Double Λ\Lambda and the Λ−Λ\Lambda-\Lambda Interaction

The Λ\Lambda-Λ\Lambda effective interaction, in the channel L=S=0L=S=0, in the nuclear medium is fitted to the available binding energies, BΛΛB_{\Lambda\Lambda}, of double Λ\Lambda hypernuclei: ΛΛ6^{6}_{\Lambda\Lambda}He, ΛΛ10^{10}_{\Lambda\Lambda}Be and ΛΛ13^{13}_{\Lambda\Lambda}B. The mesonic decay of these hypernuclei is also investigated. Finally, this effective interaction is used to predict the binding energies and mesonic decays widths of heavier double Λ\Lambda hypernuclei.Comment: 4 pages, (latex file, postscript-file and 3 Postscript-figures included

    The Symmetries of Nature

    Get PDF
The study of the symmetries of nature has fascinated scientists for eons. The application of the formal mathematical description of symmetries during the last century has produced many breakthroughs in our understanding of the substructure of matter. In this talk, a number of these advances are discussed, and the important role that George Sudarshan played in their development is emphasize

The influence of strength of hyperon-hyperon interactions on neutron star properties

An equation of state of neutron star matter with strange baryons has been obtained. The effects of the strength of hyperon-hyperon interactions on the equations of state constructed for the chosen parameter sets have been analyzed. Numerous neutron star models show that the appearance of hyperons is connected with the increasing density in neutron star interiors. The performed calculations have indicated that the change of the hyperon-hyperon coupling constants affects the chemical composition of a neutron star. The obtained numerical hyperon star models exclude large population of strange baryons in the star interior.Comment: 18 pages, 22 figures, accepted to be published in Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physic

Quantum marking and quantum erasure for neutral kaons

Entangled K0 anti-K0 pairs are shown to be suitable to discuss extensions and tests of Bohr's complementarity principle through the quantum marking and quantum erasure techniques suggested by M. O. Scully and K. Druehl [Phys. Rev. A 25, 2208 (1982)]. Strangeness oscillations play the role of the traditional interference pattern linked to wave-like behaviour, whereas the distinct propagation in free space of the K_S and K_L components mimics the two possible interferometric paths taken by particle-like objects.Comment: 4 RevTeX page

Experimental analysis of lateral impact on planar brittle material

The fragmentation of alumina and glass plates due to lateral impact is studied. A few hundred plates have been fragmented at different impact velocities and the produced fragments are analyzed. The method employed in this work allows one to investigate some geometrical properties of the fragments, besides the traditional size distribution usually studied in former experiments. We found that, although both materials exhibit qualitative similar fragment size distribution function, their geometrical properties appear to be quite different. A schematic model for two-dimensional fragmentation is also presented and its predictions are compared to our experimental results. The comparison suggests that the analysis of the fragments' geometrical properties constitutes a more stringent test of the theoretical models' assumptions than the size distribution

The measurement of the pp->K+ n Sigma+ reaction near threshold

    Get PDF
It is shown that a recent extraction of the total cross section for pp->K+ n Sigma+ from inclusive K+ production data is in conflict with experimental data on the exclusive pp->K+ p Lambda reaction. The result may be interpreted as an upper bound which is not inconsistent with the much lower values that already exist in the literature.Comment: Submitted to PL

    Effects of S-wave thresholds

    Get PDF
The opening of a new S-wave threshold is frequently accompanied by an abrupt dip in the magnitude of an amplitude for an already-open channel. One familiar example is the behavior of the I=0 S-wave ππ\pi \pi scattering amplitude at KKˉK \bar K threshold. Numerous other examples of this phenomenon in recent data are noted, and a unified description of the underlying dynamics is sought.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figures. Lineshape of the Lambda(1405) Hyperon Measured Through its Sigma0 pion0 Decay

    Get PDF
The pp -> p K+ Y0 reaction has been studied for hyperon masses m(Y0)<1540 MeV/c2 at COSY-Juelich by using a 3.65 GeV/c circulating proton beam incident on an internal hydrogen target. Final states comprising two protons, one positively charged kaon and one negatively charged pion have been identified with the ANKE spectrometer. Such configurations are sensitive to the production of the ground state Lambda and Sigma0 hyperons as well as the Sigma0(1385) and Lambda(1405) resonances. Applying invariant- and missing-mass techniques, the two overlapping excited states could be well separated, though with limited statistics. The shape and position of the Lambda(1405) distribution, reconstructed cleanly in the Sigma0 pion0 channel, are similar to those found from other decay modes and there is no obvious mass shift. This finding constitutes a challenging test for models that predict Lambda(1405) to be a two-state resonance.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Lett.

Study of correlation of production and decay planes in π→3π\pi\to3\pi diffractive dissociation process on nuclei

    Get PDF
A large correlation of production and decay planes of (\pi^-\pi^+\pi^-)-system in dissociation of π−\pi^--beam 40 GeV/c on nuclear targets was observed. The dependence of the correlation on atomic number, Feynmann variable and transversal momentum as well as on invariant mass of the pion triple and neutral pion pair were investigated. It was shown that the phenomenon has a clear dynamic origin and resembles the single spin asymmetry behavior.Comment: 8 pages, latex epsfig.sty, 5 eps figures. Submitted to Yad. Fiz
