Validation of empirical measures of welfare change: comment
In an excellent article from a recent issue of this journal, Sellar, Stoll and Chavas (1985) make a technical error which causes them to misstate their closed-ended estimates of willingness to pay. Truncation of the estimated cummulative distribution function must we made explicit in compution of willingness to pay.nonmarket valuation; contingent valuation; stated preferences; welfare evaluation; willingness to pay

VALIDATING CONTINGENT VALUATION WITH SURVEYS OF EXPERTS
Contingent-valuation estimates for white-water boating passengers are compared with Likert ratings by river guides. The approach involves asking whether passengers and their guides ordinally rank alternative flows the same. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Contingent Valuation Panel (1993) suggested "one might want to compare its (contingent-valuation's) outcome with that provided by a panel of experts." River guides constitute a counterfactual panel of "experts." For commercial trips, optimum flows are 34,000 cfs and 31,000 cfs for passengers and guides, and the comparable figures for private trips are 28,000 cfs and 29,000 cfs. In the NOAA Panel framework, passengers can evaluate the consequences of various river flows and translate this into contingent-valuation responses.Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

Estimates of genetic parameters of distal limb fracture and superficial digital flexor tendon injury in UK Thoroughbred racehorses
A retrospective cohort study of distal limb fracture and superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) injury in Thoroughbred racehorses was conducted using health records generated by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) between 2000 and 2010. After excluding records of horses that had both flat and jump racing starts, repeated records were reduced to a single binary record per horse (<i>n</i>ā=ā66,507, 2982 sires), and the heritability of each condition was estimated using residual maximum likelihood (REML) with animal logistic regression models. Similarly, the heritability of each condition was estimated for the flat racing and jump racing populations separately. Bivariate mixed models were used to generate estimates of genetic correlations between SDFT injury and distal limb fracture.
The heritability of distal limb fracture ranged from 0.21 to 0.37. The heritability of SDFT injury ranged from 0.31 to 0.34. SDFT injury and distal limb fracture were positively genetically correlated. These findings suggest that reductions in the risk of the conditions studied could be attempted using targeted breeding strategies

Using Geographic Information Systems to investigate variations in accessibility to āextended hoursā primary healthcare provision
There are ongoing policy concerns surrounding the difficulty in obtaining timely appointments to primary healthcare services and the potential impact on, for example, attendance at accident and emergency services and potential health outcomes. Using the case study of potential access to primary healthcare services in Wales, Geographic Information System (GIS)ābased tools that permit a consideration of populationātoāprovider ratios over space are used to examine variations in geographical accessibility to general practitioner (GP) surgeries offering appointment times outside of ācoreā operating hours. Correlation analysis is used to explore the association of accessibility scores with potential demand for such services using UK Population Census data. Unlike the situation in England, there is a tendency for accessibility to those surgeries offering āextendedā hours of appointment times to be better for more deprived census areas in Wales. However, accessibility to surgeries offering appointments in the evening was associated with lower levels of working age population classed as āeconomically activeā; that is, those who could be targeted beneficiaries of policies geared towards āextendedā appointment hours provision. Such models have the potential to identify spatial mismatches of different facets of primary healthcare, such as āextendedā hours provision available at GP surgeries, and are worthy of further investigation, especially in relation to policies targeted at particular demographic groups
Towards More Data-Aware Application Integration (extended version)
Although most business application data is stored in relational databases,
programming languages and wire formats in integration middleware systems are
not table-centric. Due to costly format conversions, data-shipments and faster
computation, the trend is to "push-down" the integration operations closer to
the storage representation.
We address the alternative case of defining declarative, table-centric
integration semantics within standard integration systems. For that, we replace
the current operator implementations for the well-known Enterprise Integration
Patterns by equivalent "in-memory" table processing, and show a practical
realization in a conventional integration system for a non-reliable,
"data-intensive" messaging example. The results of the runtime analysis show
that table-centric processing is promising already in standard, "single-record"
message routing and transformations, and can potentially excel the message
throughput for "multi-record" table messages.Comment: 18 Pages, extended version of the contribution to British

Spanning Trees on Lattices and Integration Identities
For a lattice with vertices and dimension equal or higher
than two, the number of spanning trees grows asymptotically
as in the thermodynamic limit. We present exact integral
expressions for the asymptotic growth constant for spanning trees
on several lattices. By taking different unit cells in the calculation, many
integration identities can be obtained. We also give on the
homeomorphic expansion of -regular lattices with vertices inserted on
each edge.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl
