    Direct measurement of the fine-structure interval in alkali atoms using diode lasers

    We demonstrate a technique for directly measuring the fine-structure interval in alkali atoms using two frequency-stabilized diode lasers. Each laser has a linewidth of order 1 MHz and precise tunability: one laser is tuned to a hyperfine transition in the D_1 line, and the other laser to a hyperfine transition in the D_2 line. The outputs of the lasers are fed into a scanning Michelson interferometer that measures the ratio of their wavelengths accurately. To illustrate the technique, we measure the fine-structure interval in Rb, and obtain a value of 237.6000(3)(5) cm^-1 for the hyperfine-free 5P_{3/2} - 5P_{1/2} interval.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures, to be published in Applied Physics Letters, 20 May 2002 editio

    High-accuracy wavemeter based on a stabilized diode laser

    We have built a high-accuracy wavelength meter for tunable lasers using a scanning Michelson interferometer and a reference laser of known wavelength. The reference laser is a frequency stabilized diode laser locked to an atomic transition in Rb. The wavemeter has a statistical error per measurement of 5 parts in 10710^7 which can be reduced considerably by averaging. Using a second stabilized diode laser, we have verified that systematic errors are below 4 parts in 10810^8.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figure

    Observation of persistent flow of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a toroidal trap

    We have observed the persistent flow of Bose-condensed atoms in a toroidal trap. The flow persists without decay for up to 10 s, limited only by experimental factors such as drift and trap lifetime. The quantized rotation was initiated by transferring one unit, \hbar, of the orbital angular momentum from Laguerre-Gaussian photons to each atom. Stable flow was only possible when the trap was multiply-connected, and was observed with a BEC fraction as small as 15%. We also created flow with two units of angular momentum, and observed its splitting into two singly-charged vortices when the trap geometry was changed from multiply- to simply-connected.Comment: 1 file, 5 figure

    We develop and analyze a model of a multi-stage investment project that captures many features of R&D ventures and start-up companies. An important feature these problems share is that the firm learns about the potential profitability of the project throughout its life, but that research and development effort itself is only resolved through additional investment by the firm. In addition, the risks associated with the ultimate cash flows the firm realizes on completion of the project have a systematic component, while the purely technical risks are idiosyncratic. Our model captures these different sources of risk, and allows us to study their interaction in determining the risk premia earned by the venture during development. Our results show that the systematic risk, and the required risk premium, of the venture are highest early in its life, and decrease as it approaches completion, despite the idiosyncratic nature of the technical risk.

The security of the scheme is based on thehardness of the Syndrome Decoding problem and the Goppa CodeDistinguishability problem. The scheme uses the techniques providedby Peikert and Waters using the lossy trapdoor functions.Compared to the existing IND-CCA2 secure variants in standardmodel due to Dowsley et.al. and Freeman et. al. (using the repetition paradigm initiated by Rosen and Segev), this schemeis more efficient as it avoids repetitions

    A case report on a rare presentation of Aeromonas hydrophila

    The genus Aeromonas is a member of the family Vibrionaceae. Aeromonas hydrophila is a water-dwelling, gram-negative rod-shaped bacterium, associated with diarrheal illness and less commonly, bone and soft tissue infections, especially among immunocompromised patients. Here we reported a rare presentation of A. hydrophila causing septicemia, septic arthritis, and osteomyelitis in an immunocompetent patient. A 35-year-old female, known hypothyroidism, presented with low back pain for one and half months and left side hip pain radiating to the left lower limb for one month. While in the hospital, she subsequently developed overwhelming sepsis secondary to septic arthritis and osteomyelitis. Which was secondary to a multidrug-resistant strain of A. hydrophila. Despite broad-spectrum antibiotics and aggressive surgical management, she had a recurrence of the infection. Aeromonas species infection in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients may result in high morbidity and mortality. This organism is highly virulent and multidrug-resistant. So early diagnosis and early administration of antibiotics would give better outcomes

    Sub-natural linewidth in room-temperature Rb vapor using a control laser

    We demonstrate two ways of obtaining sub-natural linewidth for probe absorption through room-temperature Rb vapor. Both techniques use a control laser that drives the transition from a different ground state. The coherent drive splits the excited state into two dressed states (Autler-Townes doublet), which have asymmetric linewidths when the control laser is detuned from resonance. In the first technique, the laser has a large detuning of 1.18 GHz to reduce the linewidth to 5.1 MHz from the Doppler width of 560 MHz. In the second technique, we use a counter-propagating pump beam to eliminate the first-order Doppler effect. The unperturbed probe linewidth is about 13 MHz, which is reduced below 3 MHz (0.5 \Gamma) at a detuning of 11.5 MHz.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figure
