The conflict resolution in connected railway junctions
Purpose of study: Traffic conflicts occur when trains on different routes approach a converging junction in a railway network at the same time. To prevent collisions, a right-of-way assignment is needed to control the order in which the trains should pass the junction. Such control action inevitably requires the braking and/or stopping of trains, which lengthens their travelling times and leads to delays. Train delays cause a loss of punctuality and hence directly affect the quality of service. It is therefore important to minimise the delays by devising a suitable right-of-way assignment. One of the major difficulties in attaining the optimal right-of-way assignment is that the number of feasible assignments increases dramatically with the number of trains. Connected-junctions further complicate the problem. Exhaustive search for the optimal solution is time-consuming and infeasible for area control (multi-junction). Even with the more intelligent deterministic optimisation method revealed in [1], the computation demand is still considerable, which hinders real-time control. In practice, as suggested in [2], the optimality may be traded off by shorter computation time, and heuristic searches provide alternatives for this optimisation problem
The Design of the MT Psalter: A Macrostructural Analysis
The seminal question at the forefront of Masoretic (MT)-150 Psalter research is a
question of the literary arrangement of the 150 psalms. An overarching compositional
logic of the MT-150, if any, is in the sequence design of the psalms. Unfortunately,
macrostructural studies of the entire Psalter are few, with no major consensus to
understanding its structuring techniques, shape and logic. From my consolidation of at
least 30 different tacit and formal macrostructuring techniques that can be detected in
the MT-150, important macrostructuring techniques include the use of superscriptions;
the programmatic nature of Pss 1–2; placement of acrostic/alphabetical compositions;
numerical devices and the five Davidic Collections. A previously unknown scribal
technique that places certain lexemes sequentially and exhaustively across the Psalter
to express a message is also uncovered. Based on these organizational principles, the
Psalter can be read palindromically, linearly, intertextually and even numerically. The
MT-150 is structured into three major Sections (Books I, II–III, IV–V), each further
divided into four Groups, and characterized by four recurring Central Motifs: (a)
YHWH’s kingship; (b) Davidic kingship; (c) Zion-temple and (d) Supplication of a
Davidic figure. The logic of the MT-150 is a reception of the Davidic covenant. Book I
traces the establishments of both the Davidic kingship and Zion. Books II–III,
however, depict their fall and brokenness. Books IV–V highlight the re-establishments
of an ideal Davidic kingship and ideal Zion. As a whole, the MT-150 has a messianic
thrust with an exhortation for its readers to persevere in prayer and hope in view of
YHWH’s covenantal promises. Striking correspondences between techniques, form,
content and logic help to validate the proposed design of the MT-150. This thesis will
contribute significantly to the understanding of the arrangement of the Hebrew Psalter

This paper presents a novel mesh-update technique for unsteady free-surface
Newtonian flows using spectral element method and relying on the arbitrary
Lagrangian--Eulerian kinematic description for moving the grid. Selected
results showing compatibility of this mesh-update technique with spectral
element method are given
Energetic Particle Responses to Interplanetary Shocks Observed by ACE
At very strong shock passages, protons (and other ions) may be accelerated at or near a spacecraft resulting in substantial particle intensities increases. Such events may be a significant space weather hazard, yet we are still unable to accurately forecast their arrival time or the magnitude of the particle increase. Here, we classify the >10 MeV proton response (observed by ACE/SIS) to passing shocks (identified by ACE/MAG, ACE/SWEPAM, SOHO/PM), examine heavy ion properties, and relate them to the measured shock parameters in an effort to further our understanding of these events and our ability to predict them
The in vivo Therapeutic Effect of Free Wanderer Powder (逍 遙 散 xiāo yáo sǎn, Xiaoyaosan) on Mice with 4T1 Cell Induced Breast Cancer Model
ABSTRACTIn the present study, we investigated the therapeutic effect of a classical TCM formula, Free Wanderer Powder (逍遙散 xiāo yáo sǎn), in a breast cancer mouse model induced with estrogen-insensitive breast cancer 4T1 cells. Ovariectomized Balb/c mice (6-8 weeks) or sham mice were injected into the fourth mammary fat pad with 4T1 cells in which tumors were palpable 7days after injection. On the eighth day, the mice were divided into 4 groups and tubefed daily with vehicle, Free Wanderer Powder (逍遙散 xiāo yáo sǎn) formula or tamoxifen for 28days. Tumor growth inhibition and the decrease of the average tumor mass were most evident in mice treated with Free Wanderer Powder (逍遙散 xiāo yáo sǎn). Free Wanderer Powder (逍遙散 xiāo yáo sǎn) treatment significantly reduced Bcl-2 and elevated Bax and p53 protein expressions in breast cancer tumor. These results were further confirmed by immunohistochemisty. Tamoxifen could decrease spleen mass and Bcl-2 protein expression, increase the Bax protein expression as well as exert uterotrophic effects by increasing uterus index and inducing the gene expressions in the uterus. Taken together, these results show that Free Wanderer Powder (逍遙散 xiāo yáo sǎn) treatment induced apoptosis at protein level and inhibited the tumor growth in 4T1-induced ovariectomized Balb/c female mice, indicating the possibility of its future use for treatment of estrogen-insensitive breast caner
Ionizing radiation absorption of vascular surgeons during endovascular procedures
ObjectiveEndovascular procedures have become an integral part of a vascular surgeon’s practice. The exposure of surgeons to ionizing radiation and other safety issues have not been well studied. We investigated the radiation exposure of a team of vascular surgeons in an active endovascular unit and compared yearly dosages absorbed by various body parts among different surgeons. Patients’ radiation exposure was also assessed.MethodsThe radiation absorption of a team of vascular surgeons was prospectively monitored in a 12-month period. During each endovascular procedure, the effective body, eye, and hand radiation doses of all participating surgeons were measured by mini-thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLD) attached at the chest level under a lead apron, at the forehead at eye level, and at the hand. The type of procedure, fluoroscopy machine, fluoroscopy time, and personal and operating theatre radiation protection devices used in each procedure were also recorded. One TLD was attached to the patient’s body near the operative site to measure the patient’s dose. The yearly effective body, eye, and hand dose were compared with the safety limits of radiation for occupational exposure recommended by the International Commission on Radiation Protection (ICRP). The radiation absorption of various body parts per minute of fluoroscopy was compared among different surgeons.ResultsA total of 149 consecutive endovascular procedures were performed, including 30 endovascular aortic repairs (EVAR), 58 arteriograms with and without embolization (AGM), and 61 percutaneous transluminal angioplasty and stent (PTA/S) procedures. The cumulative fluoroscopy time was 1132 minutes. The median yearly effective body, eye, and hand dose for the surgeons were 0.20 mSv (range, 0.13 to 0.27 mSv), 0.19 mSv (range, 0.10 to 0.33 mSv) and 0.99 mSv (0.29 to 1.84 mSv) respectively, which were well below the safety limits of the ICRP. The mean body, eye, and hand dose of the chief surgeon per procedure were highest for EVAR. A significant discrepancy was observed for the average hand dose per minute of fluoroscopy among different surgeons. The mean radiation absorption of patients who underwent EVAR, AGM, and PTA/S was 12.7 mSv, 13.6 mSv, and 3.4 mSv, respectively.ConclusionWith current radiation protection practice, the radiation absorbed by vascular surgeons with a high endovascular workload did not exceed the safety limits recommended by ICRP. Variations in practice, however, can result in significant discrepancy of radiation absorption between surgeons
Trajectory of functional outcome and health status after moderate-to-major trauma in Hong Kong: A prospective 5 year cohort study
Background
Trauma care systems in Asia have been developing in recent years, but there has been little long-term outcome data from injured survivors. This study aims to evaluate the trajectory of functional outcome and health status up to five years after moderate to major trauma in Hong Kong.
Methods
We report the five year follow up results of a multicentre, prospective cohort from the trauma registries of three regional trauma centres in Hong Kong. The original cohort recruited 400 adult trauma patients with ISS ≥ 9. Telephone follow up was conducted longitudinally at seven time points, and the extended Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOSE) and Short-Form 36 (SF36) were tracked.
Results
119 out of 309 surviving patients (39%) completed follow up after 5 years. The trajectory of GOSE, PCS and MCS showed gradual improvements over the seven time points. 56/119 (47.1%) patients reported a GOSE = 8 (upper good recovery), and the mean PCS and MCS was 47.8 (95% CI 45.8, 49.9) and 55.8 (95% CI 54.1, 57.5) respectively at five years. Univariate logistic regression showed change in PCS - baseline to 1 year and 1 year to 2 years, and change in MCS - baseline to 1 year were associated with GOSE = 8 at 5 years. Linear mixed effects model showed differences in PCS and MCS were greatest between 1-month and 6-month follow up.
Conclusions
After injury, the most rapid improvement in PCS and MCS occurred in the first six to 12 months, but further recovery was still evident for MCS in patients aged under 65 years for up to five years
A Proof of the Generalized Second Law for Two-Dimensional Black Holes
We investigate the generalized second law for two-dimensional black holes in
equilibrium (Hartle-Hawking) and nonequilibrium (Unruh) with the heat bath
surrounding the black holes. We obtain a simple expression for the change of
total entropy in terms of covariant thermodynamic variables, which is valid not
only for the Hartle-Hawking state but also for the Unruh state up to leading
order, without assuming a quasi-stationary evolution of the black holes. Using
this expression, it is shown that the rate of local entropy production is

Electromigration-Induced Flow of Islands and Voids on the Cu(001) Surface
Electromigration-induced flow of islands and voids on the Cu(001) surface is
studied at the atomic scale. The basic drift mechanisms are identified using a
complete set of energy barriers for adatom hopping on the Cu(001) surface,
combined with kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. The energy barriers are
calculated by the embedded atom method, and parameterized using a simple model.
The dependence of the flow on the temperature, the size of the clusters, and
the strength of the applied field is obtained. For both islands and voids it is
found that edge diffusion is the dominant mass-transport mechanism. The rate
limiting steps are identified. For both islands and voids they involve
detachment of atoms from corners into the adjacent edge. The energy barriers
for these moves are found to be in good agreement with the activation energy
for island/void drift obtained from Arrhenius analysis of the simulation
results. The relevance of the results to other FCC(001) metal surfaces and
