    Characteristic Length Scale of Electric Transport Properties of Genomes

    A tight-binding model together with a novel statistical method are used to investigate the relation between the sequence-dependent electric transport properties and the sequences of protein-coding regions of complete genomes. A correlation parameter Ω\Omega is defined to analyze the relation. For some particular propagation length wmaxw_{max}, the transport behaviors of the coding and non-coding sequences are very different and the correlation reaches its maximal value Ωmax\Omega_{max}. wmaxw_{max} and \omax are characteristic values for each species. The possible reason of the difference between the features of transport properties in the coding and non-coding regions is the mechanism of DNA damage repair processes together with the natural selection.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Simulation of valveless micropump and mode analysis

    In this work, a 3-D simulation is performed to study for the solid-fluid coupling effect driven by piezoelectric materials and utilizes asymmetric obstacles to control the flow direction. The result of simulation is also verified. For a micropump, it is crucial to find the optimal working frequency which produce maximum net flow rate. The PZT plate vibrates under the first mode, which is symmetric. Adjusting the working frequency, the maximum flow rate can be obtained. For the micrpump we studied, the optimal working frequency is 3.2K Hz. At higher working frequency, say 20K Hz, the fluid-solid membrane may come out a intermediate mode, which is different from the first mode and the second mode. It is observed that the center of the mode drifts. Meanwhile, the result shows that a phase shift lagging when the excitation force exists in the vibration response.     Expression of Green Fluorescence Protein (GFP) in Zebrafish Muscle through Injection: A Gene Therapy Model

    Expression of the target gene is important for gene therapy. Presently, localized transgenesis is used for gene therapy which can be achieved by a target gene expression. Here, we have reported the plasmid mediated gene therapy to zebrafish model. For this purpose, we have chosen green fluorescent protein (GFP) as a target gene because the expression can be detected easily. GFP was inserted in a plasmid vector, pQE30 to develop the vector pQE30GFP. The plasmid pQE30GFP was constructed form plasmid, pQE30 and pEGFPC2. pQE30GFP injected directly in one group of fish into the muscle where luciferase expression was noted. In another group, after injection electroporation was performed where we have also noted luciferase expression; but, electroporation cause muscle injury to the zebrafish. In our case, the expression was very strong at the site of injection in first group in compare to electroporation group and in both the cases expression was stable more than two weeks

    An Economy-wide Analysis of Impacts of WTO Tiered Formula for Tariff Reduction on Taiwan

    In this study we use Taiwan as a case study to provide an economy-wide analysis of impacts on Taiwan of WTO tariff reduction schemes with different combinations of thresholds and reduction rates. The model we utilized in this study is Taiwan General Equilibrium Model with a WTO module (TAIGEM-WTO, hereafter) that is a multi-sectoral computable general equilibrium (CGE) model of the Taiwan's economy derived from Australian ORANI model (Dixon, Parmenter, Sutton and Vincent, 1982). Simulation results show that results are more sensitive to the scheme of tariff-reduction (i.e., Category 1, 2, and 3) than the tiered levels (i.e., A, B, C, and D) and as a strategy we should pay more attention to the arguments related to the amounts of tariff-reduction. Moreover, changes in nominal average tariff rates are more sensitive and shocks to the economy are more severe when we change the tariff reduction categories rather than the tiered levels. This conclusion also applies to the tiered reduction case when only sensitive products are considered. Finally, simulations with sector's bound rate calculated using arithmetic means have bigger effects than those using import values as weights.     AN ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORK METHOD FOR PREDICTING LOWER LIMB JOINT MOMENTS FROM KINEMATIC PARAMETERS DURING COUNTER-MOVEMENT JUMP

    The purpose of this study was to develop an artificial neural network (ANN) model for predicting the joint moments of lower limbs using solely the kinematic parameters during counter-movement jump (CMJ). Nine female volleyball players performed CMJ. The joint moments were calculated from experimental data by inverse dynamics (called “measured joint moments” in this study). A “303-3-303 ANN model” was developed with 303 neurons in input layer, three neurons in hidden layer and 303 neurons in output layers. The input variables were the left lower limb extension / flexion joint angles, and the output variables were left lower limb extension / flexion joint moments. The results revealed that the ANN model fitted the experimental data well indicating that the model developed in this study was feasible in the assessment of joint moments for CMJ

    The Unpredictability of the Most Energetic Solar Events

    Observations over the past two solar cycles show a highly irregular pattern of occurrence for major solar flares, gamma-ray events, and solar energetic particle (SEP) fluences. Such phenomena do not appear to follow the direct indices of solar magnetic activity, such as the sunspot number. I show that this results from the non-Poisson occurrence for the most energetic events. This Letter also points out a particularly striking example of this irregularity in a comparison between the declining phases of the recent two solar cycles (1993-1995 and 2004-2006, respectively) and traces it through the radiated energies of the flares, the associated SEP fluences, and the sunspot areas. These factors suggest that processes in the solar interior involved with the supply of magnetic flux up to the surface of the Sun have strong correlations in space and time, leading to a complex occurrence pattern that is presently unpredictable on timescales longer than active region lifetimes (weeks) and not correlated well with the solar cycle itself.Comment: 4 page

    A unified approach to realize universal quantum gates in a coupled two-qubit system with fixed always-on coupling

    We demonstrate that in a coupled two-qubit system any single-qubit gate can be decomposed into two conditional two-qubit gates and that any conditional two-qubit gate can be implemented by a manipulation analogous to that used for a controlled two-qubit gate. Based on this we present a unified approach to implement universal single-qubit and two-qubit gates in a coupled two-qubit system with fixed always-on coupling. This approach requires neither supplementary circuit or additional physical qubits to control the coupling nor extra hardware to adjust the energy level structure. The feasibility of this approach is demonstrated by numerical simulation of single-qubit gates and creation of two-qubit Bell states in rf-driven inductively coupled two SQUID flux qubits with realistic device parameters and constant always-on coupling.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Identification of Management and Planning Problems of Urban Water Resources in the Metropolitan Area of Greater San Antonio

    This interim report describes the research performed to date on Project A-017-TEX sponsored by the U. S. Department of Interior Office of Water Resources Research and the Texas A&M University Texas Water Resources Institute. The research reported herein describes the region Encompassed by the San Antonio river basin. Included in the description is a brief summary of the regional economy, demography, and geographical characteristics. Additionally, the quantitative and qualitative information including the inventory and planning control for both surface and ground Water Resource Management of the San Antonio area are presented. Emphasis has been placed upon the identification of the probabilistic nature of various decision-making parameters of Urban Water Resources Management. The methodogies and techniques for the handling of specific problems are being developed and will be presented in the project completion report. Appreciation is expressed to the Alamo Area Council of Governments and the Texas Water Development Board for their assistance in this research. Numerous graduate students contributed to this research. Chief among these is Miss Sharon Tu for her efforts in developing the San Antonio Data Retrieval Program.
