Antarctic Meteorites: A Statistical Look at a Uniquely Valuable Resource
As of the end of the 2018-19 field season, the U.S. Antarctic meteorite program has surpassed 23,000 meteorites collected. The U.S. collection is valuable in that it is classified in its entirety. The systematic methods employed to collect the meteorites have provided meteorites of more than 40 types, many of which are the first of their type ever recognized. One of the early drivers for consistent and methodical characterization of the entire U.S. Antarctic collection was to allow statistical comparisons. Early statistical assessments of the U.S. Antarctic collection examined mass distributions and the relative frequency of meteorite types as well as comparisons to a defined set of modern falls. Using these statistics argued that the flux of H chondrites changed over time used model size distributions to deconstruct the contribution of wind movement, meteorite supply and search losses to the Antarctic collection. Mass-based statistics and size distribution comparisons were examined by investigated various aspects of the statistics, including comparison with modern falls/Saharan finds. Scientific Bounty Among Meteorites Recovered from the Dominion Range, Transantarctic Mountains
The US Antarctic Meteorite Pro-gram has visited the Dominion Range in the Transantarctic Mountains during several different sea-sons, including 1985, 2003, 2008, 2010, 2014 and 2018. Total recovered meteorites from this region is close to 3000. The 1985 (11 samples), 2003 (141 samples), 2008 (521 samples), 2010 (901 samples), 2014 (562 samples) seasons have been fully classified, and 2018 (865 samples) are in the process of being classified and characterized. Given that close to 2200 samples have been classified so far, with more expected in 2020, now is a good time to summarize the state of the collection. Here we describe the significant samples documented from this area, as well as a large meteorite shower that dominates the statistics of the region
Modelo de masa incorporada en pinares mediterráneos: un caso de estudio en rodales de pino silvestre (Pinus sylvestris L.) y pino negral (Pinus pinister Ait.) en España
National Forest Inventories (NFI) are a basic tool for forestry planning at the National level. A new two-step system for predicting ingrowth compatible with NFI data is presented in order to improve long-term estimation of stand condition. In growth and yield models, an ingrowth submodel is a key feature for long-term estimation. An accurate projection of ingrowth is needed to avoid model projection bias and inaccuracy. A two-step approach was used, which consisted of (I) estimating the probability of ingrowth occurrence on a sample plot and (II) quantifying the ingrowth in terms of basal area. Logistic regression was used for step 1, while linear regression was used for step 2. A good performance of the joint ingrowth model for Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Mediterranean Maritime pine (Pinus pinaster AiSsp mesogeensis) stands was observed. Logistic model include quadratic mean diameter as independent variables for both species while basal area is only included for Mediterranean Maritime. Quadratic mean diameter is the only independent variable in linear model for both species. The presented two-step modeling methodology for ingrowth is applicable to data from National Forest Inventories with concentric plots.Los Inventarios Forestales Nacionales (IFN) son un instrumento básico para la planificación forestal a nivel nacional. Con el objeto de predecir la masa incorporada, se presenta un nuevo sistema bietápico compatible con los datos del IFN para de esta forma mejorar las estimaciones a largo plazo. En los modelos de crecimiento y producción, un modelo de masa incorporada es clave para la proyección a largo plazo dado que se precisa una adecuada estimación de la masa incorporada para evitar sesgos e imprecisiones. Se utilizó un método bietápico basado en (I) estimar la probabilidad de presencia de masa incorporada en la parcela y (II) cuantificar la masa incorporada en área basimétrica. Para el paso 1 se utilizó la regresión logística mientras que para el paso 2 se utilizó regresión lineal. Se observó un buen comportamiento del modelo conjunto tanto para pino silvestre (Pinus sylvestris L.) como para pino negral (Pinus pinaster AiSsp mesogeensis). El modelo logístico incluye el diámetro medio cuadrático como variable independiente para ambas especies mientras que el área basimétrica solo es significativa en el caso del pino negral. En el modelo lineal, el diámetro medio cuadrático es significativo para las dos especies. El método bietápico presentado para estimar la masa incorporada es aplicable a los datos de Inventarios Forestales Nacionales basados en parcelas concéntricas
HIV testing practices among men who have sex with men in Buenos Aires, Argentina
The objective of the study was to explore HIV-testing practices among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in light of current international health guidelines that recommend frequent HIV testing for MSM who engage in high-risk behavior. Participants, who were recruited using respondent-driven sampling (RDS), were 500 mostly young, nongay-identified MSM of low socioeconomic status, high levels of unemployment, living mainly in the less-affluent areas surrounding Buenos Aires, and lacking health insurance. They provided blood samples for HIV testing and responded to a Computer Assisted Self Interview. Fifty-two percent had never been tested for HIV, and 20% had been tested only once; 17% were found to be HIV infected, of whom almost half were unaware of their status. Main reasons for never having tested previously were: not feeling at risk, fear of finding out results, and not knowing where to get tested. Among those previously tested, men had been tested a median of 2 times with their most recent test having occurred a median of 2.7 years prior to study enrollment. Of those who had not tested positive before entering the study, only 41% returned for their results. HIV testing was infrequent and insufficient for early detection of infection, entry into treatment, and protection of sexual partners. This was particularly the case among nongay-identified MSM. Testing campaigns should aim to help MSM become aware of their risk behavior, decrease fear of testing by explaining available treatment resources and decreasing the stigma associated with HIV, and by publicizing information about free and confidential testing locations. Determining the Metal/Silicate Partition Coefficient of Germanium: Implications for Core and Mantle Differentiation.
Currently there are several hypotheses for the thermal state of the early Earth. Some hypothesize a shallow magma ocean, or deep magma ocean, or heterogeneous accretion which requires no magma ocean at all. Previous models are unable to account for Ge depletion in Earth's mantle relative to CI chondrites. In this study, the element Ge is used to observe the way siderophile elements partition into the metallic core. The purpose of this research is to provide new data for Ge and to further test these models for Earth's early stages. The partition coefficients (D(sub Ge) = c(sub metal)/c(sub silicate), where D = partition coefficient of Ge and c = concentration of Ge in the metal and silicate, respectively) of siderophile elements were studied by performing series of high pressure, high temperature experiments. They are also dependent on oxygen fugacity, and metal and silicate composition. Ge is a moderately siderophile element found in both the mantle and core, and has yet to be studied systematically at high temperatures. Moreover, previous work has been limited by the low solubility of Ge in silicate melts (less than 100 ppm and close to detection limits for electron microprobe analysis). Reported here are results from 14 experiments studying the partitioning of Ge between silicate and metallic liquids. The Ge concentrations were then analyzed using Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) which is sensitive enough to detect ppm levels of Ge in the silicate melt
Measuring the galaxy power spectrum and scale-scale correlations with multiresolution-decomposed covariance -- I. method
We present a method of measuring galaxy power spectrum based on the
multiresolution analysis of the discrete wavelet transformation (DWT). Since
the DWT representation has strong capability of suppressing the off-diagonal
components of the covariance for selfsimilar clustering, the DWT covariance for
popular models of the cold dark matter cosmogony generally is diagonal, or
(scale)-diagonal in the scale range, in which the second scale-scale
correlations are weak. In this range, the DWT covariance gives a lossless
estimation of the power spectrum, which is equal to the corresponding Fourier
power spectrum banded with a logarithmical scaling. In the scale range, in
which the scale-scale correlation is significant, the accuracy of a power
spectrum detection depends on the scale-scale or band-band correlations. This
is, for a precision measurements of the power spectrum, a measurement of the
scale-scale or band-band correlations is needed. We show that the DWT
covariance can be employed to measuring both the band-power spectrum and second
order scale-scale correlation. We also present the DWT algorithm of the binning
and Poisson sampling with real observational data. We show that the alias
effect appeared in usual binning schemes can exactly be eliminated by the DWT
binning. Since Poisson process possesses diagonal covariance in the DWT
representation, the Poisson sampling and selection effects on the power
spectrum and second order scale-scale correlation detection are suppressed into
minimum. Moreover, the effect of the non-Gaussian features of the Poisson

Childhood sexual experiences with an older partner among men who have sex with men in Buenos Aires, Argentina
This study sought to describe childhood sexual experiences with older partners (CSEOP) among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Buenos Aires, Argentina. MSM were recruited through respondent driven sampling. They responded to a computer administered self-interview with questions on CSEOP, operationalized as manual, oral, genital, or anal contact prior to age 13 with a partner at least 4 years older. Of the 500 respondents, only 25% identified as gay. Eighteen percent of the respondents reported CSEOP, the majority of whom did not feel they were hurt by the experience and did not consider it to be childhood sexual abuse (CSA). Over two-thirds of MSM who reported CSEOP said that their older partner was a female. Only 4% of those with a female partner felt their experience was CSA compared to 44% of those who had a male partner. Among all men reporting CSEOP, those who felt sexually abused were more likely to have been physically forced or threatened, physically hurt, and emotionally hurt than those who did not feel sexually abused. Having CSEOP, being hurt by the experiences, and perceiving the experiences as sexual abuse were not associated with current HIV sexual risk or substance use behavior. In this sample of MSM in Argentina, a substantial minority reported CSEOP. Those who felt they had been sexually abused were much more likely to have had an older male partner than an older female partner, and were more likely to report having been physically forced and threatened by their older partner.Fil: Dolezal, Curtis.
