[CII] line emission in BRI1335-0417 at z=4.4
Using the 12m APEX telescope, we have detected redshifted emission from the
157.74micron [CII] line in the z=4.4074 quasar BRI1335-0417. The linewidth and
redshift are in good agreement with previous observations of high-J CO line
emission. We measure a [CII] line luminosity, L_[CII] = (16.4 +/- 2.6)x10^9
Lsun, making BRI~1335-0417 the most luminous, unlensed [CII] line emitter known
at high-redshift. The [CII]-to-FIR luminosity ratio of (5.3+/-0.8)x10^-4 is ~3x
higher than expected for an average object with a FIR luminosity L_FIR =
3.1x10^13 Lsun, if this ratio were to follow the trend observed in other
FIR-bright galaxies that have been detected in [CII] line emission. These new
data suggest that the scatter in the [CII]-to-FIR luminosity ratio could be
larger than previously expected for high luminosity objects. BR1335-0417 has a
similar FIR luminosity and [CII]/CO luminosity compared to local ULIRGS and
appears to be a gas-rich merger forming stars at a rate of a few thousand solar
masses per year.Comment: A&A accepte
CO-Dark Star Formation and Black Hole Activity in 3C 368 at z = 1.131: Coeval Growth of Stellar and Supermassive Black Hole Masses
We present the detection of four far-infrared fine-structure oxygen lines, as
well as strong upper limits for the CO(2-1) and [N II] 205 um lines, in 3C 368,
a well-studied radio-loud galaxy at z = 1.131. These new oxygen lines, taken in
conjunction with previously observed neon and carbon fine-structure lines,
suggest a powerful active galactic nucleus (AGN), accompanied by vigorous and
extended star formation. A starburst dominated by O8 stars, with an age of ~6.5
Myr, provides a good fit to the fine-structure line data. This estimated age of
the starburst makes it nearly concurrent with the latest episode of AGN
activity, suggesting a link between the growth of the supermassive black hole
and stellar population in this source. We do not detect the CO(2-1) line, down
to a level twelve times lower than the expected value for star forming
galaxies. This lack of CO line emission is consistent with recent star
formation activity if the star-forming molecular gas has low metallicity, is
highly fractionated (such that CO is photodissociated through much of the
clouds), or is chemically very young (such that CO has not yet had time to
form). It is also possible, though we argue unlikely, that the ensemble of fine
structure lines are emitted from the region heated by the AGN.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in the

An Economic Analysis of Texas Shrimp Season Closures
Management of the Texas penaeid shrimp fishery is aimed at increasing revenue from brown shrimp, Penaeus aztecus, landings and decreasing the level of discards. Since 1960 Texas has closed its territorial sea for 45-60 days during peak migration of brown shrimp to the Gulf of Mexico. In 1981 the closure was extended to 200 miles to include the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone. Simulation modeling is used in this paper to estimate the changes in landings, revenue, costs, and economic rent attributable to the Texas closure. Four additional analyses were conducted to estimate the effects of closing the Gulf 1- to 4-fathom zone for 45 and 60 days, with and without effort redirected to inshore waters. Distributional impacts are analyzed in terms of costs, revenues, and rents, by vessel class, shrimp species, vessel owner, and crew
Expanded Very Large Arrays Observations of a Proto-Cluster of Molecular Gas-Rich Galaxies at z = 4.05
We present observations of the molecular gas in the GN20 proto-cluster of galaxies at z = 4.05 using the Expanded Very Large Array (EVLA). This group of galaxies is the ideal laboratory for studying the formation of massive galaxies via luminous, gas-rich starbursts within 1.6 Gyr of the big bang. We detect three galaxies in the proto-cluster in CO 2-1 emission, with gas masses (H_2) between 10^(10) and 10^(11) × (α/0.8) M_⊙. The emission from the brightest source, GN20, is resolved with a size ~2'' and has a clear north-south velocity gradient, possibly indicating ordered rotation. The gas mass in GN20 is comparable to the stellar mass (1.3 × 10^(11) × (α/0.8) M_⊙ and 2.3 × 10^(11) M_⊙, respectively), and the sum of gas plus stellar mass is comparable to the dynamical mass of the system (~3.4 × 10^(11)[sin (i)/sin (45°)]^(–2) M_⊙), within a 5 kpc radius. There is also evidence for a tidal tail extending another 2'' north of the galaxy with a narrow velocity dispersion. GN20 may be a massive, gas-rich disk that is gravitationally disturbed, but not completely disrupted. There is one Lyman-break galaxy (BD29079) in the GN20 proto-cluster with an optical spectroscopic redshift within our search volume, and we set a 3σ limit to the molecular gas mass of this galaxy of 1.1 × 10^(10) × (α/0.8) M_⊙
A Kiloparsec-Scale Hyper-Starburst in a Quasar Host Less than 1 Gigayear after the Big Bang
The host galaxy of the quasar SDSS J114816.64+525150.3 (at redshift z=6.42,
when the Universe was <1 billion years old) has an infrared luminosity of
2.2x10^13 L_sun, presumably significantly powered by a massive burst of star
formation. In local examples of extremely luminous galaxies such as Arp220, the
burst of star formation is concentrated in the relatively small central region
of <100pc radius. It is unknown on which scales stars are forming in active
galaxies in the early Universe, which are likely undergoing their initial burst
of star formation. We do know that at some early point structures comparable to
the spheroidal bulge of the Milky Way must have formed. Here we report a
spatially resolved image of [CII] emission of the host galaxy of
J114816.64+525150.3 that demonstrates that its star forming gas is distributed
over a radius of ~750pc around the centre. The surface density of the star
formation rate averaged over this region is ~1000 M_sun/yr/kpc^2. This surface
density is comparable to the peak in Arp220, though ~2 orders of magnitudes
larger in area. This vigorous star forming event will likely give rise to a
massive spheroidal component in this system.Comment: Nature, in press, Feb 5 issue, p. 699-70
Dynamical Structure of the Molecular Interstellar Medium in an Extremely Bright, Multiply Lensed z ≃ 3 Submillimeter Galaxy Discovered with Herschel
We report the detection of CO(J = 5 → 4), CO(J = 3 → 2), and CO(J = 1 → 0) emission in the strongly lensed, Herschel/SPIRE-selected submillimeter galaxy (SMG) HERMES J105751.1+573027 at z = 2.9574 ± 0.0001, using the Plateau de Bure Interferometer, the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy, and the Green Bank Telescope. The observations spatially resolve the molecular gas into four lensed images with a maximum separation of ~9" and reveal the internal gas dynamics in this system. We derive lensing-corrected CO line luminosities of L'_(CO(1-0)) = (4.17 ± 0.41), L'_(CO(3-2)) = (3.96 ± 0.20), and L'_(CO(5-4)) = (3.45 ± 0.20) × 10^(10) (μL/10.9)^(–1) K km s^(–1) pc^2, corresponding to luminosity ratios of r_(31) = 0.95 ± 0.10, r_(53) = 0.87 ± 0.06, and r_(51) = 0.83 ± 0.09. This suggests a total molecular gas mass of M_(gas) = 3.3×10^(10) (α_(CO)/0.8) (μ_L/10.9)^(–1) M_☉. The gas mass, gas mass fraction, gas depletion timescale, star formation efficiency, and specific star formation rate are typical for an SMG. The velocity structure of the gas reservoir suggests that the brightest two lensed images are dynamically resolved projections of the same dust-obscured region in the galaxy that are kinematically offset from the unresolved fainter images. The resolved kinematics appear consistent with the complex velocity structure observed in major, "wet" (i.e., gas-rich) mergers. Major mergers are commonly observed in SMGs and are likely to be responsible for fueling their intense starbursts at high gas consumption rates. This study demonstrates the level of detail to which galaxies in the early universe can be studied by utilizing the increase in effective spatial resolution and sensitivity provided by gravitational lensing
