (0.06 to 1.4 mg kg-1) and only one sample had residues in the pulp (0.09 mg kg-1), 43.4% of leaf samples contained residues. Washing of fruit reduced the residues in the peel by up to 100%, and drying the leaves increased residue levels by up to 60%. This is the first study that reports dithiocarbamate residues in passion fruit in Brazil, and the results are important for government authorities when planning monitoring programs, and for food and herbal medicine industries
