Benedictijnen in Groningen:Een geofysische verkenning naar de ruimtelijke indeling van het voormalige klooster in Thesinge

The desolate and far-stretching emptiness of the most northern part of the Netherlands, Groningen, provided an excellent place for monastery settlements during the Middle Ages. One of these monasteries stood in Thesinge, a small village nearby Groningen. Partly destroyed during the Reduction in 1594, it is still one of the few remains of the rich religious life in Groningen. However, most part of the fundaments of the lowered monastery church and the surrounding structures are still to be found beneath the ground.What was the layout of monastery’s buildings? And to what extent can it be classified as Benedictine? Margreet Wieske wrote her Bachelor thesis on this subject. With geophysical measurements of 2500 square meters, Wieske visualised parts of the monastery and her surrounding walls. With this data, combined with historical and former archaeological research, we find that the monastery in Thesinge had many local influences, something we find often within Benedictine order. Wieske's research shows the richness of low-key citizen science archaeology, and offers room for further exploration of the subject
