Ultra-dense phosphorus in germanium delta-doped layers
Phosphorus (P) in germanium (Ge) delta-doped layers are fabricated in
ultra-high vacuum by adsorption of phosphine molecules onto an atomically flat
clean Ge(001) surface followed by thermal incorporation of P into the lattice
and epitaxial Ge overgrowth by molecular beam epitaxy. Structural and
electrical characterizations show that P atoms are confined, with minimal
diffusion, into an ultra-narrow 2-nm-wide layer with an electrically-active
sheet carrier concentration of 4x10^13 cm-2 at 4.2 K. These results open up the
possibility of ultra-narrow source/drain regions with unprecedented carrier
densities for Ge n-channel field effect transistors
Micro Balloon Actuators for Aerodynamic Control
A robust, large-force, large-deflection micro balloon actuator for aerodynamic (manoeuvring) control of transonic aircraft has been developed. Using a novel process, high yield linear arrays of silicone balloons on a robust silicon substrate have been fabricated that can deflect vertically in excess of one mm. Balloon actuators have been tested under cyclic conditions to assess reliability. The actuators have been characterized in a wind tunnel to assess their suitability as aerodynamic control surfaces and flight-tested on a jet fighter to assess their resistance to varied temperatures and pressures at high velocity
The effects of surface finish and grain size on the strength of sintered silicon carbide
The effects of surface treatment and microstructure, especially abnormal grain growth, on the strength of sintered SiC were studied. The surfaces of sintered SiC were treated with 400, 800 and 1200 grit diamond wheels. Grain growth was induced by increasing the sintering times at 2050 C. The beta to alpha transformation occurred during the sintering of beta-phase starting materials and was often accompanied by abnormal grain growth. The overall strength distributions were established using Weibull statistics. The strength of the sintered SiC is limited by extrinsic surface flaws in normal-sintered specimens. The finer the surface finish and grain size, the higher the strength. But the strength of abnormal sintering specimens is limited by the abnormally grown large tabular grains. The Weibull modulus increases with decreasing grain size and decreasing grit size for grinding
Prompt Iron Enrichment, Two r-Process Components, and Abundances in Very Metal-Poor Stars
We present a model to explain the wide range of abundances for heavy
r-process elements (mass number A > 130) at low [Fe/H]. This model requires
rapid star formation and/or an initial population of supermassive stars in the
earliest condensed clots of matter to provide a prompt or initial Fe inventory.
Subsequent Fe and r-process enrichment was provided by two types of supernovae:
one producing heavy r-elements with no Fe on a rather short timescale and the
other producing light r-elements (A < or = 130) with Fe on a much longer
timescale.Comment: 5 pages, 2 postscript figures, to appear in ApJ
Simulation of electrostatic ion instabilities in the presence of parallel currents and transverse electric fields
A spatially two-dimensional electrostatic PIC simulation code was used to study the stability of a plasma equilibrium characterized by a localized transverse dc electric field and a field-aligned drift for L is much less than Lx, where Lx is the simulation length in the x direction and L is the scale length associated with the dc electric field. It is found that the dc electric field and the field-aligned current can together play a synergistic role to enable the excitation of electrostatic waves even when the threshold values of the field aligned drift and the E x B drift are individually subcritical. The simulation results show that the growing ion waves are associated with small vortices in the linear stage, which evolve to the nonlinear stage dominated by larger vortices with lower frequencies
Local moment, itinerancy and deviation from Fermi liquid behavior in NaCoO for
Here we report the observation of Fermi surface (FS) pockets via the
Shubnikov de Haas effect in NaCoO for and 0.84,
respectively. Our observations indicate that the FS expected for each compound
intersects their corresponding Brillouin zones, as defined by the previously
reported superlattice structures, leading to small reconstructed FS pockets,
but only if a precise number of holes per unit cell is \emph{localized}. For
the coexistence of itinerant carriers and localized spins on a paramagnetic triangular superlattice leads at low temperatures
to the observation of a deviation from standard Fermi-liquid behavior in the
electrical transport and heat capacity properties, suggesting the formation of
some kind of quantum spin-liquid ground state.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Neutron scattering study of novel magnetic order in Na0.5CoO2
We report polarized and unpolarized neutron scattering measurements of the
magnetic order in single crystals of Na0.5CoO2. Our data indicate that below
T_N=88 K the spins form a novel antiferromagnetic pattern within the CoO2
planes, consisting of alternating rows of ordered and non-ordered Co ions. The
domains of magnetic order are closely coupled to the domains of Na ion order,
consistent with such a two-fold symmetric spin arrangement. Magnetoresistance
and anisotropic susceptibility measurements further support this model for the
electronic ground state.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
