    Role of reflections in the generation of a time delay in strong-field ionization

    The problem of time delay in tunneling ionization is revisited. The origin of time delay at the tunnel exit is analysed, underlining the two faces of the concept of the tunnelling time delay: the time delay around the tunnel exit and the asymptotic time delay at a detector. We show that the former time delay, in the sense of a delay in the peak of the wavefunction, exists as a matter of principle and arises due to the sub-barrier interference of the reflected and transmitted components of the tunneling electronic wavepacket. We exemplify this by describing the tunnelling ionization of an electron bound by a short-range potential within the strong field approximation in a "deep tunnelling" regime. If sub-barrier reflections are extracted from this wavefunction, then the time delay of the peak is shown to vanish. Thus, we assert that the disturbance of the tunnelling wavepacket by the reflection from the surface of the barrier causes a time delay in the neighbourhood of the tunnel exit

    Reconciling Conflicting Approaches for the Tunneling Time Delay in Strong Field Ionization

    Several recent attoclock experiments have investigated the fundamentalquestion of a quantum mechanically induced time delay in tunneling ionizationvia extremely precise photoelectron momentum spectroscopy. The interpretationsof those attoclock experimental results were controversially discussed, becausethe entanglement of the laser and Coulomb field did not allow for theoreticaltreatments without undisputed approximations. The method of semiclassicalpropagation matched with the tunneled wavefunction, the quasistatic Wignertheory, the analytical R-matrix theory, the backpropagation method, and theunder-the-barrier recollision theory are the leading conceptual approaches putforward to treat this problem, however, with seemingly conflicting conclusionson the existence of a tunneling time delay. To resolve the contradictingconclusions of the different approaches, we consider a very simple tunnelingscenario which is not plagued with complications stemming from the Coulombpotential of the atomic core, avoids consequent controversial approximationsand, therefore, allows us to unequivocally identify the origin of the tunnelingtime delay.<br

    Detecting early mealybug infestation stages on tomato plants using optical spectroscopy

    Mealybugs (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) are important pests in agricultural and ornamental crops, including the tomato. Damage by mealybugs is characterized by a reduction in plant photosynthesis and growth due to sap feeding and also, as a result of honeydew excretion, from sooty mould development and virus transmission. The effectiveness of mealybug control strategies, including the application of insecticides and biological control, depends on the ability to detect the infestation at an early stage. Monitoring by visual observation is not very effective and is time-consuming. Optical spectroscopy represents a potential tool for detecting plant biotic stresses, including that caused by insect pests. In this study, we tested the feasibility of using optical spectroscopy for the early detection of mealybug infestation of tomato plants. An experiment was carried out using potted plants under field conditions, with 15 replicates per treatment and a randomised design. Two treatments were considered: 1) infested plants inoculated with three mealybug egg masses; and 2) control plants without mealybugs. The distance between pots was kept at 80 cm and the plants were frequently inspected to ensure control plants were not infested with mealybugs. The following parameters were recorded weekly over 5 weeks for each plant: 1) reflectance of marked leaves was measured with a USB4000 spectrometer across the wavelength 400-1,000 nm; 2) plant height; 3) leaf size; 4) mealybug density; and 5) presence and density of other pests. Results of principal component analysis (PCA) second derivative of the leaf reflectance showed a clear distinction between control and infested plants and a separation of components in the near infrared (NIR) region on the last day of the analysis (57 days). The reduction in absorption in the NIR region may be due to an increase in the quantity of air spaces within the leaf's mesophyll, changing the spatial distribution of the leaves' refractive index and, as a consequence, the light scattering contribution to the reflectance spectra. When tracking the evolution of the leaves' absorbance, infested leaves relative to control leaves had a tendency over time to have reduced absorbance in photosystem II and NIR plateau wavelengths. The evolution over time of the reflectance of analysed leaves at each wavelength fitted a quadratic curve, the coefficients of which discriminated between infested and control plants.     Diversity of bacterial biosynthetic genes in maritime antarctica

    Bacterial natural products (NPs) are still a major source of new drug leads. Polyketides (PKs) and non-ribosomal peptides (NRP) are two pharmaceutically important families of NPs and recent studies have revealed Antarctica to harbor endemic polyketide synthase (PKS) and non-ribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) genes, likely to be involved in the production of novel metabolites. Despite this, the diversity of secondary metabolites genes in Antarctica is still poorly explored. In this study, a computational bioprospection approach was employed to study the diversity and identity of PKS and NRPS genes to one of the most biodiverse areas in maritime Antarctica—Maxwell Bay. Amplicon sequencing of soil samples targeting ketosynthase (KS) and adenylation (AD) domains of PKS and NRPS genes, respectively, revealed abundant and unexplored chemical diversity in this peninsula. About 20% of AD domain sequences were only distantly related to characterized biosynthetic genes. Several PKS and NRPS genes were found to be closely associated to recently described metabolites including those from uncultured and candidate phyla.     Sleep during the third trimester of pregnancy: the role of depression and anxiety

    Depression has been associated with sleep disturbances in pregnancy; however, no previous research has controlled the possible confounding effect of anxiety on this association. This study aims to analyze the effect of depression on sleep during the third trimester of pregnancy controlling for anxiety. The sample was composed by 143 depressed (n = 77) and non-depressed (n = 66) pregnant women who completed measures of depression, anxiety, and sleep. Differences between groups in sleep controlling for anxiety were found. Depressed pregnant women present higher number of nocturnal awakenings and spent more hours trying falling asleep during the night and the entire 24 h period.     Fathers’ parenting self-efficacy during the transition to parenthood

    "Published online: 09 Jun 2016"Background: Little is known about the development of fathers’ parenting self-efficacy during the transition to parenthood. Objectives: To analyse (1) fathers’ parenting self-efficacy developmental path and (2) the effects of anxious and depressive symptoms and coparenting support on fathers’ parenting self-efficacy developmental path, from the first trimester of pregnancy to 6 months postpartum. Methods: Eighty-six fathers recruited at the first trimester of pregnancy completed self-report measures of anxious and depressive symptoms, coparenting support and parenting self-efficacy at the first and third trimesters of pregnancy, and at 1 and 6 months postpartum. Growth curve models were performed. Results: An increase in fathers’ parenting self-efficacy was found from the first trimester of pregnancy to 6 months postpartum. The main effects of anxious symptoms and interaction effects of anxious symptoms and time were found on fathers’ parenting self-efficacy. Fathers with higher anxious symptoms revealed lower levels of parenting self-efficacy at the first trimester of pregnancy and a lower increase of parenting self-efficacy from this time to 6 months postpartum. The main effects of coparenting support were found in fathers’ parenting self-efficacy. At the first trimester of pregnancy, fathers who perceived more coparenting support revealed higher levels of parenting self-efficacy. Conclusion: The present study may contribute to the literature by describing fathers’ parenting self-efficacy developmental path and the effects of anxious symptoms and coparenting support on fathers’ parenting self-efficacy developmental path during the transition to parenthood.PTDC/SAU/SAP/116738/201

    Changes in the gene expression profiles of the brains of male European eels (Anguilla anguilla) during sexual maturation

    Background: The vertebrate brain plays a critical role in the regulation of sexual maturation and reproduction by integrating environmental information with developmental and endocrine status. The European eel Anguilla anguilla is an important species in which to better understand the neuroendocrine factors that control reproduction because it is an endangered species, has a complex life cycle that includes two extreme long distance migrations with both freshwater and seawater stages and because it occupies a key position within the teleost phylogeny. At present, mature eels have never been caught in the wild and little is known about most aspects of reproduction in A. anguilla. The goal of this study was to identify genes that may be involved in sexual maturation in experimentally matured eels. For this, we used microarrays to compare the gene expression profiles of sexually mature to immature males. Results: Using a false discovery rate of 0.05, a total of 1,497 differentially expressed genes were identified. Of this set, 991 were expressed at higher levels in brains (forebrain and midbrain) of mature males while 506 were expressed at lower levels relative to brains of immature males. The set of up-regulated genes includes genes involved in neuroendocrine processes, cell-cell signaling, neurogenesis and development. Interestingly, while genes involved in immune system function were down-regulated in the brains of mature males, changes in the expression levels of several receptors and channels were observed suggesting that some rewiring is occurring in the brain at sexual maturity. Conclusions: This study shows that the brains of eels undergo major changes at the molecular level at sexual maturity that may include re-organization at the cellular level. Here, we have defined a set of genes that help to understand the molecular mechanisms controlling reproduction in eels. Some of these genes have previously described functions while many others have roles that have yet to be characterized in a reproductive context. Since most of the genes examined here have orthologs in other vertebrates, the results of this study will contribute to the body of knowledge concerning reproduction in vertebrates as well as to an improved understanding of eel biology.Peer Reviewe

    Mutation of the surface layer protein SlpB has pleiotropic effects in the probiotic propionibacterium freudenreichii CIRM-BIA 129

    Propionibacterium freudenreichii is a beneficial Gram-positive bacterium, traditionally used as a cheese-ripening starter, and currently considered as an emerging probiotic. As an example, the P. freudenreichii CIRM-BIA 129 strain recently revealed promising immunomodulatory properties. Its consumption accordingly exerts healing effects in different animal models of colitis, suggesting a potent role in the context of inflammatory bowel diseases. This anti-inflammatory effect depends on surface layer proteins (SLPs). SLPs may be involved in key functions in probiotics, such as persistence within the gut, adhesion to host cells and mucus, or immunomodulation. Several SLPs coexist in P. freudenreichii CIRM-BIA 129 and mediate immunomodulation and adhesion. A mutant P. freudenreichii CIRM-BIA 129ΔslpB (CB129ΔslpB) strain was shown to exhibit decreased adhesion to intestinal epithelial cells. In the present study, we thoroughly analyzed the impact of this mutation on cellular properties. Firstly, we investigated alterations of surface properties in CB129ΔslpB. Surface extractable proteins, surface charges (ζ-potential) and surface hydrophobicity were affected by the mutation. Whole-cell proteomics, using high definition mass spectrometry, identified 1,288 quantifiable proteins in the wild-type strain, i.e., 53% of the theoretical proteome predicted according to P. freudenreichii CIRM-BIA 129 genome sequence. In the mutant strain, we detected 1,252 proteins, including 1,227 proteins in common with the wild-type strain. Comparative quantitative analysis revealed 97 proteins with significant differences between wild-type and mutant strains. These proteins are involved in various cellular process like signaling, metabolism, and DNA repair and replication. Finally, in silico analysis predicted that slpB gene is not part of an operon, thus not affecting the downstream genes after gene knockout. This study, in accordance with the various roles attributed in the literature to SLPs, revealed a pleiotropic effect of a single slpB mutation, in the probiotic P. freudenreichii. This suggests that SlpB may be at a central node of cellular processes and confirms that both nature and amount of SLPs, which are highly variable within the P. freudenreichii species, determine the probiotic abilities of strains.Fil: do Carmo, Fillipe L.
