Toroidal mode number estimation of the edge-localized modes using the KSTAR 3-D electron cyclotron emission imaging system
A new and more accurate technique is presented for determining the toroidal mode number n of edge-localized modes (ELMs) using two independent electron cyclotron emission imaging (ECEI) systems in the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) device. The technique involves the measurement of the poloidal spacing between adjacent ELM filaments, and of the pitch angle ?? O of filaments at the plasma outboard midplane. Equilibrium reconstruction verifies that ?? O is nearly constant and thus well-defined at the midplane edge. Estimates of n obtained using two ECEI systems agree well with n measured by the conventional technique employing an array of Mirnov coils.open3

A Collective Scattering System for Measuring Electron Gyroscale Fluctuations on the National Spherical Torus Experiment
A collective scattering system has been installed on the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) to measure electron gyroscale fluctuations in NSTX plasmas. Up to five distinct wavenumbers are measured simultaneously, and the large toroidal curvature of NSTX plasmas provides enhanced spatial localization. Steerable optics can position the scattering volume throughout the plasma from the magnetic axis to the outboard edge. Initial measurements indicate rich turbulent dynamics on the electron gyroscale. The system will be a valuable tool for investigating the connection between electron temperature gradient turbulence and electron thermal transport in NSTX plasmas
Boundary perturbations coupled to core 3/2 tearing modes on the DIII-D tokamak
High confinement (H-mode) discharges on the DIII-D tokamak are routinely subject to the formation of long-lived, non-disruptive magnetic islands that degrade confinement and limit fusion performance. Simultaneous, 2D measurement of electron temperature fluctuations in the core and edge regions allows for reconstruction of the radially resolved poloidal mode number spectrum and phase of the global plasma response associated with these modes. Coherent, n = 2 excursions of the plasma boundary are found to be the result of coupling to an n = 2, kink-like mode which arises locked in phase to the 3/2 island chain. This coupling dictates the relative phase of the displacement at the boundary with respect to the tearing mode. This unambiguous phase relationship, for which no counter-examples are observed, is presented as a test for modeling of the perturbed fields to be expected outside the confined plasma
Electron cyclotron emission imaging diagnostic on TEXTOR
A 16-channel electron cyclotron emission imaging diagnostic system, developed by UC Davis in collaboration with the FOM-Instituut voor Plasmafysica Rijnhuizen, has been installed on the Torus Experiment for Technology Oriented Research tokamak. The system is designed to collect multichannel electron temperature profile and fluctuation data along a vertical chord of constant magnetic field, by collecting second harmonic X-mode emission. Technical details of the system are presented together with preliminary experimental data. (C) 2001 American Institute of Physics
