Parameter estimation in pair hidden Markov models
This paper deals with parameter estimation in pair hidden Markov models
(pair-HMMs). We first provide a rigorous formalism for these models and discuss
possible definitions of likelihoods. The model being biologically motivated,
some restrictions with respect to the full parameter space naturally occur.
Existence of two different Information divergence rates is established and
divergence property (namely positivity at values different from the true one)
is shown under additional assumptions. This yields consistency for the
parameter in parametrization schemes for which the divergence property holds.

Backlight units are the most relevant element in display with respect to the energy consumption. In addition, the quality of backlight units in terms of brightness, homogenous light distribution, and the angle of light radiation, dramatically influence the overall quality of a display. Within this paper a new approach for the production of complex micro optics on large surfaces is presented. The technology is being optimised within the FlexPAET project for the production of next generation backlight units which allow for more efficient display illumination
Expectation adjustment in the housing market: insights from the Scottish auction system
This paper examines price expectation adjustment of house buyers and sellers to rapid changes in the housing market using data from Scotland where houses are sold through 'first-price sealed-bid' auctions. These auctions provide more information on market signals, incentives and the behaviour of market participants than private treaty sales. This paper therefore provides a theoretical framework for analysing revealed preference data generated from these auctions. We specifically focus on the analysis of the selling to asking price difference, the 'bid-premium'. The bid-premium is shown to be affected by expectations of future price movements, market duration and high bidding frequency. The bid-premium reflects consumers' expectations, adapting to market conditions more promptly than asking price setting behaviour and final sale prices. The volatile conditions of the recent housing market bubble are fully reflected in the bid-premium, whereas the asking and sale prices are much less prone to rapid movements
Applications of ethylene vinyl acetate as an encapsulation material for terrestrial photovoltaic modules
Terrestrial photovoltaic modules must undergo substantial reductions in cost in order to become economically attractive as practical devices for large scale production of electricity. Part of the cost reductions must be realized by the encapsulation materials that are used to package, protect, and support the solar cells, electrical interconnects, and other ancillary components. As many of the encapsulation materials are polymeric, cost reductions necessitate the use of low cost polymers. The performance and status of ethylene vinyl acetate, a low cost polymer that is being investigated as an encapsulation material for terrestrial photovoltaic modules, are described
Did Cuts in State Aid During the Great Recession Lead to Changes in Local Property Taxes?
During the Great Recession and its aftermath, state and local governments' revenue streams dried up due to diminished taxes. Budget cuts affected many aspects of government; in this paper, we investigate whether (and how) local school districts modified their funding and taxing decisions in response to changes in state aid in the post-recession period. Using detailed district-level panel data from New York and a fixed effects as well as an instrumental variables strategy, we find strong evidence that school districts did indeed respond to state aid cuts in the post-recession period by countering the cuts. In comparison with the pre-recession period, a unit decrease in state aid was associated with a relative increase in local funding per pupil. To further probe the school district role, we explore whether the property tax rate, which districts set each year in response to budgetary needs, also responded to state aid cuts. Indeed, we find that relative to the pre-recession period, the post-recession period was characterized by a strong negative relationship between the property tax rate and state aid per pupil. In other words, after the recession a unit decrease in state aid was associated with a relative increase in the property tax rate in the post-recession period (in comparison with the pre-recession period)
Stormy weather in 3C 196.1: nuclear outbursts and merger events shape the environment of the hybrid radio galaxy 3C 196.1
We present a multi-wavelength analysis based on archival radio, optical and
X-ray data of the complex radio source 3C 196.1, whose host is the brightest
cluster galaxy of a cluster. HST data show H+[N II] emission
aligned with the jet 8.4 GHz radio emission. An H+[N II] filament
coincides with the brightest X-ray emission, the northern hotspot. Analysis of
the X-ray and radio images reveals cavities located at galactic- and cluster-
scales. The galactic-scale cavity is almost devoid of 8.4 GHz radio emission
and the south-western H+[N II] emission is bounded (in projection) by
this cavity. The outer cavity is co-spatial with the peak of 147 MHz radio
emission, and hence we interpret this depression in X-ray surface brightness as
being caused by a buoyantly rising bubble originating from an AGN outburst
280 Myrs ago. A \textit{Chandra} snapshot observation allowed us to
constrain the physical parameters of the cluster, which has a cool core with a
low central temperature 2.8 keV, low central entropy index 13 keV
cm and a short cooling time of 500 Myr, which is of the age
of the Universe at this redshift. By fitting jumps in the X-ray density we
found Mach numbers between 1.4 and 1.6, consistent with a shock origin. We also
found compelling evidence of a past merger, indicated by a morphology
reminiscent of gas sloshing in the X-ray residual image. Finally, we computed
the pressures, enthalpies and jet powers associated with
the cavities: erg,

Extended X-ray emission in radio galaxies: the peculiar case of 3C 305
Extended X-ray structures are common in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). Here
we present the first case of a Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) radio galaxy, 3C
305, in which the X-ray radiation appears to be associated with the optical
emission line region, dominated by the [O III]5007. On the basis of a
morphological study, performed using the comparison between the X-rays, the
optical and the radio band, we argue that the high energy emission has a
thermal nature and it is not directly linked to the radio jet and hotspots of
this source. Finally, we discuss the origin of the extended X-ray structure
connected with the optical emission line region following two different
interpretations: as due to the interaction between matter outflows and
shock-heated environment gas, or as due to gas photoionized by nuclear

Spatially resolved spectra of 3C galaxy nuclei
We present and discuss visible-wavelength long-slit spectra of four low
redshift 3C galaxies obtained with the STIS instrument on the Hubble Space
Telescope. The slit was aligned with near-nuclear jet-like structure seen in
HST images of the galaxies, to give unprecedented spatial resolution of the
galaxy inner regions. In 3C 135 and 3C 171, the spectra reveal clumpy emission
line structures that indicate outward motions of a few hundred km s
within a centrally illuminated and ionised biconical region. There may also be
some low-ionisation high-velocity material associated with 3C 135. In 3C 264
and 3C 78, the jets have blue featureless spectra consistent with their
proposed synchrotron origin. There is weak associated line emission in the
innermost part of the jets with mild outflow velocity. These jets are bright
and highly collimated only within a circumnuclear region of lower galaxy
luminosity, which is not dusty. We discuss the origins of these central regions

Intraspecific diversity of the rhizodeposition of Lupinus angustifolius L. regarding the phosphorus mobilization in the soil
The cropping of lupines (Lupinus spp.) for protein production is rising worldwide. The growth of lupines is often limited by P deficiency, caused by low P bioavailability in soils. The rhizodeposition is a leading control of the P mobilization in the soil, i.e. especially by the release of phosphatases and organic acids. In the present study 20 genotypes of L. angustifolius (19 accessions from different geographic origins and the cultivar Boruta) were tested on their molecular-chemical composition of the rhizodeposition in P-deficiency by pyrolysis-field ionisation mass spectrometry (Py-FIMS) and on the phosphatase and ß-glucosidase activities in the rhizosphere soil.
The intraspecific diversity of the composition of the rhizodeposits was especially large for the relative abundance of carbohydrates and in this way in a specific impact on the microbial activity in the rhizosphere by selective promotion under some genotypes by easily available C sources for the microbial rhizosphere community. This was confirmed by a large variation in the thermal stability of the rhizodeposits of different genotypes, a varying pH level in identical cultivation conditions and in varying activities of alkaline and acid phosphomonoesterases and ß-glucosidase in the rhizosphere. Furthermore, the data revealed a strong variation in the release of alkaloids into the rhizosphere during the growth with a further impact on the microbial activity. In conclusion, the use of the quality of the rhizodeposition as an indicator of the potential for P mobilization in P-deficient soils highlighted a broad intraspecific diversity within L. angustifolius. This is a promising basis for a selection of highly P efficient genotypes within this species for further breeding strategies of productive cultivars
