Significant differences in incubation times in sheep infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy result from variation at codon 141 in the PRNP gene
The susceptibility of sheep to prion infection is linked to variation in the PRNP gene, which
encodes the prion protein. Common polymorphisms occur at codons 136, 154 and 171. Sheep
which are homozygous for the A<sub>136</sub>R<sub>154</sub>Q<sub>171</sub> allele are the most susceptible to bovine spongiform
encephalopathy (BSE). The effect of other polymorphisms on BSE susceptibility is unknown. We
orally infected ARQ/ARQ Cheviot sheep with equal amounts of BSE brain homogenate and a
range of incubation periods was observed. When we segregated sheep according to the amino
acid (L or F) encoded at codon 141 of the PRNP gene, the shortest incubation period was
observed in LL141 sheep, whilst incubation periods in FF<sub>141</sub> and LF<sub>141</sub> sheep were significantly
longer. No statistically significant differences existed in the expression of total prion protein or the
disease-associated isoform in BSE-infected sheep within each genotype subgroup. This
suggested that the amino acid encoded at codon 141 probably affects incubation times through
direct effects on protein misfolding rates
Antigen-driven T-cell turnover.
A mathematical model is developed to characterize the distribution of cell turnover rates within a population of T lymphocytes. Previous models of T-cell dynamics have assumed a constant uniform turnover rate; here we consider turnover in a cell pool subject to clonal proliferation in response to diverse and repeated antigenic stimulation. A basic framework is defined for T-cell proliferation in response to antigen, which explicitly describes the cell cycle during antigenic stimulation and subsequent cell division. The distribution of T-cell turnover rates is then calculated based on the history of random exposures to antigens. This distribution is found to be bimodal, with peaks in cell frequencies in the slow turnover (quiescent) and rapid turnover (activated) states. This distribution can be used to calculate the overall turnover for the cell pool, as well as individual contributions to turnover from quiescent and activated cells. The impact of heterogeneous turnover on the dynamics of CD4(+) T-cell infection by HIV is explored. We show that our model can resolve the paradox of high levels of viral replication occurring while only a small fraction of cells are infected
High-resolution thermal expansion measurements under Helium-gas pressure
We report on the realization of a capacitive dilatometer, designed for
high-resolution measurements of length changes of a material for temperatures
1.4 K 300 K and hydrostatic pressure 250 MPa. Helium
(He) is used as a pressure-transmitting medium, ensuring
hydrostatic-pressure conditions. Special emphasis has been given to guarantee,
to a good approximation, constant-pressure conditions during temperature
sweeps. The performance of the dilatometer is demonstrated by measurements of
the coefficient of thermal expansion at pressures 0.1 MPa (ambient
pressure) and 104 MPa on a single crystal of azurite,
Cu(CO)(OH), a quasi-one-dimensional spin S = 1/2 Heisenberg
antiferromagnet. The results indicate a strong effect of pressure on the

Extinction Curves, Distances, and Clumpiness of Diffuse Interstellar Dust Clouds
We present CCD photometry in UBVRI of several thousand Galactic field stars
in four large (>1 degree^2) regions centered on diffuse interstellar dust
clouds, commonly referred to as ``cirrus'' clouds (with optical depth A_V less
than unity). Our goal in studying these stars is to investigate the properties
of the cirrus clouds. A comparison of the observed stellar surface density
between on-cloud and off-cloud regions as a function of apparent magnitude in
each of the five bands effectively yields a measure of the extinction through
each cloud. For two of the cirrus clouds, this method is used to derive UBVRI
star counts-based extinction curves, and U-band counts are used to place
constraints on the cloud distance. The color distribution of stars and their
location in (U-B, B-V) and (B-V, V-I) color-color space are analyzed in order
to determine the amount of selective extinction (reddening) caused by the
cirrus. The color excesses, A_lambda-A_V, derived from stellar color histogram
offsets for the four clouds, are better fit by a reddening law that rises
steeply towards short wavelengths [R_V==A_V/E(B-V)<=2] than by the standard law
(R_V=3.1). This may be indicative of a higher-than-average abundance of small
dust grains relative to larger grains in diffuse cirrus clouds. The shape of
the counts-based effective extinction curve and a comparison of different
estimates of the dust optical depth (extinction optical depth derived from
background star counts/colors; emission optical depth derived from far infrared
measurements), are used to measure the degree of clumpiness in clouds. The set
of techniques explored in this paper can be readily adapted to the Sloan
Digital Sky Survey data set in order to carry out a systematic, large-scale

Heat Capacity and Magnetic Phase Diagram of the Low-Dimensional Antiferromagnet YBaCuO
A study by specific heat of a polycrystalline sample of the low-dimensional
magnetic system YBaCuO is presented. Magnetic fields up to 14 T are
applied and permit to extract the (,) phase diagram. Below
T, the N\'eel temperature, associated with a
three-dimensional antiferromagnetic long-range ordering, is constant and equals
K. Above , increases linearly with and a
field-induced increase of the entropy at is related to the presence of an
isosbestic point at K, where all the specific heat curves cross.
A comparison is made between YBaCuO and the quasi-two-dimensional
magnetic systems BaNiVO, SrCuOCl, and
PrCuO, for which very similar phase diagrams have been reported. An
effective field-induced magnetic anisotropy is proposed to explain these phase

The Fractal Properties of the Source and BEC
Using simple space-time implementation of the random cascade model we
investigate numerically influence of the possible fractal structure of the
emitting source on Bose-Einstein correlations between identical particles. The

The remittances behaviour of the second generation in Europe: altruism or self-interest?
Whereas most research on remittances focuses on first-generation migrants, the aim of this paper is to investigate the remitting behaviour of the host country-born children of migrants - the second generation - in various European cities. Some important studies found that migrant transnationalism is not only a phenomenon for the first generation, but
also apply to the second and higher generations, through, among other things, family visits, elder care, and remittances. At the same time, the maintenance of a strong ethnic identity in the ‘host’ society does not necessarily mean that second-generation migrants have strong transnational ties to their ‘home’ country.
The data used in this paper is from “The Integration of the European Second Generation” (TIES) project. The survey collected information on approximately 6,250 individuals aged 18-35 with at least one migrant parent from Morocco, Turkey or former Yugoslavia, in 15 European cities, regrouped in 8 ‘countries’. For the purpose of this paper, only
analyses for Austria (Linz and Vienna); Switzerland (Basle and Zurich); Germany (Berlin and Frankfurt); France (Paris and Strasbourg); the Netherlands (Amsterdam and Rotterdam); Spain (Barcelona and Madrid); and Sweden (Stockholm) will be presented.
Microscopic Model for Granular Stratification and Segregation
We study segregation and stratification of mixtures of grains differing in
size, shape and material properties poured in two-dimensional silos using a
microscopic lattice model for surface flows of grains. The model incorporates
the dissipation of energy in collisions between rolling and static grains and
an energy barrier describing the geometrical asperities of the grains. We study
the phase diagram of the different morphologies predicted by the model as a
function of the two parameters. We find regions of segregation and
stratification, in agreement with experimental finding, as well as a region of

Some Directions beyond Traditional Quantum Secret Sharing
We investigate two directions beyond the traditional quantum secret sharing
(QSS). First, a restriction on QSS that comes from the no-cloning theorem is
that any pair of authorized sets in an access structure should overlap. From
the viewpoint of application, this places an unnatural constraint on secret
sharing. We present a generalization, called assisted QSS (AQSS), where access
structures without pairwise overlap of authorized sets is permissible, provided
some shares are withheld by the share dealer. We show that no more than
withheld shares are required, where is the minimum number
of {\em partially linked classes} among the authorized sets for the QSS. Our
result means that such applications of QSS need not be thwarted by the
no-cloning theorem. Secondly, we point out a way of combining the features of
QSS and quantum key distribution (QKD) for applications where a classical
information is shared by quantum means. We observe that in such case, it is
