Coherent optical phase transfer over a 32-km fiber with 1-s instability at
The phase coherence of an ultrastable optical frequency reference is fully
maintained over actively stabilized fiber networks of lengths exceeding 30 km.
For a 7-km link installed in an urban environment, the transfer instability is
at 1-s. The excess phase noise of 0.15 rad, integrated from
8 mHz to 25 MHz, yields a total timing jitter of 0.085 fs. A 32-km link
achieves similar performance. Using frequency combs at each end of the
coherent-transfer fiber link, a heterodyne beat between two independent
ultrastable lasers, separated by 3.5 km and 163 THz, achieves a 1-Hz linewidth.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
New classes of exact solutions of three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations
New classes of exact solutions of the three-dimensional unsteady
Navier-Stokes equations containing arbitrary functions and parameters are
described. Various periodic and other solutions, which are expressed through
elementary functions are obtained. The general physical interpretation and
classification of solutions is given.Comment: 11 page
Strangers in the night: Discovery of a dwarf spheroidal galaxy on its first Local Group infall
We present spectroscopic observations of the AndXII dwarf spheroidal galaxy
using DEIMOS/Keck-II, showing it to be moving rapidly through the Local Group
(-556 km/s heliocentric velocity, -281 km/s relative to Andromeda from the MW),
falling into the Local Group from ~115 kpc beyond Andromeda's nucleus. AndXII
therefore represents a dwarf galaxy plausibly falling into the Local Group for
the first time, and never having experienced a dense galactic environment. From
Green Bank Telescope observations, a limit on the H{I} gas mass of <3000 Msun
suggests that AndXII's gas could have been removed prior to experiencing the
tides of the Local Group galaxies. Orbit models suggest the dwarf is close to
the escape velocity of M31 for published mass models. AndXII is our best direct
evidence for the late infall of satellite galaxies, a prediction of
cosmological simulations.Comment: 4 pages 5 figures 1 table, accepted in ApJ, july issu
Sub-femtosecond absolute timing precision with a 10 GHz hybrid photonic-microwave oscillator
We present an optical-electronic approach to generating microwave signals
with high spectral purity. By circumventing shot noise and operating near
fundamental thermal limits, we demonstrate 10 GHz signals with an absolute
timing jitter for a single hybrid oscillator of 420 attoseconds (1Hz - 5 GHz)
