Crystallization and preliminary X-ray diffraction analysis of PAT, an acetyltransferase from Sulfolobus solfataricus
PAT is an acetyltransferase from the archaeon Sulfolobus solfataricus that specifically acetylates the chromatin protein Alba. The enzyme was expressed, purified and subsequently crystallized using the sitting-drop vapour-diffusion technique. Native diffraction data were collected to 1.70 angstrom resolution on the BL13C1 beamline of NSRRC from a flash-frozen crystal at 100 K. The crystals belonged to space group P2(1)2(1)2(1), with unit-cell parameters a = 44.30, b = 46.59, c = 68.39 angstrom
Study of heterogeneous nucleation of eutectic Si in high-purity Al-Si alloys with Sr addition
The official published version can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2010 The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM InternationalAl-5 wt pct Si master-alloys with controlled Sr and/or P addition/s were produced using super purity Al 99.99 wt pct and Si 99.999 wt pct materials in an arc melter. The master-alloy was melt-spun resulting in the production of thin ribbons. The Al matrix of the ribbons contained entrained Al-Si eutectic droplets that were subsequently investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry, thermodynamic calculations, and transmission electron microscopy techniques were employed to examine the effect of the Sr and P additions on eutectic undercoolings and nucleation phenomenon. Results indicate that, unlike P, Sr does not promote nucleation. Increasing Sr additions depressed the eutectic nucleation temperature. This may be a result of the formation of a Sr phase that could consume or detrimentally affect potent AlP nucleation sites. This work is financially supported by the

Aquabacterium limnoticum sp nov., isolated from a freshwater spring
A Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, short-rod-shaped, non-motile and non-spore-forming bacterial strain, designated ABP-4(T), was isolated from a freshwater spring in Taiwan and was characterized using the polyphasic taxonomy approach. Growth occurred at 20-40 degrees C (optimum, 30-37 degrees C), at pH 7.0-10.0 (optimum, pH 7.0-9.0) and with 0-3 % NaCl (optimum, 0 %). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain ABP-4(T), together with Aquabacterium fontiphilum CS-6(T) (96.4 % sequence similarity), Aquabacterium commune B8(T) (96.1 %), Aquabacterium citratiphilum B4(T) (95.5 %) and Aquabacterium parvum B6(T) (94.7 %), formed a deep line within the order Burkholderiales. Strain ABP-4(T) contained summed feature 3 (comprising C-16:1 omega 7c and/or C-16:1 omega 6c), C-18:1 omega 7c and C-16:0 as predominant fatty acids. The major cellular hydroxy fatty acid was C-10:0 3-OH. The major isoprenoid quinone was Q-8 and the DNA G+C content was 68.6 mol%. The polar lipid profile consisted of a mixture of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylserine, diphosphatidylglycerol and several uncharacterized phospholipids. The DNA-DNA relatedness of strain ABP-4(T) with respect to recognized species of the genus Aquabacterium was less than 70 %. On the basis of the genotypic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic data, strain ABP-4(T) represents a novel species in the genus Aquabacterium, for which the name Aquabacterium limnoticum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is ABP-4(T) (=BCRC 80167(T)=KCTC 23306(T))
Basis Functions for Linear-Scaling First-Principles Calculations
In the framework of a recently reported linear-scaling method for
density-functional-pseudopotential calculations, we investigate the use of
localized basis functions for such work. We propose a basis set in which each
local orbital is represented in terms of an array of `blip functions'' on the
points of a grid. We analyze the relation between blip-function basis sets and
the plane-wave basis used in standard pseudopotential methods, derive criteria
for the approximate equivalence of the two, and describe practical tests of
these criteria. Techniques are presented for using blip-function basis sets in
linear-scaling calculations, and numerical tests of these techniques are
reported for Si crystal using both local and non-local pseudopotentials. We
find rapid convergence of the total energy to the values given by standard
plane-wave calculations as the radius of the linear-scaling localized orbitals
is increased.Comment: revtex file, with two encapsulated postscript figures, uses epsf.sty,

Search for \bar{B}^0\to\Lambda_c^+\bar{\Lambda}_c^- decay at Belle
We search for the doubly charmed baryonic decay
, in a data sample of
events accumulated at the resonance with the Belle
detector at the KEKB asymmetric e^+e^- collider. We find no significant signal
and set an upper limit of at 90%
confidence level. The result is significantly below a naive extrapolation from
assuming a simple Cabibbo-suppression
factor of . The small branching fraction could be attributed
to a suppression due to the large momentum of the baryonic decay products,
which has been observed in other charmed baryonic two-body B decays. trend

Search for B -> h(*) nu nubar Decays at Belle
We present a search for the rare decays B -> h(*) nu nubar, where h(*) stands
for a light meson. A data sample of 535 million BBbar pairs collected with the
Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- collider is used. Signal candidates are
required to have an accompanying B meson fully reconstructed in a hadronic mode
and signal-side particles consistent with a single h(*) meson. No significant
signal is observed and we set upper limits on the branching fractions at 90%
confidence level. The limits on B0 -> K*0 nu nubar and B+ -> K+ nu nubar decays
are more stringent than the previous constraints, while the first searches for
B0 -> K0 nu nubar, pi0 nu nubar, rho0 nu nubar, phi nu nubar and B+ -> K*+ nu
nubar, rho+ nu nubar are reported.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, submit to PR
jFuzzyLogic: a Java Library to Design Fuzzy Logic Controllers According to the Standard for Fuzzy Control Programming
Fuzzy Logic Controllers are a specific model of Fuzzy Rule Based Systems suitable for engineering
applications for which classic control strategies do not achieve good results or for when it is too difficult
to obtain a mathematical model. Recently, the International Electrotechnical Commission has published
a standard for fuzzy control programming in part 7 of the IEC 61131 norm in order to offer a well defined
common understanding of the basic means with which to integrate fuzzy control applications in control
systems. In this paper, we introduce an open source Java library called jFuzzyLogic which offers a fully
functional and complete implementation of a fuzzy inference system according to this standard, providing
a programming interface and Eclipse plugin to easily write and test code for fuzzy control applications.
A case study is given to illustrate the use of jFuzzyLogic.McGill Uninversity, Genome QuebecSpanish Government

Search for B+ -> D*+ pi0 decay
We report on a search for the doubly Cabibbo suppressed decay B+ -> D*+ pi0,
based on a data sample of 657 million BBbar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S)
resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy e+ e- collider.
We find no significant signal and set an upper limit of Br(B+ -> D*+ pi0) < 3.6
x 10^-6 at the 90% confidence level. This limit can be used to constrain the
ratio between suppressed and favored B -> D* pi decay amplitudes, r < 0.051, at
the 90% confidence level.Comment: 5pages, 2figures, submitted to PRL (v1); PRL published version (v2:
