Nano-vectors for efficient liver specific gene transfer
Recent progress in nanotechnology has triggered the site specific drug/gene delivery research and gained wide acknowledgment in contemporary DNA therapeutics. Amongst various organs, liver plays a crucial role in various body functions and in addition, the site is a primary location of metastatic tumor growth. In past few years, a plethora of nano-vectors have been developed and investigated to target liver associated cells through receptor mediated endocytosis. This emerging paradigm in cellular drug/gene delivery provides promising approach to eradicate genetic as well as acquired diseases affecting the liver. The present review provides a comprehensive overview of potential of various delivery systems, viz., lipoplexes, liposomes, polyplexes, nanoparticles and so forth to selectively relocate foreign therapeutic DNA into liver specific cell type via the receptor mediated endocytosis. Various receptors like asialoglycoprotein receptors (ASGP-R) provide unique opportunity to target liver parenchymal cells. The results obtained so far reveal tremendous promise and offer enormous options to develop novel DNA-based pharmaceuticals for liver disorders in near future
Računanje vrpčaste strukture nelokalnim pseudopotencijalima
Energy bands of Rb and Cs have been calculated for the first time using average or effective pseudopotentials obtained from non-local ones. It is shown that the results so obtained compare well to those obtained with full non-local calculations.

A clinical study on fetomaternal outcome in jaundice with pregnancy
Background: Jaundice in pregnancy and pregnancy in women with preexisting liver disease is not very uncommon. However it takes a major toll on health of both mother and fetus, due to increased morbidity and mortality for both mother and fetus, categorizing pregnancy as a high risk one. The distribution of jaundice in pregnancy varies throughout the world, but is seen more in developing countries. The course and outcome of liver disorder in pregnancy is altered due to various hemodynamic, hormonal and immunological changes unique to pregnancy. The hepatic functions during pregnancy are affected by increase in serum estrogen and progesterone levels. Methods: This was a prospective study of 70 cases of pregnancy with jaundice admitted in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Sheth V.S. General Hospital, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. The duration of study was from June 2015 to December 2018. During this period 70 patients were admitted with jaundice in pregnancy. Patients were analyzed with regards to socio demographic profile, investigations, maternal and perinatal outcome. Results: The incidence of pregnancy with jaundice in present study was 0.32%. Most common cause identified was viral hepatitis in 27 cases (38.57%) out of which 23(32.85%) cases being hepatitis E. Followed by HELLP syndrome, pre eclempsia, eclempsia in 24(34.28%) cases. 13(18.57%) cases were belonged to cholestatic jaundice of pregnancy. Rest 6(8.56%) cases belonged to malaria, portal hypertension due to liver disease etc. Out of total 70 patients 53(75.71%) women from rural area, 54(77.13%) patients were from age group of 20-29years.Maximum patients were multigravida i.e. 28 (40%) and 66(94.28%) women coming from lower middle and lower socio economic class. There were 9 maternal deaths, 5 due to DIC. Total vaginal deliveries were 40, 24 patients underwent LSCS, 4 patients had abortion, and 2 expired undelivered. Most common complication was DIC in 16(22.85%) cases and thrombocytopenia in 14(31.67%) cases. 30(42.85%) babies were LBW and 18(25.7%) babies were IUGR.Conclusions: Prompt diagnosis and accurate evaluation and multidisciplinary approach of management in pregnancy with jaundice at a tertiary care center with good NICU is helpful in reducing maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity
Effect of early maternal newborn skin to skin contact in labour room on third stage of labour and success at breastfeeding
Background: Immediate postpartum period and birth pose many challenges for the mother and the new-born. Initiation of early skin to skin contact in the labour room can be beneficial to both of them. Methods: Randomized control trial conducted over a period of 7 months in a tertiary care centre enrolling 400 laboring women.200 in the control group were given routine care. In the 200women in the study group, the newborn was given immediate skin to skin contact by placing him/her on the mother’s chest. Results: Duration of third stage of labour was less than 10 minutes in 95%women of study group compared to 56% women in the control group(p<0.01). Placenta was expulsed as a whole in 98% cases in the study group compared to 81% in the control group. Successful breastfeeding was observed in 88% women in study group compared to 54%in the control group(p<0.01). Breastfeeding was initiated within 30 minutes of birth in 96%women in the study group compared to 41% in the control group. Conclusions: Uterus could contract faster with the complete expulsion of placenta and shortening of the third stage of labour with early skin to skin contact. The newborn showed early initiation, success at breastfeeding and longer first breastfeeding with early skin to skin contact
Polyethylene Maleate Copolyesters as Coating Materials for Piezoelectric Quartz Crystal-based Chemical Sensors
Polyethylene maleate (PEM) was synthesised by direct polycondensation of maleic anhydride and ethylene glycol in toluene under reflux usingp-toluene sulphonic acid as a catalyst. Structure of PEM was further modified by varying nature of diols and acid components, chain length of glycols, incorporation of aromatic and fluorine groups in the chain. Formation of PEM was monitored by gas chromatography. The parameters like degree of polymerisation, number average molecular weight (Mn), and weight average molecular weight (Mw) were calculated from the extent of reaction and stoichiometric ratio of the reactants. The number average molecular weight was also determined using Knauer vapour pressure osmometer. Cohesive energy, volume, and solubility parameters of PEM-based copolyesters were calculated by group contribution method. These PEM-based copolyesters’ have been evaluated as sorbent-coating materials for the detection of organ0 phosphorus(OP)compo using dimethylmethylphosphonate (DMMP) as model compound and piezoelectric crystal detector. PEMbisphenol A is found to be the most sensitive and potential coating material for the detection of OP compounds using piezoelectric crystal detector. Potential PEM-based copolyesters have been characterised by viscosity, infrared spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, Mn and thermal stability
A non-degenerate optical parametric oscillator as a high-flux source for quantum lithography
We investigate the use of a non-degenerate parametric oscillator (NDPO) as a
source for quantum lithography, for which the light can have high-flux and
strong non-classical features. This builds on the proposal of Boto, et al. [A.
N. Boto, et al., PRL (85), 2733 (2000)], for etching simple patterns on
multi-photon absorbing materials with sub-Rayleigh resolution, using special
two-mode entangled states of light. An NDPO has two outgoing modes
differentiated by polarization or direction of propagation, but sharing the
same optical frequency. We derive analytical expressions for the multi-photon
absorption rates when the NDPO is operated below, near, and above its
threshold. The resulting interference patterns are characterized by an
effective wavelength half that for the illuminating modes. We compare our
results with those for the case of a high-gain optical amplifier source, and
discuss the relative merit of the NDPO
Fluorinated Epoxy Resins-based Sorbent Coating Materials for Quartz Piezoelectric Crystal Detector
Fluorinated epoxy resins were synthesised and evaluated as sorbent coating materials for the detection of organophosphorus compounds using quartz piezoelectric crystal detector. These resins were prepared by reacting excess of epichlorohydrin with each of or in combination of fluorinated diols, ie, a, a, a', a' tetrakis (trifluoromethyl) 1,3 benzene dimethanol (TTFMBD), 4,4'bis-2-hydroxy hexafluoro isopropyl) biphenyl (BHHFIBP), 4,4'dihydroxyocta fluorodiphenyl (DHOFDP) and 2,2,3,3,4,4 hexafluoro 1,5 pentanediol (HFPD) in the presence of sodium hydroxide at reflux temperature. These polymers were extracted in organic solvents and dried. Each of these fluoroepoxy resins were coated over quartz piezoelectric crystal by solution-casting method and tested using dimethylmethyl phosphonate (DMMP) as model compound. Change in the frequency (AF) of quartz piezoelectric crystal oscillator was recorded. Sensitive and potential fluorinated epoxy resins, ie, diglycidylethers (DGE) of HFPD-TTFMBD (in the molar ratio 6:4) and DGE (HFPD-BHHFIBP in the molar ratio 4:6) were characterised by viscosity, number average molecular weight (Mn), epoxy equivalent, infrared spectroscopy, and thermal stability
